BAGELS & BOOKS/BITES & BOOKS
Will meet Monday, December 7 at 10 am in the Library and
at 7 pm in the Alpert Room. The book being discussed is My
Father’s Paradise: A Son’s Search for His Jewish Past in Kurdish Iraq
by Ariel Sabar. Sabar grew up in California, the son of a professor
of Hebrew at UCLA who had grown up in an ancient village in
northern Iraq where the native language was still Aramaic. The
birth of his own son causes Ariel Sabar to explore his father’s and
his own background. This discussion will be facilitated by Susan
Chalom, professor of English at Wayne State University. There is
a fee of $30 for the series, $25 for members of The Friends of the
Library or Sisterhood. The drop-in fee is $10 per session.
YOO HOO, MRS. GOLDBERG
My apologies to Fred Foreman whose name was inadvertently
left off the “thank-you” list in the October Bulletin. Fred ran
the sound system and was responsible for everyone being able to
clearly hear and enjoy the movie. Thank you Fred!
THE RUTH FRANKLIN EINSTEIN
EDUCATION ASSISTANCE FUND
Anita Naftaly Family
Circle Conference
The Ruth Franklin Einstein Education Assistance Fund, named in
memory of the oldest of Rabbi Leo M. Franklin’s daughters, continues to
be a mainstay in the Jewish community as it provides interest-free loans
to Jewish college students in the metro Detroit area. The Fund is part
of the consortium known as JELS, Jewish Education Loan Service, which
disburses hundreds of thousands of dollars in interest-free loans each year.
These loans help Jewish young adults, including Beth El students, pursue
their undergraduate and graduate or professional degrees.
As you know, Michigan institutions of higher learning have steeply
increased tuition. Many students are forced to supplement any scholarships
or PELL grants they may have received with expensive interest-bearing
loans.. Monies from the Einstein Fund help these students to alleviate the
burden of repaying expensive loans.
The Einstein Fund is able to make these loans because of your donations
to the fund and the excellent and timely repayments by loan recipients.
We encourage you to consider the Einstein Fund when honoring or
remembering friends and family.
