PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEBY JOHN EWINGWOW… what a great show! The Wilsons, Wayne and Sharon, and the Dycks, John and Bev,did a first class job of coordinating this clubdisplay initiative. The club did not competeagainst the other club displays as wewanted the larger area to showcase thebreadth of the club. And what a show!Wayne and Sharon logged hours andhours preparing display materials, artifacts, vintage clothing and accessories for the mannequins. Each one so truly representative of each of the vehiclesdisplayed. We got so very lucky with the weather, as I can attestto, as I was able to get my car out of its winter storage early (nosnow piles!), and indeed was able to drive in and out of theshow on clean, dry roads. The club bus won a major award for best Ford in the show. And every display vehicle won an award for outstanding or bestin class. And the volunteer effort was exceptional. All the usualsuspects and a few new ones.We ‘found’ a few new members, and several old membersand friends of the car hobby who had many stories to tell of thecars, and motorcycles of their youth.NEXT GENERAL MEETING • Thursday, May 13 @ 7:00 p.m • Headingley Community Centre at 5353 Portage Ave.EDITOR’SNOTESBY BRYNE MCKAYWanted! The Club is solicitinginformation so George Rogers cancompile a publication at the end ofour 50 th year. It will be a club scrapbook of happenings, souvenirs and sightings by membersduring the year. Please send in any observations you havemade.… maybe something you saw along a road side, maybeyou have a picture or clipping from one of our local newspapersor maybe you have a scrap book of events. It can be as shortas a line or two or a full story. Please send your submission toMCAAC (Attention: George Rogers) at P.O. Box 1031, Winnipeg,Mb R3C 2W2 or email gerogers@shaw.ca. President JohnEwing said “Let’s send a mountain of information for Georgeto sort through.”Received a ‘Heads Up’ from Don Robertson stating that oneof Winnipeg’s auto parts suppliers is moving into larger facilities. As of July Walker Auto Parts on King Edward Street will belocated at 880 Century Street. Checking the new MAAC EventsGuide I also noticed that former MCAAC advertiser Softy’sSpeed Shop has reopened at 1674 St. James Street. Goodluck to both in their new locations. This is probably a goodtime to mention that if possible support the advertisers in theSide Mount Reporter when making your purchases and makesure you tell them we appreciate their support. This is a reminder that our General Meetings switch to thesecond Thursday of the month with a start time of 7:00pm,same location. We will stay with Thursday meetings for May,June, July, August, September and October. Mark it on yourcalendar now!Have you checked out our website lately? Is there a pictureof your pride & joy somewhere on the site? (referring to yourclub car not a grandchild) If not, all you have to do is email mea picture stating whether we can use your full name or justI am thinking that we should support a club entry again, andmaybe next year is not too soon! The exposure we acquiredwas priceless. Vehicles you don’t see every day on the streets, and in fact don’t see on the rest of the show floor are what wecan bring. I’m thinking that 2, 66 Buick Wildcats side by sidewould be neat, or maybe 2 or 3 or 4 Chevy ½ tons of the samevintage (like an assembly line scene), or maybe a sceneshowcasing a service station activity around the time of theModel A in its hey days. Or what about a display of brands thatdon’t exist anymore (Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Hupmobile, Kaiser,Packard, Roosevelt, Studebaker… you get the idea)?Lots to do, old and new members alike should feel welcometo volunteer at any of the upcoming events. Even if you don’tknow what to volunteer for. We can find something for you andno better way to get to know other members and to get moreout of your being a member. The circle tour is coming up. Think about booking off for 4or 5 days and tour like its 1982! Sign up now.And while not on the ‘calendar’ of official events, we are intothe second year of our