I hope, as you read this, you are 

reflecting on the wonderful things 

you have seen and heard at our 

Education Week Open Day, today. 

I am so proud of all our students 

and school staff! Their creativity, 

their enthusiasm for school and 

their passion for learning is evident. 

The beautiful voices of the choir always 

give me goose bumps! The 

newly formed school ‘band’ is a 

great example of students being 

pro-active. Their vision and desire 

to ‘perform’ was all self-motivated. 

Did you see the amazing canvas 

art that was produced by all 

classes? WOW! Again, a fantastic 

example of students and teachers 

working together to produce little 

‘gems’ that define who we are 

and what we do at Old Bar School. 

This year, special awards were 

presented to staff and community 

members for their unique contributions 

to Old Bar School. Diane 

Evenden is the ‘face’ of Old Bar. 

She’s the friendly voice and the 

smiling face who greets parents, 

students, staff and visitors to our 

school. Nothing is ever too much 

trouble for Di and, as the First Aid 

Officer; she is always compassionate 

and caring towards sick or injured 

students. Thank you Diane 

for all the seen and unseen helpful 

deeds you do for so many each day. 

Linda Castro – or Aunty Linda as 

she is commonly known – is another 

unassuming, hardworking, 

compassionate staff member. Linda 

is employed in our school as an 

Aboriginal Education Officer. She 

provides tutorial support to students 

always has a helping hand 

for teaching staff and is a valuable 

connection to our wider school community. 

Linda is passionate about 

ensuring Aboriginal culture, and in 

particular the local Gathung language 

is preserved in the community. 

She is a pastoral carer, a friend, 

a tutor, a role model and a proud 

advocate for Aboriginal people. We 

thank you Aunty Linda and congratulate 

you on this special award. 

Kim Moses has been involved in 

the Old Bar P&C Association for 

20 years! She currently holds the 

position of President but has assumed 

many official and unofficial 

roles throughout her long and 

proud association with Old Bar 

School. Kim is a ‘doer!’ She’s the 

busy person you get to do the job, 

knowing it will not only get done, it

will be done quickly and the result 

will be perfect. She too is passionate 

about Old Bar School and has 

fought many a fight to ensure that 

our students are provided with the 

best possible resources both in and 

out of the classroom. Kim is a conduit 

between myself and the wider 

community. She’s the ears and 

eyes that I rely on to provide me 

with feedback from our parents and 

friends. Kim is deserving of both 

awards she has received today. 

One from the staff and students to 

acknowledge her commitment to the 

school and the other, as Life Member 

of the P&C Association, from 

her peers both past and present. 

Here at Old Bar, we are fortunate 

to have a wonderful mix of staff 

who bring both youth and experience 

to our school. As some of us 

edge closer to retirement, some are 

just beginning on their career path. 

Ashlie Biega has been with us now 

for 18 months. She has taught all 

grades in the school and has recently 

completed the rigorous Accreditation 

process. We congratulate 

Ashlie on being awarded her 

Teaching Certificate and wish her 

well in her future teaching career. 

Bronwyn Sheridan is no stranger 

to awards! Her commitment 

to teaching, her love of education 

and her devotion to her students 

is legendary. Parents have 

nominated Bronwyn for a National 

Excellence in Teaching Award. 

Congratulations Bronwyn and 

THANK YOU for your continued 

outstanding teaching performance. 

I could add many more names to 

the list of deserving recipients of 

awards to recognise Education 

Week. We are blessed beyond 

measure here at Old Bar Public 

School to have more than our 

fair share of wonderful, dedicated 

teachers. On a personal note, I 

would like to acknowledge ALL staff 

and thank them for their hard work 

and support always. What a team!

Next week I’m off to two professional 

learning events, back to 

back! On Monday I fly to Melbourne 

with 8 other local principals to further 

investigate the effective use of 

technology in 21st century classrooms. 

We attend lectures and visit 

a school where “Self Organised 

Learning Environments” are being 

implemented. I’m pretty excited 

about learning more. I’m then off 

to Coffs Harbour to join with 200 

principals for the annual Principal’s 

Conference. Again, guest speakers 

with an emphasis on 21st century 

learning and innovative teaching 

practice has me excited! My 

head will be spinning by the time 

I return to school. In my absence, 

the exceptional executive staff will 

be ‘holding the fort.’ I’ll have lots 

of news to share upon my return.

