SERVING WINNIPEG
SINCE 1935
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
BY JOHN EWING
The thank yous are starting to flow in
earnest now.
The tech talk for the women at the
March general meeting was fun,
informative and tasted good too. Big thank
you to the Prudens, and in particular Kathy,
for taking the initiative, getting the
supplies, preparing in advance and
running the fancy sandwich making
session. We had over a dozen participants
and I understand it was a good time! Thanks Kathy.
Marilynn Schultz (and Art !) prepared cookies of two varieties
for the general meeting and free coffee and cookies were
enjoyed by all. Marilynn also held a great 50/50 draw with
proceeds going to support the Spring Fling, that Marilynn and
Art (and I have to think a few conscripts!) put together . Marilynn
spares no energy in the preparations and organization and the
proof is in how large (and growing) the attendance is year after
year. This 50 th event is sure to be another great one!
Bryne continues to work tirelessly for the club, getting new
club project materials with an eye on the special 50 th events for
the new ‘stuff’. Look for great new items by the swap meet
days of spring and summer.
Great job by Ross (and his merry band of helpers) in the
Reunion event in February. And a big thanks to all tireless efforts
by the members, and most who attended will agree the archive
materials and pictures were of great interest. Thanks Jack
Mavins, Ken Shaw, Otto So, Paul Horch, and their team of
helpers.
I know I am treading on thin ice by naming names, as there
are others who pitch in and are not named. This will continue
all year, as you can imagine, as there will be events going
through the year and I will try to thank everyone as we go.
Next up is the World of Wheels show, and the Wilsons and the
Dycks are all a go-go on this. This will be a great showcase for
the club and then bring on April, and all the cars will be out and
on the road.
NEXT GENERAL MEETING • Sunday, April 11 @ 2:00 p.m • Headingley Community Centre at 5353 Portage Ave.
EDITOR’S
NOTES
BY BRYNE MCKAY
We are making progress with our
ratio of hard copies of the Side
Mount Reporter (SMR) being mailed
compared to the number going out
by email only. In December 2007 we were sending out 107
hard copies to members along with 40 members who only
received SMR by email. As of March 2010 we are sending out
93 hard copies to members and 73 members receive SMR by
email only. Conclusion: December 2007 27% of members
receive SMR by email only and as of March 2010 44% receive
by email only. Hopefully the day will come when no hard copies
have to be sent out.
Derek Thille was telling me about the Largest One-day Car
Show and Swap Meet held in Minneapolis/St Paul. It is put on
by the Gopher State Buick Club. They hand out Awards for 60
Classes incorporating different years and makes. Sounds like
a fun time. Check it out at www.gopherstatebuick.org/
springshow/ or call (651) 770-8096.
For those connected to the internet, you will find these
websites sent in by our vast membership very interesting. The
first one was submitted by Jim Drummond. You will never
believe the tight spot this fellow parks in beside his house. Go
to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbZvnH0zADA . The
next one was sent in by our publisher Rick Penko. It is
about 1940 Dodge barn find which was hidden for half a
Century ! Google “the 1940 barn dodge”. Bill Shestopalka
sent in a link to a gentleman’s collection of model cars. But
this is not any regular model collection. Google “Flickr:
Michael Paul Smith’s Photostream” and you will be blown
away.
When a member is good enough to submit a story, picture
or link their name is tagged to it when it appears in the SMR.
Sometimes I receive several emails on the same story/link.
When this happens the policy is to use the name of the
person who first sent in the story/link. Hopefully you find
that fair and the automotive information will keep coming in.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
BY ELEANOR BRUNETTE
Our sincere condolences have been sent out to Maybelle Fraser
and family on the passing of Laurie Fraser on February 26th at
the age of 85. Laurie had been a long time member of this
club but had not been active for several years because of ill
health. I know that he did enjoy the hobby of restoring antique
cars which he shared with his nephew and fellow car club
member Jim Scurfield. Laurie really was one of the Good Guys!
Our sympathies also go out Madeline McGuigan on the
passing of her brother John Robitaille on February 22 at the
age of 86. John was one of the Charter Members of the Manitoba
Classic and Antique Auto Club.
Also our get well wishes go out to Bill Crocker who
has been in hospital and to Martin Schellenberg who had
suffered a heart attack. We wish you both speedy
recoveries.
ON THE COVER
MCAAC 5O TH ANNIVERSARY REUNION EVENING
SUBMITTED BY ROSS METCALF (PRESIDENT 1983)
On February 27 th , 2010, history repeated itself as the membership of
the MCAAC attended the 50 th anniversary evening honoring the
founding of the club. Twenty-five years ago, the MCAAC also held its
25 th anniversary
evening at the same
location – the
Assiniboine Park
Conservatory.