Adopt a Highway club undertaking. Wehave McGillivray Blvd.from the Perimeter to Brady Rd crossing.Look for the notice coming for a May date and pitch in as apicker, or a driver, or a general helper.Drive on!your first name or that you prefer no name. If you have morethan one submit them all. Our website can never have toomany good looking vehicles. Here is some good stuff for those who are ‘connected’.Publisher, Rick Penko sent in a link to a story on a car collectionowned by a gentleman in his 80’s. Make sure you check outall 4 pages. Google ‘Grandpa’s Old Ford Garage’ or go tohttp://kansastravel.org/grandpasoldfordgarage.htm. Ray Smithsent in a video onhow a VW Bugcan handle a 5 thwheel trailer.Google ‘vw bug5 th wheel’. Thelast one for thismonth was sent inby Wayne Prudenfor ‘all the maleoily geeks’. ON THE COVERWORLD OF WHEELS 2010WORDS BY HARRY MORTIMERWorld of Wheels Winnipeg is one in a series of 35 Rod and Customshows across North America. Set up day March 25 started outon the frosty side but was better than the wet snow we awoke toon the Wednesday.Harry Mortimer’s 1954 Ford (photo by Ray Smith)Bev and John Dyck and Wayne and Sharon Wilson spentcountless hours preparing for the event. They must be believersin the adage ‘If you fail to plan, you plan to fail’ because all aspectsof the MCAAC involvement went smoothly. Matching mannequinsand accessories with eight different vehicles spanning 50 yearsrequires attention to detail and lots of resources. There were alwaysMCAAC members hosting the exhibit. Some were there late andback again early the next day selling calendars, recruiting newmembers and promoting the Club. Our eight vintage vehicles were a unique gathering of originalSharon Wilson’s matching mannequins (photo by Ray Smith)Duke’. The feedback we were getting from Show officials was thatour presence added a very positive element. Our exhibit probably would have received an award but we hadforfeited that opportunity with the decision to have more vehiclesthan allowed. We chose instead to promote the MCAAC. We knowwe are good and it was all captured digitally by Al Holmberg andOtto So.Wayne Pruden’s 1938 Buick (photo by Ray Smith)Norm Spark’s 1931 Packard (photo by Ray Smith)and restored artefacts amongst a sea of fancy paint jobs andmodified metal. The eight gathered a crowd. There were alwaysvisitors at the information table or talking to members about specificvehicles. I think the most photographed item in the show was theA&W food tray on my ’53 Ford car window and the car-hop in thepoodle skirt.Student career day has been a part of the WoW shows for thepast four years. The aim is to introduce high school students toopportunities in the automotive aftermarket industry. I’m sure ourvehicles showed that beauty can be achieved without a lot of chromeand graphics. Sometimes less is best. The Show had something for everyone: lots of chrome and paint, vehicles being raffled, jobbers, and of course ‘The Fonz’ and ‘DaisyMembers with vehicles as part of the exhibit: Ed Marchuk andthe 1911 Overland touring, Norm Sparks and the 1931 Packard,Ross Metcalfe and the 1938 Indian motorcycle racer, Wayne Prudenand the 1938 Buick Special, Ken Shaw with the 1946 single seatracer, John Ewing and the 1947 Buick Roadmaster convertible, HarryMortimer and the 1953 Ford Mainline Tudor and of course the 1918MCAAC Ford Bus. I think I speak for all of the above in thanking theMCAAC for deciding to participate in the WoW, the opportunity toshow our vehicles, promote the Club and be part of the 50 thanniversary celebrations.World of Wheels MCAAC Winners:Best Ford - 1918 Ford TT BusBest in Class - 1918 Ford TT BusBest in Class - Ed Marchuk’s 1911 OverlandBest in Class - Norm Spark’s 1931 PackardBest in Class - Wayne Pruden’s 1938 BuickBest in Class - John Ewing’s 1947 BuickBest in Class - Harry Mortimer’s 1954 FordBest in Class – Marie & Ken Shaw’s 1946 Racercontinued on page 6Vol. 51 Issue #05 May 2010 — Sidemount Reporter 4

