Joey is a well-recognized as an important force
in the revival of the Hammond B-3 organ as a
jazz instrument. According to Steve Huey of
allmusic.com, his music “runs the gamut from
soul-jazz and bluesy grooves à la Jimmy Smith
to hard bop to the more advanced modal style
of Coltrane disciple Larry Young.”
Considered by many to be the greatest jazz
organist on the planet, DeFrancesco has
topped the organist category in both the
Downbeat Critics’ and Readers’ Polls for many
years.
Following in the footsteps of his father, Papa
John DeFrancesco, Joey’s career started in his
teenage years as a finalist in the Thelonious
Monk International Jazz Piano Competition
followed by touring with Miles Davis’ band
after his high-school graduation in 1988. He
also spent some time working with guitarist
John McLaughlin in the 1990s.

He has recorded steadily since 1989 on a
variety of labels as a leader including a couple
of CDs with the late Jimmy Smith as well as
tributes to other great organists like Don
Patterson. His most recent disc is a tribute to
the music of Horace Silver.
For this special weekend gig at the Yardbird
Suite, Joey is bringing his long-time colleagues,
guitarist Paul Bollenback and drummer Byron
