_6 POTASH IN THE GREENSANDS OF NEW _ER_EY.<br />

Sou<strong>the</strong>ast <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> area mapped as V<strong>in</strong>centown three additional<br />

bor<strong>in</strong>gs throw light on <strong>the</strong> thickness and character <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> overburden<br />

<strong>in</strong> that district.<br />

A well drilled for Dr. Hilt-reel at Sandy Ridge farm (locality 9),<br />

about 1 mile N. 42 ° W. <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Qu<strong>in</strong>ton railroad station, shows,<br />

accord<strong>in</strong>g to C. C. HolIaday, driller, 36 feet <strong>of</strong> overburden and 23<br />

feet <strong>of</strong> "light-colored marl." This marl may be V<strong>in</strong>centown, but it<br />

lies witidn <strong>the</strong> area mapped by <strong>the</strong> <strong>State</strong> Geological Survey asKirkwood<br />

and may represent a marly phass <strong>of</strong> that formation, which<br />

far<strong>the</strong>r sou<strong>the</strong>ast is known as <strong>the</strong> Shiloh marl member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kirkwood<br />

formation, and was formerly dug as a fertilizer. 6<br />

It is supposed that <strong>the</strong> upper bed <strong>of</strong> marl <strong>in</strong> this well may represent<br />

<strong>the</strong> Shiloh marl member and <strong>the</strong> lower bed <strong>the</strong> lime sand<br />

or ¥<strong>in</strong>eentown. Upon this assumption <strong>the</strong> Hornerstown marl at<br />

locality 10 will lle 110 feet or more beneath <strong>the</strong> surface.<br />

The well <strong>of</strong> Jerry Powell, on <strong>the</strong> west bank <strong>of</strong> Hope Creek near its<br />

mouth (Locality 11), "a stone's throw from <strong>the</strong> Delaware," is said<br />

by C. C. Holladay, driller, to be 264 feet deep. The greensand is 40<br />

feet thick and 200 feet below <strong>the</strong> surface. Water is obta<strong>in</strong>ed from<br />

a yellow sand beneath <strong>the</strong> marl. The marl is very compact.<br />

Two wells about 2_ miles east <strong>of</strong> Alloway on <strong>the</strong> road to Daretown<br />

show <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> depth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> marl beds <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> direction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dip.<br />

One well is on <strong>the</strong> farm <strong>of</strong> l_arv<strong>in</strong> Lloyd and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r on <strong>the</strong> farm<br />

owned by Samuel C. Reeve and occupied by Henry Hilo. Both wells<br />

are at an elevation <strong>of</strong> about 40 feet. Woolman _presents <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />
