PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEBY WAYNE PRUDENYou may recall that when you filledout your membership renewal youwere asked to answer a number ofquestions pertaining to the MCAAC. Thiswas not idle curiosity on the part of yourExecutive Committee. They have beenreviewing the answers you sent in to get ageneral idea of the mood of our members. One answer thatstruck me was “should the Captain not know where the ship isgoing”. I think I know what the member is inferring and I wouldagree that in the authoritarian world of a “Ship’s Captain” he isthe “Boss”, the final word (except for the ship’s owners). However, the MCAAC Executive Committee does not feel thatthey are “The Boss”, they are the representatives of themembers and as such they are interested in what the membersthoughts are regarding the Club and how it is being run. I wasquite pleased to see that most of you are generally happy withthe way things are going and that is a reflection on pastExecutive Committees you have chosen. To them I say “welldone”. An area of the survey that did generate some interestwas the questions about meeting places and meeting times. The Committee is taking a good look at the responses to see ifimprovements can be made. “Driving Season” Thursday nightmeetings were discussed with one comment being “there areno more people showing up on Thursday than there were onSunday”. That is a good thing as far as comparing currentThursday meetings to past Sunday meetings. Sunday meetingattendance during the driving season was dwindling due tothe proliferation of Sunday car shows. Now our members canattend all the shows they want and still attend MCAAC monthlymeetings, and……WE WANT TO SEE MORE OF OURMEMBERS COMING OUT TO MEETINGS….WE MISS YOU!!!The MCAAC Spring Fling is on April 17 th , a great way toaccelerate into the “driving season”. We look forward to seeingyou. Then the “Swap Meet” on May 15 th , always a great crowd, thanks Gord and Mort and all your volunteers. On May 28, 29we have the Metcalfe/Touchette “Most Excellent Adventure” amini Manitoba road trip, (will this be open to boats?) Then, onJune 11 th , our own Show & Shine did I say “OUR OWN” Show& Shine?? Our own MCAAC Show & Shine should be thePremiere summer car show, perhaps, not in numbers of autos, but certainly in quality and variety. But no one will ever know ifyou don’t bring out those old Austins (David?), Buicks (lots ofthem), Cadillac/LaSalle (Jack, Gary, Garth, Richard, Robyn),Chevrolet (Murray, James, Ross, Glenn, Sam, Richard, Mort),Chryslers (Bob, Wayne, Jack). You get the idea, bring out thoseVehicles no one sees anymore, the Packards (Norm), Hudsons(Murray, Blake), Hupmobiles (Rod, Ken), Overland,(Ed, Murray)Studebaker, (Art, Ron, Morley, Sam) etc. etc.No one club can put out as many varied and interesting clubcars as we can, so lets get-er-done!!I just know this is going to be the best 51 st year any ManitobaAuto Club has ever had!!NEXT GENERAL MEETING • Thursday, May 12 @ 7:00 p.m • Headingley Community Centre at 5353 Portage Ave.EDITOR’SNOTESBY JEFF RENTZWell, let’s recap, the ice fishing sucked (forour group anyway), the weather was great, but alas the fish didn’t like what we wereoffering. My very first winter ice fishingEVER, and I got skunked, oh well, had fun. Then there was theWorld of Wheels, to be frank, I was disappointed. I cannot imagethe amount of hard work that the organizers put in, but I was leftwondering “was that it?” Being new to the craft, I don’t know whatgoes on behind the scenes, but I thought for sure our club wouldhave had a rather large presence?? I will have to look into that fornext year. Congratulations to Ron Alexander and his 1940 MercuryCoupe. Kelly and I came to the conclusion that life is too short andwe wern’t getting any younger, so we decided to buy the new traveltrailer we saw at the RV show. We shopped around and found agreat deal on the same unit in the USA. Heading down soon topick it up, hopefully the flood waters are not too bad. Our thoughtsand prayers go out to all those affected by higher water levels.Looking forward to the upcoming Rodarama Show.