INSIDE STORYMICKEY MOUSE& WHEELSBY OTTO SOI’m not a snowbird but like most people, I like to go towarmer places in the Winnipeg January winter. Floridais nothing new to many of you but every year I findsomething new there.I felt the US economy is still not fully recovered asmost of the theme-park seem to have less attendancethan last year. Mickey Mouse still behaves as usual butthe line-ups are shorter. There is a Friday and Saturday car show In Old Townof Orlando each week. It is almost the same asWednesday Pony Corral in Winnipeg Downtown exceptit is four times as big. I spotted some interesting vehicles(a Corvette station wagon) and some personal licenseplates as attached.I was not able to get any tickets to the Daytona 500car race. I had to settle on watching the live broadcastingin front of a giant screen. It had the same excitementexcept I did not have to wear ear-plugs. I stayed at afriend’s home for two days in Jacksonville. She is still apatriotic Winnipegger as her license plate says WPGCAN.Nothing to report on the one-week cruise because Icould not find any vehicles on the vessel. It was a niceshort 18 days holiday away from the cold and fourthousand plus digital pictures (aproximately one pictureevery 5 minutes for 18 days...Yikes!) to remember it by.Florida MemoriesVol. 46 Issue #04 APRIL 2005 — Sidemount Reporter 4

Itwas never intended as a show car, but rather, was meant to bea “research project on wheels”. The exterior of the D-528 wasdesigned by Gil Spear and the interior by John Samsen.Design studies for thecar began in late 1953or early 1954,immediately afterSpear, anxious for abreak from designing 3/8 sized concept cars, left the AdvancedDesign Studio to takeover as head of theInternational andCanadian Studio. TheD-528 was designedand built to testadvance concepts in airconditioning, seating, ingress and egress, lighting, front framecrash absorption andFord’s first car without“A” pillars. Eventhough the D-528 nowhas only twoheadlights, it was alsodesigned as Ford’s firstcar with four headlights. At the time the D-528was designed, it wasanticipated that airconditioning would, infuture years, becomean accessory more carowners woulddemand. Because airconditioning evaporators were so large they had to be locatedin the trunk, there was a concern that they restricted luggageroom. Spear’s proposed answer to the problem, incorporatedinto the design of the D-528, was to relocate the spare tire tothe back of one fender and the gas tank to the back of theother fender, with flip-top lids providing access to both.(Several years later, technical advances made it feasible toreduce the size of the evaporator and relocate it in the enginecompartment.)As originally designed by Spear, the roof of the D-528 wasshaped like a “T” with the top of the “T” folding downward toform the “C” pillars. The roof was hollow and acted as aconduit for cold air from the air conditioning evaporator locatedVol. 46 Issue #04 APRIL 2005 — Sidemount Reporter 6

INTERESTING STUFF...1955 MERCURY CONCEPT CARFOR SALE: $150,000.00 USDin the trunk. Cold air from the evaporator flowed up throughthe hollow “C” pillars and into the hollow roof section, exitingfrom perforations in the headliner. To assure an evendistribution of cold air, the perforations were in an increasinglarger diameter as they reached the front of the car. Over thedoors and extending into the roof, by about eighteen inches, were panels that were hinged towards the middle of the car.For ease of entry or exit, each panel was individually raised orlowered by an electrical motor when a door opened or closed. The D-528 and its companion car, the D-526, were the firstfull-sized, fully operational cars built by Ford personnel withfiberglass bodies. Previous Ford Motor Co. concept cars withfiberglass bodies were fabricated at Creative Industries, a Detroitarea business that built many of Ford’s early full sized conceptcars. While at MacPherson’s Special Vehicles Department, the D-528 was finished, but it was also revised several times and wasnot in completed form when the Special Vehicles design studiowas disbanded in 1958. Even after the Special Vehicles designdepartment was disbanded, there were more revisions of theD-528. The entire roof structure and the front end of the carwere redone at least once after