Journeying Out to Underserved Regions <strong>of</strong> the Nation to<br />
Engage in Effective Service<br />
Mission Statement: JOURNEES seeks to expose medical students to the healthcare needs <strong>of</strong><br />
diverse patient populations beyond that <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Chicago</strong> Medical Center. Through<br />
direct service-learning experiences, the group works to gain awareness <strong>of</strong> the social<br />
determinants <strong>of</strong> diminished health conditions in underserved areas and to assist community<br />
organizations, working to alleviate poor health outcomes throughout the country.<br />
Winter 2011-2012 Plans: We plan to return to Tutwiler, Mississippi, where we led our inaugural<br />
JOURNEES trip last winter to learn about rural medicine. We will also lead a trip to Pine Ridge<br />
Reservation in South Dakota to serve and learn within the Native American healthcare system.
