SERVING WINNIPEG
SINCE 1935
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
BY WAYNE PRUDEN
Where do the weeks go? I thought
I just finished my message for
May but apparently that was
almost a month ago. So I guess I am
responsible for another message for the
Month of June. Perhaps the word
“responsible” is this month’s message.
Already we are hearing of reports that the Winnipeg Police
“Service” (the word ‘service’ would appear to be some public
relations “Spin Doctor’s take on a “friendlier”, “touchy-feely”
name for the Police Force) are making traffic stops for some
rather “iffy” transgressions. However, having said that, if I am
stopped because I have a bulb burned out or have no front
license plate attached, and in fact I do have a bulb out or no
front license plate attached. Then it is pretty much my fault, or
my responsibility, to make sure that I comply with all the
regulations regarding the operation of a vehicle on the road. I
do however object to the automatic fine for minor transgressions
rather than a warning with a time limit to rectify the infraction. In
the case of faulty light bulbs it should be fairly obvious that one
could do a walk-around to make sure all lights are working and
then have a filament break when traveling over the collection of
cracked pavement and potholes that we refer to as Winnipeg
Streets. In this case a warning should be given with a time limit to
correct the problem. Even an armed robber gets his day in court
and an opportunity to plead his case, before he finds out what his
penalty is. It would seem that the problem is, in one scenario, a
burned out bulb. So write up a warning ticket, the operator shows
up at a police station and verifies that he has had it fixed, problem
solved. Right? Mmmm…yes, but the City did not get an easy two
or three hundred dollars, so maybe that is what it is really all about.
Like the infamous line “follow the money”!
Going to court and pleading guilty “with an explanation”
might make you feel a little better but, it is still guilty, with the
attached fines and demerits. You must go to court and plead
not guilty then follow through with the appropriate actions.
I am very familiar with a case where a vehicle was stopped
by the RCMP during a roadside check stop. The Officer
informed the driver that his vehicle was not properly registered/
insured and he would have to leave it there to be impounded.
The driver showed the Officer his registration, it matched his
plate (both of which were only a few months old) and the Officer
went back to his computer. After some time the Officer returned
and to his credit said “something is fishy here”, this all looks as
it should but the plates do not show up on MPI’s computer. He
then escorted the driver and his car home, instead of
impounding the vehicle, but still wrote out a ticket for failure to
show proper registration of a motor vehicle. The driver is now
waiting for his court date, about a six month wait, and then he
will have a chance to explain, with confirming letters from the
MPI Agent/Broker, that an employee of the insurance firm
neglected to fill in the new plate number on the MPI computer
when the plates were purchased some months ago.
Interestingly enough, during those months, the car had been
in a collision and repaired, with no one twigging to the fact that
the plates on the car were “not registered”.
This month’s message is, if you are guilty, take responsibility.
If you feel you are not guilty or are wrongly charged, don’t give
them the “easy” money; demand your day in court. If we make
it a little tougher for them to “earn” their fines maybe they will
back off a little.
We won’t even mention the little story in the papers recently
that discussed the “ticket quota” for our friendly, touchy-feely,
police SERVICE.
NEXT GENERAL MEETING • Thursday, June 14 @ 7:00 p.m • Headingley Community Centre at 5353 Portage Ave.
EDITOR’S
NOTES
BY JEFF RENTZ
Well, I guess with anything new there
are some growing pains. In order to try
and induce more member participation
in the MCAAC Mileage Award the
executive has decided that there will be
three categories of prizes. Category #1-1946 and older,
Category #2-1946-1969, Category #3-1970 and newer.
Hopefully this will get a few more members signed up. There
should be a form on the back page of the SMR, or see me or
email me and I will get you a form.
• •
I was waiting excitedly for the big parcel to arrive and it finally
did, my new 3 ¾ in wide whitewall radial tires for the “Green
Hornet”. Had them put on at my garage and took the old girl
out for a spin, what an awesome ride. I couldn’t believe the
difference, much easier and more pleasant to drive, I would
never have guess radial tires would have made such a
difference. Took her out to my Dad’s for him to have a look and
parked on his nice brand new concrete driveway...and when I
got home I got a phone call from him that my car leaked all
over his new driveway, so I had to take a trip back and try and
scrub the tranny fluid stain out. No more parking on his driveway
for me. I guess that’s the next big thing to fix.
• •
Car season is now in full swing, try and get out to as many
events as you can. You never know when you are gonna get
rained out, or have a break down (you or your card), so don’t
say “I’ll go next time”...get out and do it NOW. Drive safe my
friends. Happy Father’s Day to all the Dad’s out there, thanks
for being there, we love you.
HALF MOON LUNCHEON
WORDS & PHOTOS BY RAY SMITH
The Half Moon was well attended on Monday, May 21. About
45 members attended bringing 25 antique cars ranging from a
1966 Rolls Royce to a 1929 Ford Model A 4 door. The weather
cooperated with a beautiful sunny day to provide real good
pictures of the beauties the members did bring out. Half Moon
provided a scrumptious menu and Bryne McKay provided
jackets for those who had ordered them. On the back of some
of the jackets was a picture of the old Half Moon and the Club
Bus, Mr, Rostecki’s 1928 Imperial, Mr. Wolf Fuhr’s 1940 Ford
and Mr. Pruden’s 1938 Buick. Well done on the jackets. I here
there are some left. Contact Bryne McKay. The special Half
Moon Monday’s have been held for many years and are
scheduled on holidays when all can attend. It was a great day
enjoyed by all and have you tried their hamburgers. Delicious.
Check these cars over. See you next holiday Monday.
15 TH ANNUAL RED RIVER
VALLEY SWAP MEET
SUBMITTED BY GORD BRUNETTE
Another year has passed and another swap meet. Again this
year the weather was great which showed by the large number
of participants and visitors. I would venture to guess that the
Red River Valley Swap Meet has become the largest of its kind
between the
Red Deer Alberta Swap Meet and the Barrie Ontario Swap Meet
Thanks all the volunteers that worked the swap meet and
who made it a resounding success. This year was our most
successful and if was not for the volunteers we could not have
accomplished the successes we have had over the past 15
years. Job well done by all.
I would like to thank you very much for coming and sharing your Classic cars
with our classroom. We really appreciate your time.
I though you might enjoy some of the comments from our kids:
- “I like the horn and the wheels on the black car. It had white on the tires, and
words. I don’t know what it said”
- “It has a planet on it.”
- “It did not have seatbelts.”
- “I liked that we got to climb in the truck.”
- “Me like the horn.”
- “I liked the black car and the guy who showed us the car. He was nice!”
These are some of the exact comments that were made by the adults who
viewed the cars. Just shows that these beautiful vehicles appeal to all ages.
Thanks again, Joy Lywak, Kindergarten teacher, Principal Sparling School
** Thanks Paul Horch & George Rogers for their memorable showing....
