FOREWORD.<br />
This report is <strong>the</strong> result <strong>of</strong> co-operation between <strong>the</strong> Department<br />
<strong>of</strong> Conservation and Development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>New</strong><br />
Jersey and <strong>the</strong> United <strong>State</strong>s Geological Survey, Wash<strong>in</strong>gton,<br />
D.C. The expense <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestigation was divided as equally<br />
as possible between <strong>the</strong> two orgafflzations. The report has been<br />
pr<strong>in</strong>ted by <strong>the</strong> United <strong>State</strong>s Geological Survey and a small<br />
edition purchased by <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Conservation and Development<br />
from <strong>the</strong> Public Pr<strong>in</strong>ter, Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, for distribution<br />
under its cover as a bullet<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> department.<br />