My grandfather had the first taxicompany in my home town of Picton, Ontario back in 1930. He had4 new Murray Town Sedans, all of them black with a grey interior. Thosecars became part of the Manlow boys forts in our back yard over time. Ican remember my cousins and I playing with the cars and pretendingthey were bombers in the war. The 4 taxis all went to the scrapper 30 yrslater. My dad saved the carb and a steering wheel from one of them. Istill have those parts today. My dad had a Model A pickup he woulddelivery bread and milk around town. I used to go with him on weekends. We use to get 8 cents a quart for the milk and 5 cents a loaf for the bread.Although my first car in high school was a 64Impala. Paid $400.00 for her, drove her all throughhigh school. Gave her to my younger brother whenI joined the Marines and went overseas. My firstModel A was a 30 Tudor and I paid $30.00 for her.Wasn’t much of a mechanic but fixed it up as bestas I could and drove it around town. When I wentover seas my dad and uncle restored her for me.I moved to Ottawa in 1975. I had my 30 tudor upthere and found lots of guys with Model A’s around. We did start the Canada’s Capital A’s. We held ourmeetings at Ed Macies Motel over on Carling Ave.Great bunch of guys for sure. Joe Amendola was our resident A expert.I Lived in Ottawa until 1999 and then moved to Winnipeg. Sold that ModelA but my Dad had another 30 Tudor he restored and he brought the carup to Winnipeg for me. He passed away a couple of years later. The 30Tudor became part of a bitter estate war. My step mother had the carbrought back to Belleville, Ontario and then sold it. I was crushed at thetime. My wife never figured I would get another A again since I wasn’tmuch of a mechanic. I always had the urge and kept an eye out for anyA that captured my heart. I did find a 31 Vicky in California. I was out bidon it in an Auction at Pebble Beach, Ca.I drove transport for 30 years. No accidents or tickets in all those 3.6million miles but came close the day Ispotted a 31 Tudor in a Forddealership’s window. It had a For Salesign on her. I was headed down theinterstate with my transport. I didn’t usemy signals just pulled over to the sideof the road and walked down theembankment to the dealership. It wasSunday and they were closed. I calledthem the next day from Houston. Theytold me the car was going on the auctionOld KitchenEleanor Brunette’s comment: This is a very old and interestingfamily recipe submitted by Paul Horch via his sister Judy. Itwas a favourite of their late mother Zelma Horch, and of hermother. I’ve been told that baking ammonia can be purchasedat pharmacies and that this makes a very large batch of verygood cookies. There is a little guess work to the amount offlour, as there is for all recipes similar to this one, but ourseasoned bakers will be able to judge for themselves and maytry halving the recipe.block at some antique carshow down there unless theysell it first on ebay. They weregoing to give Ebay a one daysale the following Saturday. Igot home and talked to thewife (begging helped) andshe let me bid on the car. Therest is history. The car wasmine that Saturday. All I knewabout the car at the time wasthat it was a 31 Deluxe tudor. I later found out that the car was the first carat the dealership and the original owner never didsell it. He used it around town for parades and stufflike that. It had been repainted and the originalrunning boards and splash aprons were stolen butreplaced with a set of 30’s they had up in theirwarehouse. When he passed away at 85 the sonsput the car in the back lot of the dealership in anold warehouse. The dealership was closing downand the two sons decided to sell the car. Whenthey got the car out of the warehouse the motorwas missing. They replaced it with a 29 engine theypurchased from a member in the Dallas Model Aclub.Got the A back home in Winnipeg and my love affair with A’s startedall over again. I was almost afraid to drive it too. This A had all the bellsand whistles and wasn’t an old beater. I had to remember how to drive ittoo, that was too funny. Took the wife out to vote with it and when we hadfinished there were about a dozen people over looking at her. Kind ofscared me a bit.Over the last two years we have had lots