It’s our favorite because it is our opportunity to acknowledge and thank all of you for your support and your dedication to the cause of homeless pets. You make second chances possible and give a voice to the pain and suffering that so many homeless pets endure. I want to personally thank each and every one of you for all of the progress that your contribution, whether financial or of time, allowed us to make in 2013. Because of you we were able to: • Find homes for 5,872 homeless pets, spay or neuter nearly 18,000 dogs and cats • Provide 39,043 free or low-cost vaccinations, microchips and blood tests • Move forward with plans to open our second adoption location, the PAWS Chicago North Shore Adoption Center in Highland Park • Begin construction on our much-needed Training & Foster Care Center, which will provide space to further the enrichment and expand opportunities for our volunteers, the community and most importantly, our Gold Star Dogs (which you can read more about in this issue on page 32) Because of you, our strategic plan has continued to evolve in order to realize the growth necessary to achieve our No Kill mission here in our community and beyond. An exciting new initiative that you can look forward to in 2014 includes the launch of No Kill Academy, a resource arm of PAWS Chicago designed to share our No Kill Model and best practices with shelters across the country. The reason for this national platform is exhilarating and one you should all – as PAWS Photo by: Sofia Spentzas Chicago supporters – take pride in; our work is changing the conversation and the way people think about homeless animals and traditional sheltering. One of our champions in this transformation is featured on our cover, a man who needs no introduction. Billy Corgan has been a tremendous advocate for homeless animals and is an inspiration to me personally in his care for all Earth’s creatures. He has become an extension of our PAWS Chicago family and we cannot thank him enough for his support. You can read more about his work and love for animals in our cover story on page 42. I want to point you to an important section of the magazine, the 2013 Annual Report which starts on page 48, where you can learn more about how to identify quality No Kill shelters throughout the United States. Please also take a look at our in-depth feature, Gold Star Dogs, which starts on page 32. It introduces you to some very special dogs who suffer from emotional damage and explains the very important component of animal behavior in the No Kill Model. And don’t miss reading the great news about Chicago and Cook County passing ordinances banning the sale of puppy mills on page 10. Enjoy this issue and thank you for your unwavering commitment to homeless pets, Paula Fasseas Founder and Chair
