LMS WELCOMES MATH TEACHER,
MR. TOOMEY
Mr. Toomey is one of the new teachers at
LMS. He currently teaches Pre-Algebra with
seventh graders on Team 6. Prior to teaching
at Lebanon Middle School, Mr. Toomey was a
fourth grade teacher in Virginia for three years.
In addition, he also taught a seventh grade
special education class. His inspiration to
become a teacher came from his father. Mr.
Toomey's father taught high school students
for 35 years, and he is delighted to be
following in his father's footsteps. Outside of
school, you can catch Mr. Toomey coaching
and playing sports, such as bowling and
golfing. His favorite television show is "The
Leverage" while he enjoys repeatedly
watching the movie, "Shawshenk
Redemption". Mr. Toomey also enjoys reading
in his spare time. His favorite book is "When
the Game was Just a Game" by Dave Holland.
One quality to admire about Mr. Toomey is
that he has a lot of patience. On a proud note,
he recently became a godfather in October and
is engaged to be married
in the year 2013. Please stop by Mod 4B to
welcome Mr. Toomey to LMS!
Important Safety Alert - Magnetic Fake Piercings
Medical professionals are warning about an increase in serious injuries to children and teens from
BB-sized magnetic balls. They are sold in sets originally marketed as an adult stress release toy.
Teens and younger children have swallowed the silvery magnets while trying to make it look as
though they had tongue or lip piercings, or while attempting to separate the pieces with their teeth
or place them on their braces. Very young children who find loose magnets run the risk of
swallowing or choking on them. If more than one piece is swallowed the powerful magnetic balls
may cause severe intestinal damage.
The American Academy of Pediatrics offers these safety tips:
- Regularly check toys and play areas, including carpeting, for dislodged or lost magnets.
- Warn teens to avoid placing the tiny magnetic balls near their faces, such as to mimic piercings.
- Seek immediate medical attention if you think a child has swallowed a magnet (and don’t
assume it will pass normally). Symptoms include abdominal pains, nausea, vomiting and
diarrhea, all of which can be mistaken for other illnesses.
Reminders
Sixth grade physicals are now due.
Seventh grade dental choice forms are now due.
FIT TIP OF MONTH – NOVEMBER
Three surprise foods that keep your cholesterol and blood sugar in check:
1. Avocados - lower LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and increase your HDL...limit
servings to 2 tablespoons a day. Avocados are also rich in soluble fiber, which help keep
blood sugar levels steady.
2. Pistachios - Eaten in moderation (one serving - 50 nuts) they will boost your heart health
three ways- Reduce LDL, improve HDL and raise blood sugar antioxidant levels. Pistachios
can help prevent post meal blood sugar spikes.
3. Peanut Butter - All natural peanut butter is a great choice for cholesterol watchers: lowers
LDL cholesterol and triglycerides and raise HDL cholesterol. Pistachio’s also help keep blood
sugar stable after eating.
NOVEMBER SAFETY TIP OF THE MONTH – SEAT BELT SAFETY (FLYING ELEPHANT)
While you are traveling over the Thanksgiving holiday, make sure everyone from infants to
grandparents are properly restrained. In a 30 mile per hour crash, an unrestrained adult is thrown with
a force of 3½tons – about the weight of an elephant. Click It or Ticket and avoid taking a flying
elephant along for the ride. Learn more about Pennsylvania’s seat belt laws at www.JustDrivePA.com
LMS Update November 2012
Mathema;cs
During the month of September, teachers spent several weeks establishing rouXnes and
expectaXons for classes. Our math 4-‐sight scores were relaXvely low as usual for the first
assessment. So the teachers of Powermath and core-‐math classes are going to be
proacXve in reinforcing basics by modeling more esXmaXon to determine “reasonable
answers” as well as modeling how to connect content from school with their everyday life.
(For example, teaching students to connect decimal operaXons with money operaXons.)
The environment in our building this year is very posiXve with students recognizing that we
are not where we need to be, and that it will take hard work and dedicaXon to improving
their math skills. With that being said, we are asking that parents also help out with
making the math connecXons from school to home. We are looking forward to the
students conXnuing to work hard and reach our goals!
Communica;on Arts
LMS CommunicaXon Arts classes are well under way in advancing wriXng and literacy skills.
Sixth grade classes are wrapping up their ficXon unit with a compare/contrast wriXng piece
using the Literacy Design CollaboraXve format. Seventh graders are focusing on
propaganda techniques and the influence of persuasion in adverXsements, while also
implemenXng these techniques in their own wriXng pieces.
Eighth grade classes are
conXnuing their ficXon unit with a focus on authors such as O. Henry and Edgar Allan Poe
and will finish this unit with a persuasive wriXng piece using the LDC module format. We
look forward to parent-‐teacher conferences to discuss your child’s CommunicaXon Arts
progress!
Social Studies
It is shocking to think we are one-‐quarter of the way through the school year! The Social
Studies department is conXnuing their voyage through Xme and along the way creaXng
some incredible projects and essays. 6th grade students are making their way through
Ancient Egypt while the 7th graders are beginning the French and Indian War. The 8th
graders are discussing the IndustrializaXon period in American history. Does all of this
sound like fun or what?

Physical Educa;on
Physical EducaXon students in 6th and 7th grade have been parXcipaXng in the following
fall sports: flag football, soccer, field hockey and tennis. The students hope to conXnue
going outside as long as possible, please remember that students may wear sweatpants
and/or a sweatshirt over top of your physical educaXon clothing, which includes a t-‐shirt
and shorts. Students must change into their physical educaXon clothing in the locker
rooms provided. 8th grade students have completed their health classes on relaXonships
and will need their gym clothing for Gym in order to parXcipate in fall sports acXviXes.
Art
The Lebanon Middle School Art Department started off the school year with projects
that focused on the elements and principles of art. Miss Kerwin’s students used the
elements and principles to represent their hobbies in a variety of ways. The 6 th
graders illustrated their first names, the 7 th graders created radial designs, and the 8 th
graders drew illuminated lejers. Mrs. Templin’s 6 th graders created circular designs,
the 7 th graders drew their hands and incorporated designs and the 8 th grade students
made observaXonal drawings of potato chip bags and snack wrappers. It’s been a
great start to the school year!
-‐Miss Kerwin and Mrs. Templin
