Canadian Vocalists Elizabeth Shepherd Elizabeth Shepherd is a fresh, distinctive, jazz voice and one of Canada’s most promising jazz talents, and she has the widespread critical acclaim to prove it. Shepherd’s debut Start to Move (2006) and the follow-up Parkdale (2008) were both nominated for JUNOs and were described as “pushing the boundaries of jazz.” Elizabeth brings her trio to the <strong>Yardbird</strong> as part of an extensive tour, with several Canadian stops. Expect this show to feature past works and fresh music from her well-received third album Heavy Falls the Night. Elizabeth’s rhythmically intricate, grooveoriented tunes, sincere lyrics and distinct, soulful voice have earned her fans from across Canada, and as far as New York, London and Tokyo. Elizabeth’s bio states: “… she pushes the boundaries of what is considered conventional jazz, all the while creating a sound completely her own. As far as being a ‘jazz performer,’ Elizabeth does not count herself as one to be defined by a particular genre; her music comes straight from the soul, and is more than just what she does, but what she loves.” Elizabeth completed a degree in music from McGill University before moving to Toronto and experiencing success on Toronto’s soul jazz scene with her trio. Their local success led to the recording of Start to Move, and a subsequent performance on BBC Radio 1, sold out shows at London’s Jazz Café, and a week-long stint at the prestigious Cotton Club in Tokyo. Start To Move continues to receive critical acclaim, and was voted one of the Top 3 Jazz Albums of the Year by the listeners of the Gilles Peterson show on BBC Radio 1 UK in 2006. when... International Jazz Series Tunnel Six Tunnel Six is a sextet comprised of some of the most notable up-and-coming jazz musicians from the U.S. Pacific Northwest and from Eastern Canada. The group was formed when its members were attending the International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music at the Banff Centre for the Arts. As noted on the band’s website, the group says there was a “strong musical chemistry” which was immediately evident from the first notes they played together. Tunnel Six plays original compositions by all the band members and hope to connect to their audiences “through the strong and intuitive storytelling elements of their improvisations.” They are currently on an extensive tour of Canada, the mid-west U.S., and the Pacific Northwest, which will culminate in the recording of their debut full-length album in Portland, Oregon. when...