• •Saturday April 9/11, the first day the old girl went out for a ride(my old Chrysler, not Kelly...lol). Gotta love it when you can getthose old wheels out. Still got some tinkering to do (somehowI think that never stops, lol), but can’t wait to take her outnumerous times this summer.• •To all you “Moms” out there, we probably don’t say it enough,“Thanks for everything, We Love you”• •ANNOUNCEMENTSBY ELEANOR BRUNETTECongratulations to Wayne and Kathy Pruden on thebirth of their new grand daughter, Claire AshtynBirch. Little Claire arrived on Friday, April 8th, andweighed in at 8 pounds 6 ounces and just in timefor the Easter bunny. Our wishes for a speedy recovery go out to BillKuz who is recovering from surgery. We’ve missedyou and we hope to see you out at the swap meet. Also we’ve learned that Murray Brothers, who waspresident in 1980, is now residing in RiverviewCenter and a note of friendship has been sent tohim from the car club. I believe that he hadmaintained his membership until hishealth started to fail so let’s make a special effort tohave lots of cars out to the Show and Shine atRiverview on June 4th. Hopefully Murray willbe able to come out to view and enjoy the old carsof his time with the club.Vol. 52 Issue #05 May 2011 — Sidemount Reporter 1

It was not a very warm day but atleast seven people brought out their OLD cars. There were over100 people in attendance We enjoyed an excellent brunch withsecond helpings for those who could handle it. After we ate,Marilynn had 5 brave members participate in her game ofgetting to know people. A short speech by President WaynePruden followed that. We then did the draw for many door prizes. One of the favourite prizes was the sets of wooden wrencheshand crafted by Harry Mortimer. They can actually be used assalad forks, and they are numbers matching. Great work Harry. There was lots of visiting with people we may not have seen forseveral long winter months. As usual, Marilynn did a marvellousjob of organizing the brunch and making sure we all had agreat time. A big thanks to all who participated.Vol. 52 Issue #05 May 2011 — Sidemount Reporter 4

Tata Motors is taking giant strides and makinghistory for itself. First the Land Rover/Jaguar deal, then theworld’s cheapest car, and now it is also set to introduce thecar that runs on compressed air. With spiralling fuel prices itis about time we heard some breakthrough! The Air Car, developed by ex-Formula One engineer GuyNegre for Luxembourg-based MDI, uses compressed air, asopposed to the gas-and-oxygen explosions of internalcombustionmodels, to push its engine’s pistons. Some 6000zero-emissions Air Cars are scheduled to hit Indian streetsby August 2011.The Air Car, called the “MiniCAT” could cost around Rs.3,475,225 ($8,177.00) in India and would have a range of around300 km between refuels. The cost of a refill would be aboutRs. 85 ($2.00)The MiniCAT which is a simple, light urban car, with a tubularchassis that is glued, not welded, and a body of fiberglasspowered by compressed air. Microcontrollers are used inevery device in the car, so one tiny radio transmitter sendsinstructions to the lights, indicators, etc. There are no keys - just an access card which can be readby the car from your pocket. According to the designers, itcosts less than 50 rupees per 100 Km (about a tenth that of apetrol car). Its mileage is about double that of the mostadvanced electric car (200 to 300 km or 10 hours of driving), afactor which makes a perfect choice in cities where 80% ofmotorists drive at less than 60 Km. The car has a top speedof 105 Kph.Refilling the car will, once the market develops, take placeat adapted petrol stations to administer compressed air. Intwo or three minutes, and at a cost of approximately $2.00,the car will be ready to go another 200-300 kilometers.Prototypes of such vehicles do exist but it is unclear whenor if such cars will be available to consumers. Fact or fiction??Remains to be seen...Vol. 52 Issue #05 May 2011 — Sidemount Reporter 9

