The college work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> partnership with<br />

Accr<strong>in</strong>gton Prospects Foundation,<br />

Hyndburn’s community environmental<br />

charity has received fund<strong>in</strong>g from the Waste<br />

Action Grant through Global Renewables,<br />

Lancashire Operations Limited to construct a<br />

unit that would house the college composter.<br />

Accr<strong>in</strong>gton & Rossendale College reduces its<br />

food waste to landfill<br />

The Rocket composter loaned to the college<br />

by Church Prospects Panel has enabled the<br />

college to reduce its over<strong>all</strong> food waste from its<br />

Refectory’s on campus to landfill by 100% and at<br />

the same time provid<strong>in</strong>g compost for the college<br />

grounds.<br />

Compost<strong>in</strong>g is the natural process of<br />

decomposition and recycl<strong>in</strong>g of organic material<br />

<strong>in</strong>to a humus rich soil known as compost.<br />

Compost<strong>in</strong>g benefits the environment <strong>in</strong> many<br />

ways. When you compost your food scraps, you<br />

produce a nutrient rich soil, it is also an effective<br />

way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.<br />

Many people believe that throw<strong>in</strong>g food scraps<br />

<strong>in</strong>to landfill is harmless because the materials<br />

biodegrade. Ho<strong>we</strong>ver, most people are surprised<br />

to learn that when these materials break <strong>do</strong>wn <strong>in</strong><br />

a landfill they rot anaerobic<strong>all</strong>y (without oxygen)<br />

and become po<strong>we</strong>rful contributors to greenhouse<br />

gas emissions.<br />

As <strong>we</strong>ll as convert<strong>in</strong>g food waste to a green use<br />

through the compost system, the reduction of<br />

waste sent to landfill due to onsite compost<strong>in</strong>g<br />

reduces transportation costs and landfill<br />

charges. Compost<strong>in</strong>g is the natural process of<br />