Bus News 

I was chatting with Noel this morning 

and he indicated that the 1st 

bus on the afternoon run was indeed 

becoming very crowded. In 

some days there are in excess 

of 90 students on that bus! To alleviate 

the problem, he is going to 

drop students who live in Wyden 

and Clerke Streets from the SEC- 

OND bus from Monday. Children 

who live in these areas will now 

have to wait at school for the second 

bus which leaves at around 

3.40pm from school. Noel assures 

me he has already told most families 

involved. Please check with 

Noel if you have any concerns.

Watch This Space! 

The School Musical Production will 

be held during week 10 this term. 

Due to the increasing school enrolments 

and limited seating available 

at the Manning Entertainment Centre, 

the productions will be held on 

two evenings: Years K-2(including 

yr 3 students in 2/3H) - Monday 

16th September, and Years 3-6 

- Tuesday 17th September. The 

cost of each ticket will be $17 and 

all families with students enrolled 

at OBPS will be allocated 3 tickets 

per family per performance and 

will only be held for a period of 

2 weeks. Tickets will be available 

from 19th August to 2nd September. 

After this date any tickets that 

remain unsold will be available for 

general purchase. Tickets will be 

availble from Video Ezy, Taree. No 

tickets will be sold at the school. 

Premiers Spelling Bee 

Congratulations to all students 

who participatesd in the Junior 

Section of the Old Bar School Finals 

of the School Spelling Bee. 

A special congratulations to Hayden 

Delaney (year 4) and Jorja Collings 

(year 3) who will represent 

our school at the Regional Spelling 

Bee Finals here at Old Bar 

on Thursday 19th September. 

All finalists will receive a certificate 

of appreciation next week.

Kodaly Recorder 

Program 

The Kodaly recorder program and 

lessons with Mrs Jane Porst will 

continue this term and into term 4 

for all students in 2/3H, 3/4G, 3/4S, 

3/4D and 4/5T. The cost of the program 

is $20 or payments of $5 per 

fortnight can be made. Notes have 

been given to students in these 

classes. If you need another one 

please see your child’s teacher. 

So your child doesn’t miss out on 

these lessons, payment and notes 

are due in by Wednesday 14th August. 

Student assistance funding is 

available if you are having difficulty

Debating Team 

The Lower North Coast Debating 

competition is in full swing, and 

our school debating team heads 

into the third round undefeated. 

The team consists of Alex Slade, 

Michael Ling, Madison McKenzie- 

Smith, Chloe Delaney, Chloe Sherlock 

and Mia Lyons. We travelled 

to Hallidays Point PS for round one 

last term, where we successfully argued 

that ‘Technology is not ruining 

our social lives.’ Last week we travelled 

to Chatham PS for round two. 

The topic was ‘That fast food stores 

do more harm than good,’ and we 

were the negative side. Our team 

produced a convincing display, 

and again came away with a win. 

Our round three debate will be 

against Tuncurry PS, and will be held 

at Old Bar. The topic is ‘That Homework 

should be banned,’ and we will 

be arguing for the affirmative case. 

Good luck debaters and special 

thanks to the parents who have provided 

transport for our last two rounds. 

Fashion Show 

Fundraiser/Dinner 

A Fashion Show-Fundraiser/Dinner 

will be held in the School Hall 

on Sat 24th Aug at 7pm. The P & C 

will be catering for the dinner and 

three local Old Bar businesses will 

be showcased on the night. Some 

parents may recall the fantastic effort 

made by the children in 2011 

to fundraise for a classroom building 

for parentless children in Suubi 

village Uganda. This fundraiser is 

for a similar project. Humanitarian 

Projects International (HPI) is 

sending a team to Tzaneen, South 





Africa, next April to build a Day Care 

Centre for children left to fend for 

themselves after the death of their 

parents. So this time we are asking 

you, the parents, to help make this 

dream a reality for these children. 

The night will feature fashions by 

“Bird Tree”- women’s fashions, and 

“Granny’s Threads” - handmade 

vintage children’s clothing. Our 

new Old Bar jewellers, Bill & Georgie 

from Murlocs, will also be giving 

a presentation on the care of your 

jewellery as well as being on hand 

to evaluate any special pieces, antique 

or modern, that you would 

like to bring along. You can pick up 

a bargain in the Silent Auction and 

we will raffle a beautiful handmade 

porcelain doll as well. So come on 

girls and make up a table of 8. Help 

us to build that Day Care Centre 

while supporting local businesses 

and the hard working school P & 

C. Tickets are $30 and are available
