Chance and his family were always <strong>in</strong>volved<br />
with horses. His love for horses started at<br />
a very young age while be<strong>in</strong>g raised <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
ranch<strong>in</strong>g and rodeo lifestyle. In <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
most of Chance’s <strong>in</strong>volvement with horses<br />
consisted of participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> rodeo events<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g team rop<strong>in</strong>g and saddle bronc rid<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Dur<strong>in</strong>g his high school years he rode a few colts<br />
for a tra<strong>in</strong>er or friend who had young horses that<br />
needed ridden. While fur<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g his education at<br />
Central <strong>Arizona</strong> College he shoed horses under<br />
Charlie Hill. To this day he still shoes for Charlie<br />
as well as himself <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> East Valley area.<br />
It was dur<strong>in</strong>g this time, while work<strong>in</strong>g alongside<br />
Charlie that Chance really became aware of how to<br />
understand different horses and <strong>the</strong>ir needs. As well<br />
as ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g a vast amount of <strong>in</strong>sight <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> shoe<strong>in</strong>g<br />
aspect of <strong>the</strong> horse, he was very fortunate to have<br />
opportunities to start young colts with Charlie<br />
Hill’s guidance. “He gave me help and <strong>in</strong>sight when<br />
I needed it but he allowed me to struggle through<br />
certa<strong>in</strong> areas to f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> best way to fill <strong>in</strong> for <strong>the</strong>se<br />
young horses. Start<strong>in</strong>g colts is not just learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
how to start a green horse, but teaches me as a<br />
horseman, how to fill <strong>in</strong> for <strong>the</strong> naïve horse and how<br />
I can use this <strong>in</strong> all of my horsemanship activities.”<br />
Chance does not consider himself a horse tra<strong>in</strong>er<br />
and has no <strong>in</strong>tentions at this time to make a<br />
liv<strong>in</strong>g start<strong>in</strong>g colts, his career as a farrier and<br />
cont<strong>in</strong>uous efforts <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> rodeo arena are <strong>the</strong><br />
most important. “However, I consider myself a<br />
young man who has knowledge of how to br<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong>se young horses along <strong>in</strong> a favorable fashion.<br />
My hope is that <strong>the</strong>re is at least one person that<br />
can use what I have learned and apply it <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
own horsemanship practices.”<br />
