E. drieschi produces two distinct types of eggs: subitaneous (immediately hatching ), and diapausing (benthic resting) egg (Figs. 14a, b). The presence of an “extravitelline space” in the subitaneous eggs of preserved E. drieschi can be detected, in most cases, without the use of the Lugol’s solution stain (Lohner et al. 1990). The type of eggs carried by live females can be distinguished when viewed against a light background (Fig 14b). There are no outstanding morphological features of the eggs when viewed with a scanning electron microscope (Figs 14c, 15 a-b).