that. “A” pillars and an interiorframework to hold the roof up were also installed. (It isprobable that the roof was designed to its present form to testthe four-door (“B”) pillar-less hardtop concept first introducedby Ford Motor Co. in 1956, but that was probably done in thefirst several months after Spear’s move to the Special VehiclesDepartment.)When Spear returned to the Styling Center, the D-526 andthe D-528 were placed in storage in the EEE Building Annex.Over the years, Spear assumed that the D-528 had beendestroyed, because the last time he saw it, it was unfinished.According to Walter Jennfeldt, one of the modelers who hadfollowed Spear to MacPherson’s design studio, but stayed onas a clay modeler in Experimental Engineering, the D-528 wasmoved from place to place for several years and every once ina while, it was used to test some new engineering concept.Because the D-528 was originally built without “A” pillars andrelied on the windshield to support the front part of the roof, ithad a habit of breaking or popping windshields when driven.According to Jennfeldt, “A” pillars werelater installed to provide support for theroof so the D-528 could be used to testseveral new ideas, including aninterchangeable seat idea.Although the D-526 was renamed theCougar and was used as a show car byFord in 1962, it was decided not toattempt to make a show car out of theD-528. In late 1962 or early 1963, theD-526 and D-528 were sent toHollywood for use in the movieindustry. After the D-528 arrived inCalifornia, George Barris, who laterturned the Futura into the Batmobile, repainted it, removed the name “D-528”from the front fenders that spelled out“Beldone”, a stage name selected byParamount Pictures. (Barris had movieindustry contacts and convinced Fordhe could get movie and TV coverage for concept cars Ford nolonger had a use for.) The Beldone was first used in the 1964Jerry Lewis movie, “The Patsy”. For the movie, the Beldonewas equipped with radio controlled remote control devices thatopened and closed the doors, trunk, and hood during one ofthe comedy scenes in the movie. After the studio was throughfilming “The Patsy”, the car was stored on the ParamountPictures lot and infrequently used in other movies or TVprograms, including a 1964 TV series called “The DuplicateMan”. It also had a little part in the movie “Back To TheFuture”.In 1984, Bob Butts, the owner of a San Diego based businessthat provided cars to the movie industry, purchased the D-528 from George Barris, who had recently acquired it fromParamount Pictures and repainted it again. The VIN numberon the car described it as an experimental 1953 MercuryMonterey and Butts was eventually able to confirm Ford’sname for the car and that it had originally been a Ford conceptcar. In 1995, Butts sold the D-528 to The Guild of AutomotiveRestorers, a group of Canadian investors and the car is nowlocated in Ontario, Canada. After they bought the D-528,the Guild had trouble finding a carburetor with a low enoughrise to allow the hood to close. The D-528 now has a suitablecarburetor and is operable again — and the hood closes. The D-528 has most recently been shown at the 1997Meadowbrook Concours.Vol. 46 Issue #04 APRIL 2005 — Sidemount Reporter 7

FILL ‘ER UP WITH HUMOUREverything Works PrankGet inside their car and turn all the controls to the on positionin the car. The wipers, the radio, the signal, parking brake, adjust the mirrors, move the seat all the way to the front orback, turn on the vents (Point them all at the drivers seat onhigh). Not an evil prank but it will certainly wake them up in themorning. For bonus points set all the preset dials on the radiostation to their least favorite station.APRIL FOOLS PRANKS & PRACTICAL JOKES FOR CARSUse these pranks on April Fools or any other day of the yearyou are inspired to be a little naughty. Remember the secret toa good April Fools Pranks is to look innocent and try to havean alibi. Never pull an April Fools Prank that you couldn’t handleif it was played on you.Hide the Car PrankIf you can move somebody’s car and put it in a different spotfrom where they originally left it you can cause a great amountof panic. You may need extra keys or a floor jack to achievethis one. Try a different floor of the parking garage or move itover a few feet. This confuses