of fun. Ran out of gas 3times, not funny. Got caught in a heavy rain storm last summer, thewindshield wiper stopped working, not funny. With the windshield tiltedout my wife and I got drenched.Well the grandkids are back home from the movies so I have to signoff. Sorry I did not join the club sooner. I work in a dispatch office forParamount Trucklines and do not have much time off. I did not figure Iwould have time to be part of a club. I only work 40 hrs a week nowinstead of 70, kinda nice. Looking forward to meeting the guys.I have included some pictures and a bill of sale from another car Iown. A 53 Ford Tudor sedan. My uncle purchased the car new in 53,passed away and left me the car. I towed it to my brothers place fromBridgeport, Ct to Picton, Ontario. It is in original condition but needs tlcfor sure. Please add the car to my membership list of vehicles. Thanks, Wayne ManlowVol. 51 Issue #05 May 2010 — Sidemount Reporter 9

SPOTTED....1914 MODEL T TOWNCARWORDS & PHOTOS BY BRYNE MCKAYEditor’s comment; I spotted this car at the Prime Steel CarShow in Grand Forks on April10th. The following informationwas provided with the display.1914 FORD MODEL T TOWNCARBuilt & Owned by Rick Nelson, East Grand Forks, MnFord Town Cars were produced from 1909 to 1918, in anattempt to make a low priced luxury limousine, but one ofthe most expensive Model Ts. In 1909 a Town Car cost $1000and in the last year of production in 1918 a Town Car cost$595. Due to the bigger and more luxurious cars of the daythe Town Cars fate was to become taxis, and most weredestroyed over the years, very few originals remain today. In 1914 1,699 Town Cars were produced. LOOKING BACKEditor’s comment; The following article was extracted from theJune 1990 issue of the SideMount Reporter.MEMORABLE MOMENTSIN THE HISTORY OF THE M.C.A.A.C.BY GEORGE HARNESSIt was a spring evening in 1972 that Iwitnessed one of the historical events ofour club. This took place in Ivan Crouch’sworkshop on Madison St. What could thisbe? After over thirty years of silence, theengine of our bus again sprang into life. After a rebuild by the Automobile SupplyCo. and a few turns of the crank by Jack Mavins,a more satisfying sound had not been heard for a long time. With the shop doors open to let out the exhaust, it was a wonderthat none of the neighbours called the fire department. After this milestone in the history of our bus, much morework remained to be done. From plans drawn by our draftsmenJohn Blanchette, a new oak body was constructed. After the bus was moved around to variousmembers premises in the course of restoration,it was finally displayed at our antique auto showat the Convention Centre. At one show, theoriginal driver when the bus ran from the StreetRailway line to Selkirk down to the lockson the Red River was on hand to talkabout her days as a young girl in 1917.She was Mrs. Davis, the daughter ofGeorge Donald, known in the area as theBusman - Boatman.•••Darren Shaw (7) gives his dad, Ken Shaw, a few tips beforestarting out in his 1922 Ford Model T Speedster which is takingpart in the Lauerendrye Tour of Antique Cars (pic from theAugust 4 th 1974 Winnipeg Tribune, Photographer: Jeff Debooy).CLUB PROJECTSBY BRYNE MCKAYNEW ARRIVALSCELEBRATING OUR 50 TH ANNIVERSARYThree Styles ofShort Sleeve Shirts$29.00 eaCLEARANCE SALETwo Styles ofLong Sleeve Shirts$29.00 eaHowell“Hoedown”50th AnniversaryCelebrationPig RoastSaturday, May 15, 2010Stonewall, MB3:00 - 7:00 pmHowell ResidenceOn Highway 7 approx. a mile north of the intersection ofHighway 7 and 67 (approx. ¼ mile after the end of the 4 lanes)Bring a lawn chair, and beverage of your choice if desired, coffeesupplied.MCAAC Club Summer JacketRegular Price $75.00 Sale Price $45.00(1 small-medium available)Contact: Bryne Mckay at most General Meetings or call(204) 269-5037 or email brynemckay@mts.netTickets $10.00 each available fromGord Brunette, John Ewing, MortMcKechnie and Wolf FuhrGeneral Meeting Thursday, May 13 thcut off for ticket sales2:00pm meet at Sobey’s (North Main).2:30pm Paul Horch will lead group tothe HowellsVol. 51 Issue #05 May 2010 — Sidemount Reporter 11
