Bowdon families either by gift or inheritance. <strong>The</strong><br />

earliest k<strong>no</strong>wn mention <strong>of</strong> what is probably the<br />

Chichester-Constable chasuble is in the will (1559)<br />

<strong>of</strong> Lady Margaret Scrope, wife <strong>of</strong> Sir John Constable,<br />

in which she bequeaths "ye antient vestment" to<br />

"ye fair chappelle," which was among the additions<br />

made by her husband about that time to his "goodly<br />

ma<strong>no</strong>r house <strong>of</strong> antient building." Her ancestor<br />

Lord Henry Scrope and other members <strong>of</strong> that family<br />

served both Edward II and III in important capacities,<br />

and the chasuble might well have been<br />

a royal gift.<br />

In a 1945 letter, Colonel W. Butler-Bowdon, who<br />

at that time still owned the cope, mentioned a<strong>no</strong>ther<br />

medieval vestment in his possession that had<br />

coats <strong>of</strong> arms referring to the 1398 marriage <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Earl <strong>of</strong> Stafford to Anne Plantagenet, a granddaughter<br />

<strong>of</strong> Edward il1. Since that vestment had come to his<br />

family by direct inheritance, it is possible that the<br />

Victoria and Albert cope did too.<br />

While we may never be able to establish beyond<br />

any doubt for whom the cope and chasuble were<br />

made, we can state with reasonable certainty that<br />

they were produced in London, the center <strong>of</strong> opus<br />

anglicanum manufacture from the middle <strong>of</strong> the<br />

thirteenth century on. <strong>The</strong> age, richness, and sophistication<br />

<strong>of</strong> workmanship make the chasuble the unquestioned<br />

star <strong>of</strong> the Cloisters exhibition.<br />