Approximately 125
people, of which 23
were in full period
costume of the
1920s, 30s, 40s and
50s, attended to
celebrate the clubs
golden anniversary.
Vol. 51 Issue #04 April 2010 — Sidemount Reporter 4
Almost 25 years of
the Presidency was
represented
including both
former female presidents, Lil Sparks and Evelyn Touchette. Evelyn
even won the best-dressed female costume and past-president George
Rogers won for the best-dressed male category. Past-president, Robyn
McCombe (1985) and his wife
Janet, judged Bryne and
Doreen McKay as taking
home the honors of the bestdressed
couple. It’s been
many years since so many
people showed up in costume
to show off the great club
spirit. My personal favourite
was Bob Niblock who sported
his flashy 1950s dress shirt
which he bought new.
With opening remarks by
President John Ewing (the
only father and son combo to
be president – his father held
this position in 1973), it was
time to cut the two ceremonial
cakes. The honours fell to two
attending founding members
Evelyn Touchette won for the Best
and their wives. Jack and
Yvonne Mavins and Ron and
Pat Cunningham each cut a
Female Costume (photo by El Hay)
50 th anniversary cake to celebrate 50 years of the old car hobby in
Manitoba (Manitoba’s oldest car club).
Holding the new club banner for a photo
op were Ken and Marie Shaw who have
been active members since the first year
after the club got started. Ken and Marie,
and both their sons, Danny and Darren
were there representing the so many club
families whose children grew up enjoying
this great hobby with their parents.
Incidentally, Jack Mavins is also the
club historian and had out a very
impressive display of the club’s first 25
years. This included the whole pictorial
history of the buying and restoring of the
club bus. It was a shame that John
Blanchette, the architect behind the plans
for the bus, and also a past president and
charter member, had recently
passed on just before the 50 th
reunion. I know that John was
watching from above with a big
smile on his face.
A tremendous effort was put
forth by Ken Shaw and Paul Horch
(as a film editor) to produce over
four hours of original home movies
of club members from 1960 (the
1 st year) and after. From the private
collections of Horch, Shaw, the
Rostecki family, and George Ewing
to name just a few, this impressive
piece of history played throughout
the evening on a big-screen TV
within eyeshot of the bar. Not to be
outdone, Otto So amassed (in
another room of the Conservatory
along with the Mavins historical
display) an impressive array of still
photos shown by projector
spanning the last 10+ years.
Food and friendship, a cold
beverage on this February evening provided a superb surrounding to
honour the MCAAC 50 th anniversary reunion evening. A
commemorative photo of approximately 17 club presidents was taken,
representing almost 25 years (Dean Weiten counts as a whole bunch).
Many thanks to Jean and Gerry
Holm, Ross and Marilyn Smith and
my wife Kris for their help. The last
word of thanks is reserved for
George and Nancy Rogers for their
strong leadership at the steering
committee level and to the unsung
hero, Al Holmberg, who will be at
every event looking at the activities
through the lens of a camera. His
film will be the final outcome of our
anniversary year and I think will be
the crowning jewel on this
impressive club’s history.
As the Frostbite Tour and the
Reunion are now in the books, our
attention will be on the upcoming
events, most notably the World of
Wheels at which we are the
featured club.
She’s a 1946 Fargo ½ ton in almost original condition. It
is powered by a flathead 6 that was rebuilt by the previous
owner, runs great. I am planning on converting the electrical
to a 12 volt system. Will be painting it like a mock fire truck,
due to being a retired firefighter and now with a wellness
company. The truck will be used for advertising so I can
use my hobby (vintage vehicles) as a write off. I am still
looking for a red beacon for the roof. If there is anyone
selling one please contact me.
Glad to be a member once again as I
still have my name badge from the early
FILL ‘ER UP WITH HUMOUR
YOU CAN’T OUTSMART A WOMAN DRIVER
A woman and a man are involved in a car accident on a snowy,
cold Monday morning; it’s a bad one. Both of their cars are
totally demolished but amazingly neither of them are hurt. God
works in mysterious ways. After they crawl out of their cars,
the man is yelling.... about women drivers; the woman says,
“So you’re a man. That’s interesting. I’m a woman. Wow, just
look at our cars! There’s nothing left, but we’re unhurt. This
must be a sign from God that we should meet and be friends
and live together in peace for the rest of our days”. Flattered,
the man replies, “Oh yes, I agree with you completely; this
must be a sign from God! But you’re still at fault….women
shouldn’t be allowed to drive. The woman continues, “And look
at this, here’s another miracle. My car is completely demolished
but this bottle of wine didn’t break. Surely God wants us to
drink this wine and celebrate our good fortune.” Then she hands
the bottle to the man. The man nods his head in agreement,
opens it and drinks half the bottle and then hands it back to the
woman. The woman takes the bottle and immediately puts the
cap back on, and hands it back to the man. The man asks,
“Aren’t you having any?” The woman replies, “No, I
think I’ll just wait for the police ….”
