The material obtained was analyzed according to well-known and recognized biological<br />
methods (Kiselev 1969, Anon. 1974, Lange and Dmitrieva 1981).<br />
The larva density is expressed as individuals per m 3 .<br />
At <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> May and at <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> June <strong>of</strong> 1997-1999, simultaneously with <strong>the</strong><br />
sampling <strong>of</strong> smelt larvae, samples <strong>of</strong> zooplankton were taken using an Apstein net. All <strong>the</strong><br />
samples were collected in <strong>the</strong> upper 1-meter layer. The volume <strong>of</strong> filtered water was 31.4 liter.<br />
In all, 28 samples were obtained. Zooplankton was identified to <strong>the</strong> species level using standard<br />
references (Kutikova 1970, Manuilova 1964, Dussart 1967, 1969, Smirnov 1971). Biomass<br />
was assessed on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> body weight and length relationship (Balushkina and Winberg<br />
1979).
