Metal roofing was chosen to provide maximum protection and lowest maintenance needs until the Western Foothills Land Trust is prepared to begin rehabilitating the 1823 timber framed structure. It sounded exciting to me even though I didn’t know exactly what it would involve. Local business owners thought the changes would lead to a Golden Age in our town. Old-timers began to think that the world was coming unglued at the seams. You understood upfront that anything you or the other party said on the phone could and would be overheard by Thelma Ames. That kind of eavesdropping may seem like an “invasion of privacy” in our hypersensitive age, but it didn’t bother us much and sometimes came in handy. In this age of iPhones, emails, texts, tweets and twitters, I’m still not back to the kind of friendly, personal service I used to get from Thelma Ames. I like to think that my public speaking career began with those party line calls of years ago. And even though I have gone on to speak to larger audiences in person and on the radio, I can only hope that my audiences today listen as often and as intently as my neighbors back home on that party line. More and more I agree with those who say, “not all change is for the best.• Western Maine Health Announce Board Appointments David Preble, Chairman, announced the appointment of H. Sawin Millett, Jr. and Holly Bancroft Brown as Trustees of the Western Maine Health, Stephens Memorial Hospital and Western Maine Multi Medical Specialist Boards. Millett, a native of Waterford, Maine, received a B.S. degree from Bates College in Lewiston and a Masters Degree in Education Administration from the University of Maine. His professional achievements include teaching and executive leadership positions including Commissioner of Education. Millett has enjoyed a distinguished career in public service. Key highlights include; Director of Legislative Operations under Governor McKernan, Senior Policy Advisor for Governor King, and two terms as Commissioner of Finance/Administrative and Financial Services for the State of Maine. Brown has served on the Stephens Community Healthcare Foundation since 2009 and is a past board member of Western Maine Multi Medical Specialists. She carries the tradition as the second generation of her family as a trustee of the Western Maine Health boards. She attended Montana State University and has been a local real estate broker since 2009, currently with The Maine Real Estate Network. In addition to service on Western Maine Health affiliate boards, Brown has served as a member of the Paris Planning Board, Maine Adaptive Sports and Recreation and the Gould Academy Board of Trustees.
