Spring break is coming
and so are the scammers.
If you get a call supposedly
from your grandchild
telling you that he
or she is in financial trouble
or has been arrested
and that you need to wire
money immediately, this
is likely a scam! Be particularly
cautious if the
person tells you to keep
the phone call a secret.
Ask a personal question
only your grandchild
would be able to answer
correctly.
Be a fraud fighter! If
you can spot a scam, you
can stop a scam.
They’re Out To Get You!
Yes, unfortunately, it’s true. Scam
artists, thieves, frauds…whatever you
want to call them, they’re out to get us
at every turn.
There was a recent news item about the
scammers who billed a compounded
skin cream to Medicare for over
$13,000! I got a phone message just
the other day that said that the sheriff’s

less than an hour to arrest me for – who
knows what…but if I just called them,
they’d make it all better. I’m sure there
was a hefty price tag attached to it. I
just deleted it. (and no sheriff arrived!)
Your phone is your best friend, because
it keeps you connected to your friends
and family. But it’s also your worst
enemy, because those bad guys use it
to get your information or money. The
answer to all people who call you that
you don’t know is NO. Hang up. Don’t
answer when they call again. Use your
voice mail as a screening tool. Don’t
tell them anything – not your address,
what year you graduated from high
school, your husband’s date of birth,
how long you’ve lived in your home…
nothing. Nothing. Hang up.
Check your Medicare statements. If
you were to see a skin cream for pain
that was billed to Medicare for $13,000,
that you didn’t order, what would you
do? You SHOULD immediately call

then because it would be obviously
a fraud, you would also call us, your
local Area Agency on Aging’s Senior
Medicare Patrol. You could also call

Protect yourself. Become a bit more
suspicious than you’d like to be!
Become a little rude! Beat them at
their many games.
