What is bioplastics market?
Bioplastics is a collective term of “biodegradable plastics” that can eventually decompose
itself into water and carbon dioxide, and “biomass plastics” that is derived from renewable
organic resources including plants. Bioplastics market in this research indicates the market
targeting these above-mentioned environment-conscious plastics.

• Size of Bioplastics Market in FY2010 Expanded Remarkably by 93.5% to Reach
32,880 Tons
Size of bioplastics market in FY2010 based on shipment volume of manufacturers expanded
by 93.5%, almost twice the size of the previous year, due to adoption of bio PET by a
number of leading beverage manufacturers.
• Size of Bioplastics Market Temporarily Declines in FY2011 by 18.0% on Y-o-Y Bases
to 26,960 Tons, and Recovers in FY2012 to 34,040 tons, Increase by 26.3% on Y-o-Y
Bases
Bioplastics market in FY2011 marked negative growth because of rebound effect from
dramatic growth of the previous year. Stricter cost reduction minds triggered by the Great
East Japan Earthquake in user companies may have no small effect on this negative growth.
However, the decline seems to be temporary because there are increasing cases of switching
traditional plastics made from petroleum to bio-PET, BIO-PE and other bioplastics.
Therefore, size of bioplastics market for FY2012 is estimated as 34,040 tons, up by 26.3%
from the previous year.
