Shri. M.V. Rajasekharan
Former Union Minister of
State & MLC, Karnataka
Shri M.V. Rajasekharan was born on 12th September 1928
in Maralwadi village in Kanakapura Taluk, Karnataka. He
earned his B.A. Degree from Mysore University and has been
educated at Faculty of Law - University of Delhi, University
of Missouri and Kansas State University of Agriculture and
Applied Sciences, U.S.A.
He entered politics during India’s Independent struggle, and
is one of veterans in Indian National Congress having served
in the party for over five decades. He was part of Student
Congress members to visit Madras in 1947 to see Mahatma
Gandhi. He was also part of organizing ‘Mysore Chalo’
demanding the merger of Mysore State with Indian Union.
As a Convener of Mysore Pradesh Youth Congress during
1956-69, he was largely responsible for initiating steps to
have a separate Ministry for Youth Affairs in Government of
Karnataka. During his political career he has been active in
almost every segment of society from youth activist, labour
and farmers activist, to a parliamentary politician. The 84-
year old leader has made valuable impact on national and
state political scene. He has been a Member of Lok Sabha,
MLA in Karnataka State Assembly, a Member of Karnataka
Legislative Council and Member of Rajya Sabha, as well as
the Minister of State for Planning, Government of India.
In spite of being in politics all his life he prefers to
call himself an agriculturist and his profession as the
promotion of Rural Development Programmes. He is also
professionally trained in whole range of agriculture related
body of knowledge including Balanced Farming, Agricultural
Extension, Cooperatives, Buying, Selling & Credit, Technical
Training in Education, Health & Extension Services. As
Minister of State for Planning, his contributions to planning
process are still remembered as landmarks in terms of
promoting the rural sector, putting Gandhian values in
practice.
He has been a member of Consultative Committee for
Ministry of Food & Agriculture, Indian Council for
Agricultural Research (ICAR), and Board of Regents,
University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore. As an
agriculturist, he has been associated with many NGOs working
in Rural Development. He has guided and monitored rural
development projects in sericulture development, small and
marginal farmers and landless agricultural labourers, and
organised and coordinated many national and international
seminars, workshops, conferences on development with a focus
on rural development and training programmes in human
resource development connected with rural development.
He is also Editor of ‘AIRD News’ – an monthly magazine
circulated among NGOs around the world. In July 2000,
the National NGO Council of Sri Lanka awarded him
with ‘Vishvashara’, which is constituted for outstanding
personalities in Social Development.
Sri M.V. Rajasekaran is the honourable member of Board of
Management, JSS University and is closely associated with
Rural Development and Healthcare programmes initiated by
Suttur Math and JSS University.
JSS University is honoured to have such a senior member as
adviser and well wisher and his guidance are inspirational to
all its endeavors.