THIS MONTH IN HISTORYMay 23rd 1934Wanted outlaws Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parkerare shot to death by Texas and Louisiana statepolice officers as they attempt to escape apprehension in astolen 1934 Ford Deluxe near Bienville Parish, Louisiana.Beginning in early 1932, Bonnie & Clyde set off on a two-yearcrime spree, evading local police in rural Texas, Louisiana andNew Mexico before drawing the attention of federal authoritiesat the Bureau of Investigation (as the FBI was then known).Though the couple was believed to have been responsible for13 murders by the time they were killed, along with severalbank robberies and burglaries, the only charge the Bureaucould chase them on was a violation of the National MotorVehicle Act, which gave federal agents the authority to pursuesuspects accused of interstate transportation of a stolenautomobile. The car in question was a Ford, stolen in Illinoisand found abandoned in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. Inside, agentsdiscovered a prescription bottle later traced to the Texas homeof Clyde Barrow’s aunt.In the spring of 1934, federal agents traced the Bonnie &Clyde gang to a remote county in southwest Louisiana, justbefore dawn, a posse of police officers from Texas and Louisianalaid an ambush along the highway near Sailes, Louisiana. WhenBonnie & Clyde appeared, going some 85 mph in another stolenFord—a four-door 1934 Deluxe with a V-8 engine, the officerslet loose with a hail of bullets, leaving the couple no chance ofsurvival despite the smallarsenal of weapons they hadwith them. The bullets foundtheir targets! No less than 167bullets were fired at thenotorious outlaws. The bullet-ridden Deluxe, originally owned by RuthWarren of Topeka, Kansas, was later exhibited at carnivals andfairs then sold as a collector’s item; in 1988, the Primm ValleyResort and Casino in Las Vegas purchased it for some $250,000.Clyde’s enthusiasm for cars was evident in a letter he wroteearlier in the spring of 1934,addressed to Henry Ford himself:“While I still have got breath in mylungs I will tell you what a dandycar you make. I have drove Fordsexclusively when I could get awaywith one. MEMBERSHIP NEWSEL HAY - MEMBERSHIP CHAIRMANI would like to welcome our newest member – Bob & SandyMcDill from Winnipeg and also Dennis & Debbie Korne whorejoined. We now have a total of 144 paid up members plus21 Honourary members for a total of 165.1940 MERCURY STORYSUBMITTED BY RON & MARG ALEXANDERI would like to take you back in time and tell you a story about a 1940Mercury that I owned in the early 1950’s. I was currently driving a1928 Ford Model A Roadster when a very good friend of the familyJack Jackson called me to tell me about a car at River Brother’s garagethat I should come and look at, it had a real bad motor problem andthe owner didn’twant the car anylonger and toldthem to sell it. Sooff I went to look atthis 1940 MercuryHollywoodCoupe, when I firstsaw the car Icouldn’t get overhow nice it was,the garage toldme that theywould fix the noise in the motor and it would be ready for the weekend, back I went to look at the car after it was fixed it ran like a top and yes,I bought the car. I had the car for several years and it was used asour Wedding Car in October, 1953 and then sold it in about 1956 to agentleman on Qu’Appelle Ave in Winnipeg. This gentleman told meI was a darn fool for selling it as there was only 3 of these cars in thecity and now he owns one of them. In the years to follow we had losttrack of the owner and the car but the last lead we had was that it hadgone to Minneapolis. Over the Years we spent many a mile followingleads on any 40 Mercury Coupes they all turned out to be verydisappointing but we never gave up looking. Now my son Dave never gave up looking either and was alwayslooking on the computer and reading the car newspaper and oneday spotted this ad in the paper and finally decided with theencouragement of his wife to give the ad a call to see if the car wasstill for sale. Unfortunately the car was to be sold that weekend andthe couple was going to fly in the next day and buy it and drive ithome, but if the deal fell through he said he would call Dave backand guess what the deal fell through and he did call Dave back, Daveand Kathy looked at some pictures of it and decided it was what theywere looking for and sent him a deposit to hold it until they couldcome and look at it. Now the kids were already scheduled to starttheir holidays and unbeknown to us had changed their destinationand