SERVING WINNIPEG
SINCE 1935

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
BY OTTO SO
In memoriam: member Erik Fossberg passed away on
November 8, 2005 at age of 65 years. Erik was a long-time
member and our dedicated club appraiser. We will all miss
Erik’s presence our car club occasions. A donation of $200.00
from the club was made in Erik’s memory to the Cancer Society.
MCAAC is a pioneer of swap-meet for auto parts in Manitoba.
We attract thousands of car enthusiasms; the club donates the
proceeds to Winnipeg Harvest every year. Our efforts have
long been acknowledged and this month we received another
plaque from Winnipeg Harvest (please see inside story).
NEXT GENERAL MEETING
December 11 @ 2:00 p.m
Headingley Community Centre at 5353 Portage Ave.
The December meeting is always an exciting one. Aside
from the usual end of the year election of officers, in this meeting,
we will have a vote to amended the constitution, the presentation
from NAAACCC and the Christmas party. An invitation is
extended to our advertisers and their families to attend the
Christmas Party. Headingley Community Centre graciously
waived the entrance fee to Jim’s Vintage Garages so we all
can view it. Please attend this important meeting. Bring your
family to attend the Christmas party, and browse the museum.
This will be my last message as President. I have found this
year an enjoyable challenge. Hopefully, for the elections, some
members who haven’t yet had any executive experience will
step up to the plate.
•••
EDITORIAL
BY BRYNE MCKAY
Congratulations to Cecilia and Harry Mortimer for being selected
by President Otto So as this year’s winner of the President’s
Trophy. The trophy is displayed on the front cover. I would also
like to thank President Otto So for all his efforts in organizing the
Annual Banquet. Without members like Cecilia, Harry and Otto
our club would not be nearly as interesting for the rest of us.
I would like to thank some of the contributors to this month’s
Side Mount Reporter; Derek Thille for his article on his experience
at the 2005 Fireball Chapter Stillwater Show, Harry Mortimer for
his Letter to the Editor, Chuck Ingram for his notice regarding
Judging, Eleanor Brunette for keeping us informed with her
announcements and Dayna Weiten for submitting a recipe. By
the way I have had several recipes submitted, keep them coming.
At the Christmas General Meeting on December 11 th we will
be holding our Election of Officers. As I said last month this is a
great opportunity to get involved in the club and develop new
relationships. We will be also voting on changes to our
constitution. A reference to this can be found in this issue. It
looks like we are not the only ones working on our constitution.
I received an email from MAAC with a draft copy of their new
constitution. Once it has been finalized I will publish an update
in the Side Mount Reporter.
In the minutes of the November General Meeting you will
observe that we are now members of National Association of
Antique Automobile Clubs of Canada Corporation. NAAACCC’s
roster consists of 21 Manitoba Clubs with some 700 members.
NAAACCC just held their Annual General Meeting in Winnipeg
on November 26 th . If you would like to learn more about the
NAAACCC they have a very informative web site at
www.naaaccc.ca. One of the observations I made was as
members we are entitled to savings up to 20% at more than
4000 Best Western Hotels worldwide.
On behalf of the club I would like to welcome Penghong Huang
as our newest member. At this time Penghong does not have a
club car but does work in the automobile industry.
Welcome aboard!
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
PRESIDENT’S AWARD 2005
It was totally unexpected for Cecilia and I to receive the
President’s Award for 2005. There are so many people who
expend lots of effort for the Manitoba Classic & Antique Auto
Club. At the risk of missing the obvious there are Mort and
Gord for the swap meet, Jack and Paul for the tours, Norm
managing our money, John with membership and email,
Eleanor and our directors, the Smiths and the Mavins for the
corn roast and Marilynn and Art for the Spring Fling and Annual
Banquet.
I don’t think people realize the time put in by Bryne doing
double duty with Club Projects and the Side Mount but it shows
in quality products. Of course Otto couldn’t give himself the
Award but he and Roberta put in a lot of effort for the Club. His
attention to detail was evident in the banquet where we were
well fed and well entertained.
Cecilia and I accept this Award knowing there are so many
other deserving members.
Harry Mortimer
** NOTICE OF CONSTITUTIONAL CHANGES **
A motion will be brought forward to the General meeting
to be held on December 11th, for the adoption of the
report of the 2005 Constitution Committee. The report
was enclosed with the November 2005 issue of the Side
Mount Reporter distributed to MCAAC members.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
BY ELEANOR BRUNETTE
It was with great sadness that we all learned of the passing of
our friend Erik Fossberg on November 8th. Erik was our club
appraiser since January 1991. He was very reliable and
obliging when called to do an appraisal and would often travel
beyond the city to do them.
Erik loved car shows and was always available to volunteer
at our club’s swap meet and would eagerly show his neat
Volkswagons at all the car shows he could attend until his health
failed him. I’ve been told that he attended the Toy Run which
was September 25 and that I believe was the last event which
involved all clubs for the year.
I think he lived life to the fullest and our deepest sympathies
have been sent to Phyllis, sons Don and Paul and their
families. Erik was well respected and liked within our car
club and other car clubs. He will be sadly missed by all of
us, he was one of the good guys!
I would also like to wish Charlie Steeple a speedy and
complete recovery on his knee surgery. Heal quickly Charlie
and hope to see you out at the Christmas meeting if you are up
to it.
Our thoughts and concerns are also with George Ewing
who has been in and out of hospital again. We hope that
you are feeling better today. Take care George.
WINNIPEG HARVEST & MCAAC
BY BRYNE MCKAY
At the General Meeting on November 13 th Bruce Michelski of
Winnipeg Harvest presented the Manitoba Classic and Antique
Auto Club with a limited edition print in recognition of the club’s
contributions to Harvest over the past ten years. Bruce stated
that $9,000.00 plus food has been donated. I understood that
Eleanor Brunette started the partnership with Winnipeg Harvest
and MCAAC. I contacted her and she gave me the following
history of our association with Winnipeg Harvest.
The purpose of the Winnipeg Harvest Food Bank is the same
as food banks all across America and Canada. To provide food
for those who are less fortunate and a very large percentage of
those people are children.
The idea of the general public bringing a non perishable
food item to the swap meet began in 1993. I had seen other
organizations doing it and thought it would be something good
that our car club could do and with little work or expense or
commitment to the club as there were no monetary donations
collected then. That began in later years as it became more
established. It was just a phone call over to the Harvest, they
would drop the bin off at our home. At that time I believe we
were at the Winnipeg Stadium lot and Polo Park so the food
had to be picked up from our home on the next business day.
We graduated to having the food taken to Wayne Howell’s place
of business for pick up and then when the swap meet moved
out to the Red River Exhibition Park it became even easier. The
Harvest drops the bins off there during business hours and
picks them up on the next business day. And that is how easy
it was and still is.
MCAAC ANNUAL BANQUET &
45 TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
On Saturday, October 15 th 56 people attended the MCAAC
Annual Banquet at Kum Koon Garden restaurant. The dinner
was buffet style with the food freshly made for our group. There
was an abundant amount of food and several couples took
doggie bags home.
President Otto So had a video presentation set up for the
evening showing pictures from the current year and past years.
Dean Weiten was our master of ceremonies and kept the
evening moving along. Thanks to all our sponsors, there were
numerous door prizes handed out and many went home with a
gift. The biggest prize of the night was handed out by President
Otto who presented Cecilia and Harry Mortimer with the
President’s Trophy for their exceptional volunteer efforts to the
club.
Several members were brave enough to get up in front of
the group to tell one or two stories of past experiences relating
to the automobile hobby. Everyone enjoyed them and had a
good laugh.
A big THANK YOU to everyone who contributed in making
this a very enjoyable evening.
LOOKING BACK
Editor’s comments; The following was taken from the MCAAC
June 1961 Sidemount Reporter…....
I would like to take this opportunity as your Chairman of Club
activities to thank you one and all for the fine support in the
recent 50 th Anniversary Parade in the City of Transcona. True,
you all could not participate. Some donated their cars, others
drove. Some painted signs, and others by attending meetings,
assisted in our overall planning by discussions and suggestions.
Cars originally slated to take part were twelve (12), but due to
business circumstances (Don Davidson, Model “A” Roadster)
could not attend. Bob Thomas could not get his 1928
Studebaker Coupe to idle. Very unfortunate, after all his efforts
and expenses to prepare the event. I am sure that on your
behalf you would expect me to kindly thank Bob Rostecki who
drove in from Brandon to participate in the parade. This was
quite an effort on his part, and hard on his pocketbook; that is
the kind of caliber our Club members have shown they are
made of. Also, to Lloyd Orsted who drove in from Langruth,
Manitoba — Good Showing Boys.
