Abstract Prior to the mid-eighties, diaptomid copepods were only “accidental visitors” in Lake Kinneret. Early surveys reported sporadic appearances of diaptomids in the littoral, especially after winter floods, but not from other regions. Samples collected after 1986 showed the presence of the diaptomid Eudiaptomus drieschi (Poppe & Marzek 1895) throughout the pelagic regions of the lake. This is the first record of E. drieschi outside of its previous range, as well as the first report of a diaptomid species invading Lake Kinneret. It had been previously recorded from Sri Lanka, Yugoslavia, Greece, and Turkey. Records of the population were begun in 1994. Population densities and life history parameters of this organism have been monitored from a fixed sampling site, (Station F, 20 m depth) in the northwest region of the lake (this study) from 1996. E. drieschi does not appear to produce identifiable cohorts, but reproduces continuously throughout the time it is present in the water column. In order to obtain production and biomass estimates, growth and development were measured in the lab. Individuals were reared at different temperatures and salinity. Duration of stage development and growth increments were measured. Results indicate that temperatures > 24 0 C are lethal to Eudiaptomus, and in chloride concentrations > 250 ppm, this organism does not develop naturally. A number of noticeable biological and chemical changes have occurred in Lake Kinneret since 1969. The diversity of the pelagic zooplankton has increased, with formerly rare individuals; Chydorus sphaericus (By Birge), Moina rectirostris (Leydig) appearing more frequently. Also, Conchiloides sp., a colonial rotifer and, Anuraeopsis fissa (Gosse), a brachionid, are found seasonally in plankton samples.