plans somewhat to go and look and buy the car in Ontario outsideof Toronto. So off to Ontario they drove and when they finally gotthere it was everything that they were expecting and bought it andhad it shipped home on a car carrier. This car from what we understand was in a museum in Little RockCalifornia and the owner of the museum died so they put all the carsup for auction about 30 years ago. The 1940 Mercury was auctionedoff with the rest of the cars from the museum and the gentleman thatbought it passed away only owning the car for a month. The nextfellow bought the car from the widow and he too passed away afterhaving the car for a couple of months. George and his son had triedto buy this car before with no luck, when the second fellow passedaway they were able to purchase the car from the second widow andowned the Mercury for approx 25 years (Lets hope the chain hasbeen broken of the owners not out living the car). Now due to healthreasons and he was getting up in age, he and his son had decided itwas time to sell the car, it nearly broke their heart to see the car goand in fact the son said he didn’t want to be there when they came topick up the car, he did stay but was very sad to see the Mercuryloaded on the flatbed and go down the road and turn the corner anddisappear. The car arrived in Winnipeg a week later to its new homeand the kids went and picked it up from the car carrier and drove itover to our place to show us. The door bell rang and I looked out thewindow as I got up and I could see these red wheels on a car whenI got to the door all I could say is AWhere did you find the 40 Mercury@,never mind Dad is what I got in return, put your coat and hat on andcome outside and see it. Well that was a big surprise but even abigger surprise when they said we were the proud owners of this 40Mercury, wow it had been 50 plus years since my last Merc andwasn=t really sure I would ever see or even own another one, what aday. The thrill of the chase has been captured and now it is the timeto start to enjoy our treasure. Our first adventure was with the Worldof Wheels 2011 and won best in class 1935-48 and met manyinteresting people and we hope to continue to enjoy our prizedpossession throughout the coming years.Special thanks to Dave & Kathy for making the dream come true.1948 CHEVROLET WOODIESUBMITTED BY EL & GAIL HAYWhen Gail & I were in Hawaii this past January, we rented a car& touredaround the Island. We drove through a little town called Haleiwa onthe North Shore of Ohau & went as far as the road goes unless youhave a 4 wheel drive vehicle. Returning, we noticed this 1948 Woodiewith surf boards on top parked near the beach; we stopped to have acloser look. While checking it out, the owner – Michael Hemperly cameover to chat with us. I purchased a t-shirt from him with a picture of his48 Woodie on it. After we arrived home I contacted Michael & askedfor a brief story about his car. This is what he said:“If you go to my web site you’ll see my first Woodie on our homepage, the Canadian built ’37 Ford. It was right hand drive. It wasshipped to England to haul luggage before America was in the war.The 1948 Chevy Fleetline Woodie is shown on the contact page of myweb site with the biplane at our local air strip at Dillingham Field. (Notmy plane). Eventually the Ford ended up in Hawaii. I bought it in 1992despite the right hand drive. Loved the car & had to have it. I owned itfor 12 years & drove it every day.In the fall of 2004 I met a surfer from Southern Alabama who wasalso a car guy. He had seen the ’37 Ford at my favorite windsurfingbeach for years however we never met because I was always in thewater. One morning on that trip we finally met. He asked me if I wouldever part with the Ford. My answer was yes if a suitable replacementcame along. I was thinking more of a ’37 Slant Back with a flat headlike what I was used to. When the email with photo’s of the ’48 Chevycame I was ready to make a deal. Shipping went smoothly. It wassupposed to happen. The Ford became a left hand car with a nicerestoration so I’m told. I’m perfectly happy with six volts, six cylinders, juice brakes, no more cables. The Chevy was a dealership car fromFargo, North Dakota.