Club members cars actually participating were:-
1) Jack McGuigan’s 1917 Model “T” Ford Touring
2) Bob Miles 1926 Model “T” Ford Coach, driven by Richard
Smith
3) T. Scott’s 1927 Model “T” Ford Coach, driven by Ab Allan
4) Tony Reid’s 1927 Model “T” Ford Coach
5) Dave Freisen’s 1928 Model “A” Ford Coach
6) Mr. Gross (non-member) 1931 Model “A” Ford Coach
7) Lloyd Orsted’s 1928 Durant
8) Bob Rostecki’s 1930 Packard Sedan
9) Rennie D’Auteil’s 1938 LaSalle Coupe
10) Jack Mavins 1947 Chrysler Town & Country
Nice going gang. Let us keep up this spirit and I hope in some
of our future tours some of the other cars will participate.
JUDGING & JUDGE MEET
BY CHUCK INGRAM
By now you are aware that there was no judging carried out
this year. The judge meet has fallen behind the times.
I had advertised in the Sidemount for volunteers regarding the
judge meet at Dugald for 2005. Alas the only response was
from a non member who was willing to help judging. As to the
response from the club members I regretfully inform you there
was absolutely none. At the meeting before the Dugald show I
called forth with a motion to suspend the 2005 judge meet.
After a brief discussion the motion was passed. Now I’m looking
at 2006 and I will continue as Judge Meet chair person for this
term if you wish to look at continuing the judge meet.
Now there are a few ways to look at this.
1 is to have it with the Dugald costume show.
2 is to have judging done during a meeting.
3 is to have a judge meet that would be a closed club event.
4 is to bring up the judging quality to a respectable point.
My views are that:
• 1 is no longer really viable
• 2 the time element would not work
That leaves #’s 3 and 4.
• 3 (Possibly )as it was a great outing in the past what with the
pancake breakfast and the families socializing. I think that this
would be a viable approach.
There is also the possibility of using the community center and
Dean our VP will be asking the person in charge about this. It is
a nice facility as those who have been there know. I still
somehow think it would be nice to have it on grass.
• 4 is where we are weak. We would need to setup a program
to educate members willing to be judge captains and as well
those interested in judging. In the past it was taking 20 +
minutes to judge one car. To me this is unacceptable as 5
minutes should normally be adequate. Of course there will be
exceptions to the rule such as debating over ties and if it is
original.
Now to rejuvenate the Judge Meet will require time as well
as volunteers and the members input. This can only be
accomplished with your willingness to see this tradition carried
forth. If the status quo remains and there is not the will of the
members there is only one alternative and that is to let the judge
meet slip into the past. If I feel there is not an adequate response
I will consider that there is no longer the interest and will put a
motion forth to no longer hold an annual judge meet.
I therefore ask for your input regarding the above. I also
want you to seriously consider your participation. Accordingly
I welcome all your suggestions and your support.
You can reply to this or express your wish to volunteer by
calling me at (204) 661-8380 or by email:
INTERESTING STUFF...
2005 FIREBALL CHAPTER STILLWATER SHOW
SEPT. 17, 2005, STILLWATER, MINN.
BY DEREK THILLE
Well, even though my ’62 Special didn’t make the trip, I did,
and had a lot of fun. I got to put a few faces to names that I
have seen in print or online, had a number of great
conversations, and managed to learn a few nuggets that will
apply to my cars. It is good to have a fully charged battery in
the camera too.
Here are a few photos from the show.
Here’s show chair Charlie King directing traffic.
Some of the late 50s to early 60s cars
A really nice ’55 convertible
Our very own forum member Tom’s nice ’59 &
the sweet ’62 Skylark that is his wife’s car
This ’56 wasn’t there for the entire event, but it’s the same model as mine
On the subject of ’29s, here is a replica of a
traveling window display for Andersen Windows.
Here’s a really nice 1929. I really enjoyed talking with Dennis the owner.
He restored this car himself and it was really exciting to hear the car run
and learn a few details that will be helpful with mine. It has the same
colour of interior as mine as well.
•••
My experience really shows that these events are really about
the people. It is the cars and the love of them that brings us
together, but it is about the friendships we make.
