LMS WELCOMES NEW TEACHERS!
MS. BOWMAN-SWEIGART,
ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL
Lebanon Middle School is happy to welcome our
new assistant principal Mrs. Alissa Bowman-
Sweigart. Mrs. Bowman-Sweigart attended
Cocalico High School, played many sports
growing up, and has been working since the age of
12! Ever since she was in middle school, she
wanted to work for a professional sports team, but
ended up going to Clemson University (located in
South Carolina) where she majored in business
marketing. She worked in advertising for five
years then went back to college for her teaching
degree. She then worked for eight years at
Lebanon High School, teaching business
education, and coached both tennis and
cheerleading. Some of her hobbies include playing
tennis, traveling to warm places, being a die-hard
New York Yankee fan, and going to Yankee games
in NYC! Her talents include, being a good listener,
being fair, and working hard. Some positive things
she sees going on at Lebanon Middle School are
students following directions, smart motivated
kids, and resilient students. Visit the main office to
meet our new assistant principal
LMS Update October 2011
MS. DEROSA, SPEECH
Lebanon Middle School has a new speech
therapist, Ms. DeRosa. This outstanding new
teacher recently
graduated from
Bloomsburg University.
She is from Oldbridge,
New Jersey, and is very
thankful for the
amazing opportunity to
work here. She enjoyed her first day of LMS and
was impressed by the friendly relationships
between students and teachers. When Ms.
DeRosa was younger, she always knew that she
wanted to be involved in education because her
older sister was a speech therapist. If she hadn’t
become a speech therapist, Ms. De Rosa may
have become a science teacher. Outside of school,
she is in a co-ed soccer league. Stop by Team
Room One to welcome Ms. DeRosa to LMS!
MS. POLUMBO, COMPUTERS
Lebanon Middle School has many new teachers,
one of them is Ms. Palumbo, she is a computer
teacher in room 21O. She graduated from Kings
College and then Bloomsburg University for her
Masters Degree. Ms. Polumbo is from Hazelton,
PA, and likes to play sports. One of the sports she
likes to play is soccer, but her favorite is
basketball. One of her favorite hobbies is
photography,
and obviously she loves
technology. That’s one
of the reasons she
became a computer
teacher! Ms. Polumbo
didn’t always want to
be a computer teacher,
she wanted to work in a human resource company.
Outside of school she likes to be with her friends.
Ms. Palumbo is very excited to be a girls’
basketball coach at the high-school this winter!
NEW TEACHERS AT LMS CONT.
MS. GROSS,
COMMUNICATION ARTS
Lebanon Middle School is proud to welcome
Ms. Gross, our new 7 th grade Communication
Arts teacher. She
was a graduate from
Lebanon Valley
College in 2006.
Ms. Gross then
attended Wilkes
University for her
Masters degree in
Educational Development and Strategies. Ms.
Gross has been teaching for five years; before
LMS she taught at Northwest Elementary (4 th
grade), and in Harrisburg city for three years. Ms.
Gross’s goal this year is to make a positive
connection with students that need a mentor and
to also help raise their scores in Reading. In her
free time Ms. Gross likes to spend time with her
two kids, attend the Phillies games, take Zumba
class, travel, and sit by the pool in the summer.
She likes to read fiction and mystery books the
most. Her favorite author is Elin Hildebrand.
When asked if she’s had any good experiences at
Lebanon Middle School she replied with “yes!”
and said she has made connections with students
and is building trust with them. But, her favorite
experience so far was attending the fall pep rally
and listening to Mr. Rau TRY to crack jokes.
Finally, Ms. Gross likes LMS more than all the
others schools she has taught at. She believes that
our school has excellent structure and that
students are respectful. Stop by room 215 to
welcome Ms. Gross to LMS.
LMS Update October 2011
NURSES CORNER
The Pennsylvania Department of Health requires that all children attending school be
adequately immunized. Letters were recently sent out to parents/guardians of students who do
not have documentation of compliance with current requirements. Please provide
immunization dates documented by your health care provider to the school nurse by October
21, 2011 or your child may be excluded from school.
TIPS FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE:
HELP KEEP YOUR CHILD HEALTHY AND FLU-FREE
With flu season upon us, it is important that we work together to keep our children healthy.
Viruses spread easily among children in schools, and families with school-age children have
more infections than others. By keeping our children flu-free, we benefit the community as a
whole. You can help prevent the spread of flu or help your child get better if he/she does get
sick by following a few simple steps:
If possible, you and your child should get a flu shot
Remind your child to cover his/her nose and mouth with a tissue when sneezing or coughing
and dispose of the tissue immediately
Have your child wash his/her hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 20
seconds
Disinfect frequently-touched surfaces and shared items at least once a day
Ensure that bathrooms are stocked with soap, hand towels and tissues
Teach your child not to touch his/her mouth, nose and eyes
If your child is sick and has a fever, keep him/her at home to prevent the spread of illness to
others
If you are concerned about your child’s flu symptoms, call your doctor early. Call your doctor
immediately if your child has a chronic disease. Common symptoms of flu include high
fever, severe headache, muscle and body aches, exhaustion, and dry cough. Additionally,
children often exhibit other flu symptoms that are rare in adults, such as nausea, vomiting and
diarrhea. Some children might benefit from an antiviral medication, which can be prescribed
by a physician and can help lessen duration of the virus and reduce the risk of complications,
such as pneumonia. To be effective, antiviral medication should be taken within 12-48 hours
after flu symptoms begin.
Please contact your child’s physician about obtaining a flu shot.
If you have any questions or would like additional information about preventing and treating
the flu, please contact the school nurse.