the owner and makes them thinkthey have lost their mind. Best to use this one on April Fools sothat at least you have a reason for the target to lose their mindFlat Tire PrankTake some regular balloons and fill them up. Place under thetires so that when the car moves they think they have a majorproblem. Works best at night. Try to keep them out of site.Smoke PrankPour a little vegetable oil on the on the muffler. You may needto crawl underneath the car and use a rag. Huge amounts ofsmoke will come off the car and cause a very concerned driver. It will smell like a giant French fry. This one is not for the faint ofheart and is a huge minus in the environmental department. The Confetti PrankFill the defroster vents of someone’s car with confetti. Be verycareful not to spill any so they have no idea what is coming.Put the defroster on full so when they get in the car and turn iton the confetti goes everywhere. A good vacuuming will clearit up.AROUND THE CLUB...BY BRYNE MCKAYPresident Otto So presenting “The Most WrenchingStory” award to Bryan Thomson at the March 13thGeneral Meeting.Last summer at the start of our tour to the HeadinglyCommunity Centre the coil on his 1938 Ford failed bythe sewage plant on north main. INSIDE STORYWHEELER DEALERBY DAVID SANDERSON(Editor’s Note: this article was written by David Sandersonand appeared in the Winnipeg Free Press December 4, 2004.)When it comes to classic cars, Richard Smith has a real driveto collect and on his farm he had some cars, e-i-e-i-o…As a boy, Richard Smith went directly from training wheelsto kicking tires.“When I was seven or eight, I’d ride my bike to where peoplewere bringing their old cars to be converted into scrap for thewar effort. They’d be piled 20 feet high and I’d think to myself,‘Boy, what I’d do for just one.’”Smith’s father proved a poor sounding board.“At the time, he really discouraged me from getting my own. Iguess I couldn’t blame him – I mean, you don’t really need acar when you’re eight years old.“By the time I turned 14, though, I was already driving mydad’s half-ton all over the place. It was just standard back them,’says the 70-year –old Smith, speaking as much to his ruralupbringing as to the truck’s transmission. “I finally got mylicence in 1950 when I turned 16. One morning, after droppingmy father off at work, I drove down to Motor Vehicles departmentto take my road test.”Smith bought his first set of wheels – a 1927 Ford Model T –soon thereafter. A neighbour who’d been using it to sell farmfresheggs letSmith have it for the non_princely sum of $35. Quite the bargainwhen one considers the car still had that new-egg smell.Smith hasn’t looked in the rear-view mirror since. In additionto an assortment of GMCs and Chevrolets – some of whichdate back to 1936 – Smith currently has seven Ford Model Ts.He’ll never be confused with Speedy the Muffler King – Smithis still plugging away at a 1917 Roadster he purchased back in1965.“Everything I do is how not to do it. I’m always working ontoo many at the same time,” he says during a stroll about hisproperty. One gets the distinct feeling of having just stumbledupon a vehicular version of an elephants’ graveyard, the fieldlittered as it is with the remnants of chassis bought and strippedfor parts over the last half-century.While Smith is an active member of the Manitoba Classicand Antique Auto Club, his automobiles may want to enlistwith the Actor’s Guild. Smith rattles off a half-dozen films –Guy Maddin’s The Saddest Music in the World among them –in which his four-wheeled friends have starred.Smith suffered a stroke a few years back, which cost himhis licence. For a person who’d been driving since whatseemed like the invention of the wheel, it was a particularlyharsh blow.“It can get very frustrating having to ask my wife or friendsto drive me around,” he says.Smith fully plans to be front and centre, mind you, whenthose cars he’s invested a life-time in are finally ready to roll. After all, in addition to blood and guts, he’s also poured a smallfortune into his hobby.“It can get expensive, but the thing with cars is you tend torun out o time before you run out of money.”Anyone interested in car collecting can contact the ManitobaClassic and Antique Auto Club at www.mcaac.mb.caVol. 46 Issue #04 APRIL 2005 — Sidemount Reporter 11