LOOKING BACK
Editor’s comment; The following article written by Ken Shaw was copied
from the March 1995 Side Mount Reporter.
KEYSTONE KAPERS
This month I have been asked to give you a little background on the
event that we call “Keystone Kapers”. Back in the middle sixties we
were finding that a lot of club members were going to their summer
cottages almost every weekend, therefore making participation in
activities put on by MCAAC impossible during the summer months.
Thinking of the day, was that if we put on one big event in the middle of
the summer, we may be able to get the cottagers, golfers, fishermen,
etc., to stay in town and bring the whole family out to such an event.
The rest of course is history.
The first Keystone weekend of 1969 was well received by the
membership and the event turned out to be our best attended and
largest event of the year for a long time. The fact that it was held the
same time every year, made it easy for members to plan their holidays
and summer schedule accordingly. Other activities of course, usually
every other weekend, were held for the members who just liked to
drive around town or take a drive in the country in their old cars.
The Keystone weekend started on Friday evening with a registration
party to collect money, give out tickets, etc. Saturday was usually a
tour, dinner and dance. Sunday was our run to Portage La Prairie, and
for the old cars this was quite a challenge. Monday was a pancake
breakfast and a short city tour which ended early in the afternoon.
Over the years, we saw variations of this event, such as Swap Meets,
Boat Cruises, Museum tours, etc. It basically boils down to the fact
“whatever the activities people of the day can come up with”.
Well, I hope this gives you a better idea of what is meant when you
hear the words “Keystone Kapers”.
MCAAC GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY
KEYSTONE CIRCLE TOUR UPDATE
BY DENIS ROBERT
Is anyone wondering what all the silence has been about these last
few months? I don’t blame you, I’d be wondering too. It’s just that,
unlike Saint Faustina, I haven’t worked out how to be bi-local yet. I
can’t be in Texas and Manitoba at the same time. Dean Weiten has an
excuse too; I’ve been keeping him in the dark, not answering his emails,
etc, and that’s because I forgot the passwords. So he’s basically had
nothing to report.
Well, all that is changing, now that I’m back and talking to Dean
again. So, in the next couple of months or so, get ready for some
information overload as the KCT picks up steam.
And speaking of steam, did you know that one of the highlights of
the Coast-to-Coast tour in Manitoba is a ride on the Prairie Dog Central
using live steam. That’s right, and we’re renting the whole train. Of
course, priority for tickets will go to the Coasters but if they don’t fill all
300 spots, those who are signed up for the KCT will get a shot at seats
and, BIG IF there’s still room after that, MCAAC members at large will
have a chance to get on board.
Ditto for the bus tours to select Folklorama pavilions where those
on the bus will be given priority VIP seating front and center for the
shows. Please don’t ask me how I swung that. Well, okay, my grandson
is one of the Folklorama youth ambassadors.
Same thing goes for the Paddlewheel Queen or Princess if that event
materializes. After a disastrous season last year, it is unsure at this
point if either of those ships will run this year but we hope so. If not,
we’ll have another exciting adventure for you.
Now folks, we haven’t even left Winnipeg yet and I’ve given you
three good reasons to sign up for the KCT. In the coming months,
Dean and I will be giving you plenty more good reasons. But why wait
for that? If you sign up now, you can still get in for only a hundred
bucks (good reason #4). But be very mindful of that April 30 deadline.
Now here’s another good point that Dean made at the March meeting
that should be shared with all those who get the Sidemount Reporter:
DON’T WORRY! That prewar car you’ve always wanted to take on
tour, but were afraid to because it’s so slow, WILL BE FINE on this tour.
You won’t be left behind. Except for key organizers on tour who may
have to go ahead to set up events, the SLOWEST car on the tour will
be leading the pack. And Dean has already committed to bringing up
the rear to look after any breakdowns, which, of course, won’t happen
anyway.
So, you see, there is really no good reason to deprive yourselves of
all the fun we’re going to have on this tour. So go to your computer,
print up a registration form and send it in. Haven’t got a computer? No
problem! Just give Dean or me a call and we’ll get a form out to you.
Just do it. DO IT NOW!
up is April 30 after that it will cost $125. It
was pointed out that members did not
have to worry about whether their older
cars could take the pace. The slowest car
will set the pace. Ross also pointed out
that this year’s club membership card will
be a “Collector Card” produced in metal,
so it was imperative that everyone pay up
sooner rather than later. Ross also
reminded everyone about the resurrection
of the Howell’s Hoedown, a pig roast to
be held at Howell’s residence the day
before the swap meet. Tickets are
