Our umbilicals, power cables, risers,
and flowlines provide connectivity that is
critical for keeping each field flowing.
This is the ‘circulatory system’ of an
offshore development - a single system
enabling hydrocarbons to travel up from
the wellhead while allowing the supply of

Engineering and technology
Aker Solutions’ leading experience and technology combined with understanding

Over the past 15 years Aker Solutions
has delivered more than 400 umbilicals
to some of the world’s most challenging
fields, from harsh environment to
ultra-deep, high-pressure reservoir
conditions.
Our umbilicals are always designed
with this in mind; the long lay length of
the components and the components
supported in channel elements give the
lowest possible load exposed to tubes,
cables, power cores and fibre optical
elements.
Aker Solutions utilise various
technologies to provide the best
solution for each project:
Carbon fibre rods in the cross section
control the strain of the components
and improve fatigue properties
Suspension of the power cores
below the fatigue exposed section
of dynamic umbilicals eliminates the
combined bend and tension and
significantly reduces contact force
Steel tape armour provides ballast
with high fill factor and increased
mechanical protection
Profile matrix designed to meet
specific requirements for crush and
impact capacity
Polymer properties satisfy
temperature and design life criteria
Our umbilical design with components
individually supported in channel
elements creates a wide range of
possibilities for arranging the crosssection.
The channel elements easily
facilitate incorporation of functions like
fibre-optical monitoring and strength,
and weight components like wires and
composite fibre rods.
The design of the termination and
ancillary equipment is a significant
part of the project. Terminations must
interface with equipment supplied by
external parties like subsea connection
systems and platform infrastructure.
They are designed to minimise the
dimensions and weight, while ensuring
sufficient space and access for the
termination work.
The installation is often the most critical
phase of an umbilical’s life cycle and
the complex issues related to the
installation need proper preparation.
The load imposed on the umbilical
during handling and installation and the
load limitations of the umbilical system
must be thoroughly communicated in
interface documents. The design of the
umbilical, terminations and ancillary
equipment must therefore reflect the
installation equipment and procedure.

Our umbilicals concept
Aker Solutions is the global market leader for steel tube umbilicals. Our steel tube
umbilical is characterised by long lay (pitch) length of the components and all
components supported within channel elements.
Features and advantages
Longitudinal channel elements,
or profiles, provide multi-purpose
functionality; give protection, correctly
space the internal elements in the
umbilical cross-section and maximise
flexibility for the individual components
to move axially. They provide individual
support for each of the internal elements,
hold high installation tensioner loads,
and protect against dropped objects
and sharp edges. The design offers
high cross section lay-out flexibility and
improved fatigue capacity. The channel
elements protect all components from
any external damage in the factory;
ensuring components are effectively
protected through all umbilical
manufacturing processes and spooling.
A majority of failures to umbilicals
occur during installation. Aker Solutions
offers increased robustness - reducing
risk of damage during installation and
operation.
Our steel tube umbilical:
Accepts very high installation crush
load from tensioner
Absorbs the impact energy from
dropped object efficiently through
elastic deformation
Accepts compressive loads,
e.g. at touch down
Offers increased protection of the
umbilical components from e.g.
sharp edges
Has no armour, thus can be bent in
any direction and “bird caging” is
eliminated
Should a failure occur, the long lay
length and the spacing of the individual
umbilical components facilitate
predictable opening of the umbilical
package and repair or replacement of
damaged components.

the tubes in the cross section
Low internal contact forces translate
to improved fatigue capacity
Internal elements move relative to
each other at places where bending
occurs, resulting in low frictional
effects
High torsion stability
The umbilical is tuned to meet
any water depth or environmental
condition by adding weight or
stiffness elements in the cross
section
Preferable and predictable conditions
inside the umbilical cross-section
mean umbilicals with superduplex
tubes operate reliably in warm
seawater and up to 65° Celsius
without tube sheathing
Enhanced deepwater dynamic
umbilical
Aker Solutions’ patented carbon fibre
rod technology increases umbilical axial
stiffness for deepwater applications.
This technology is used on both steel
tube production control umbilicals as
well as power umbilicals. By using this
technology Aker Solutions allows for
increased strength with little impact
on the overall weight. This reduces
structural reinforcement on the host
platform, reduces logistical costs, and
increases installability. Carbon fibre
reinforcement is also used to improve
fatigue capacity.

zero accidents to personnel, material and
non-material assets. Unsafe operations
jeopardise the safety of our employees
and the environment and undermine
our efficiency. Over the past years our
umbilical business has placed HSE at the
top of the agenda to continuously improve
our standards. It is one of our core values,
not simply a ‘priority’.
To ensure our HSE message reaches
employees at every corner of the globe
we have a set of tailor-made and well
proven HSE processes and tools. These
include Just Care; the very essence
of what HSE means to all of us; Just
Rules, describing the absolutes required
to ensure an incident-free workplace
and operations; local HSE networks,
annual self-assessments and a new
HSE leadership programme to ensure
engagement of line management and
that the highest standards are always
