Maria Shelter Clinic
A free clinic run by medical students at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine
ABOUT THE CLINIC
The Maria Shelter is a residential shelter for
homeless women and their children located in
Englewood on the South Side of Chicago.
The Maria Shelter Clinic is a free weekly clinic
that operates in concert with the aims of the
Shelter. The clinic provides a valuable resource to
an underserved community whose regular care
might otherwise be interrupted by homelessness,
unemployment, or lack of insurance.
The Clinic is managed by a team of first year
medical students and relies on the services of
volunteer University physicians.
INTERESTED IN
VOLUNTEERING?
There are many ways to get involved in Maria
Shelter! Here are a few options:
• Volunteer one Wednesday evening.
• Apply to work on the Maria Shelter Board.
• Participate in community or education events,
held weekly at the Shelter.
• Help out with the Health Fair, held annually
in the summer.
QUICK FACTS
Clinic meets Wednesday night from 5pm to
9pm. Physicians arrive at 7pm.
Medical student volunteers take patient histories,
practice physical exam skills, and present cases to
the attending physician. No experience is necessary
to volunteer.
We see about 3-10 women and children patients
each week. Residents make use of the Clinic for
care of acute or chronic conditions.
Patients without primary care homes are referred
to clinics in the community for ongoing care. We
have resources to facilitate any necessary referrals.
