The cod gillnet mesh size had an decisive impact on <strong>the</strong> length <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fish it caught. This<br />
is well illustrated by <strong>the</strong> data in <strong>the</strong> Table 4. In order to present this relation even more distinctly,<br />
<strong>the</strong> plot in Figure 3 presents <strong>the</strong> dependence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> average length <strong>of</strong> cod specimens<br />
caught in gillnets <strong>of</strong> particular mesh sizes. These data reveal that during <strong>the</strong> experiments and<br />
depending on <strong>the</strong> mesh size used, <strong>the</strong> average cod length varied from 41 cm (in mesh size<br />
45 mm ) to 52-53 cm (in mesh size 65 mm).<br />
This relationship is more precisely presented by <strong>the</strong> data in Table 5, where <strong>the</strong> differences<br />
in lengths <strong>of</strong> cod specimens caught are recalculated to <strong>the</strong> standard mesh size. These data<br />
reveal that every mesh size catches cod specimens <strong>of</strong> a specific length. The differences in <strong>the</strong><br />
average lengths <strong>of</strong> cod specimens caught using a given mesh size were relatively small (about<br />
2%) in <strong>the</strong> different experiments. These data also revealed a certain tendency towards changes<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> length <strong>of</strong> fish caught as gillnets are used in subsequent seasons. The length <strong>of</strong> fish caught<br />
gradually decreased most <strong>of</strong>ten by about 1 cm after one fishing season. The data in Table 5<br />
reveal one more significant relation; an increase <strong>of</strong> mesh size by 5 mm resulted in <strong>the</strong> increase<br />
<strong>of</strong> average cod length by about 2.5 cm when mesh size is increased from 45 and 50 mm, by<br />
3.0 cm when increasing from 50 to 60 mm, and by 3.5 cm from 60 to 65 mm. This dependence<br />
is presented as follows:<br />
