The research targets <strong>in</strong> this study are <strong>Japan</strong>ese sweets, Western sweets, desserts (<strong>in</strong>cl. pudd<strong>in</strong>g, jelly,<br />

chilled desserts, yogurt), ice cream <strong>and</strong> frozen sweets.<br />

The market size of no-<strong>bake</strong> sweets <strong>and</strong> desserts <strong>in</strong> fiscal 2009 decl<strong>in</strong>ed by 1.2 percent from the<br />

previous year to 1,766.3 billion yen based on manufacturer shipment value. The market had been <strong>in</strong> an<br />

<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g trend s<strong>in</strong>ce fiscal 2004, however, it turned to decrease for the first time <strong>in</strong> five years. Due to<br />

prolonged recession consumer tendency to save is grow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> it is affect<strong>in</strong>g confectionery, which are<br />

nonessential foods.<br />

♦ CVSs are attract<strong>in</strong>g customers with orig<strong>in</strong>al exquisite sweets.<br />

One of the measures of convenience stores or CVSs to differentiate from others <strong>and</strong> to <strong>in</strong>crease the<br />

number of visits <strong>and</strong> per customer price is to re<strong>in</strong>force their orig<strong>in</strong>al sweets. Traditionally the dem<strong>and</strong>s<br />

were high from male customers. By offer<strong>in</strong>g high quality merch<strong>and</strong>ise with reasonable price range<br />

CVSs are try<strong>in</strong>g to take <strong>in</strong> young female customers. The results of consumer survey <strong>in</strong> this research<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicate that the purchases by women are <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
