Welcome
As you may be aware that Institute of
Apparel Management (IAM) under the
aegis of Apparel Export Promotion Council
(AEPC) sponsored by Ministry of Textiles, Govt.
of India has been set-up with an objective to
train industry ready professional to cater to the
growing skilled manpower needs of Apparel &
Textile Industry.
IAM trains junior and middle level design
and managerial cadre for “Business of Fashion”,
by creating a distinctive position, while
other institutions are more oriented towards
imparting only degree/diploma in vocation. IAM
through its ultra-modern facilities like Fashion
Innovation Lab (FIL) has been instrumental
in training “GenNext” Design Managers,
Digital Merchandisers, Apparel Technocrats
Retail professionals with knowledge of latest
technology.
Year 2013-14, has been significant for
Institute of Apparel Management, it has been
awarded “National Education Leadership
Award by ABP News besides being ranked No.1
amongst top public design institutes by “Career
360 Degree” Magazine and also has been ranked
amongst top 10 fashion institutes nationally
and top-3 in Delhi NCR by “Education World”
Magazine during the year. IAM is the only
institute which has achieved such a feat in less
than 5- years compared to its peers with over
20-25 years history.
IAM students’ contributions in INDIGO 2013,
‘Kritika’ as well as winning titles like Femina
Miss India (North) by Ms. Aditi Bhalhotra and
Ms. Saniya Babu’s work on Styling celebrity
Bina Ramani have received media attention in
International Magazines “Libas International”.
Students of IAM have also become budding
entrepreneurs by launching new brands with huge
differential like ‘MAE’ and ‘HAR-YARN-V’ which
again have received wide spread media attention.
IAM alumni / students are working with leading
brands like GUCCI and ARMANI, ITC and
several others.
beginning by
IAM students
COVER:
From the Stylista Fashion Show
organised by IAM students at
Apparel House Campus.
The young students of The Institute of
Apparel Management (IAM) presented its
annual runway exhibition Aarambh, created
and produced by students from the Apparel
Design & Merchandising Department.
Mr. Samant Chauhan (Fashion Designer) &
Mr. Aparshakti Khurana (RJ) were the special
guests on the occasion. The runway exhibition
carried every aspect of the production – from
lighting and set design, to marketing and
promotion, guest services, public relations
and of course, the runway collections – which
have been created from concept to execution
by students at the college.
Ms. Zohra Chatterji,
Secretary,
Ministry of Textiles,
Govt. of India.
The Ministry of Textiles, Government of
India (MOT, GOI) has been taking timely
steps over the years to support development
of trained human resources for the entire
textile value chain whether it be the setting
up Institutes of Handloom Technology in the
earlier years or setting up of Weavers’ Service
Centers or the TRAs and Sardar Vallabhai
Patel Institute for textile related research
and management programmes or in recent
times Centres of Excellence for Technical
Textiles etc. Even for associated institutions
MOT extends necessary support. ATDC is
an excellent example being a Nodal Agency
under Component-1 for strengthening the
vocational training system in the country.
When NIFT was set up almost 3 decades ago,
the word fashion itself was rather unknown
in India. Getting inspired by the Fashion
Institute of Technology (FIT), New York and
placing a group of talented professionals to
be trained in FIT to form the core faculty
for NIFT, Delhi, the fashion revolution was
unleashed in the country. The pioneering
team of NIFT’s Founding Faculty members
including Dr. Darlie Koshy now here at IAM
and several others had helped in developing
NIFT as a ‘benchmark’ for Fashion Design
Education in the last quarter of a century.
Major changes have taken place since the
setting up of NIFT in 1986, as the setting up
of NIFT was prior to economic liberalization
which began in 1991. Post 2005, quotas or
quantitative restrictions in apparel exports
have been done away with and it has become
‘free trade’ for apparel requiring new
competitiveness dimensions of ‘speed’ and
‘scale’. Post 2005, Indian apparel exports
have become part of the Global fashion
supply chain or eco-system. It is also part
of both multi-lateral and bilateral trade
frameworks. More importantly, India being
a complete value chain from fibre-to-fashion
provides a unique opportunity for creating
designs and innovations to improve our
share in global textile-apparel trade. Because
of the economic liberalization and FDI in
single brands, the domestic retail industry
has also rapidly grown and the overall Indian
retail market is now pegged at about US$600
billion. The textile & clothing value chain
is worth over US$ 90 billion in value terms.
In the wake of development of the retail
industry in India and coming of age of India’s
own department store chains, solo & flagship
shops, malls, there is certainly a convergence
of fashion & lifestyle taking place and even
exports and retail and it is in this context
that ‘fashion business’ as such is gaining in
importance and momentum.
I am happy to note that IAM over just
5 Academic years has established itself a
‘specialized niche institute’ in the area of
‘fashion business’ and ‘fashion management’
rather than focusing on only designs per
se. I understand that in many institutes
like London College of Fashion (LCF),
Institut Francais De La Mode (IFM) etc.,
the expression ‘fashion management’ is
being changed to ‘fashion business’. It
is appropriate and timely that IAM has
launched an “MBA programme in Fashion
Business” from the current Academic year
in line with the incoming trends. IAM is also
among the very few institutes in the country
which is offering a 4 year Higher National
Diploma (HND) with UK Edexcel with
degree options in India and overseas that to in
a denovo area of “Fashion & Lifestyle design”.
It is significant to note that there are over
187 students receiving degrees / diplomas
today in the 3rd Convocation of IAM. I also
understand that IAM has been bestowed with
“National Education Leadership Award” by
India’s leading media group Dainik Bhaskar
twice in a row for its innovative approaches to
fashion education. This is indeed a creditable
achievement. We at the ministry recognizes
such institutions which are in the ministry’s
sphere of influence to strengthen such
initiatives and it is one of the reasons why
we have encouraged IAM’s MOU with FDI,
Mauritius and even pursuing scholarship
schemes for students from neighbouring
courses to pursue education at IAM.
Going forward, it is important that the
quality of education programmes are further
strengthened. The significant strength of
IAM is its symbiotic relationship with AEPC
and its large number of member exporters.
Another feature is its global linkages which
provide opportunities for Summer Workshops

and practical exposure to overseas markets
through fairs/exhibitions etc. Such initiatives
need to be further strengthened. The students
of IAM have shown an entrepreneurial
inclination from what I have been briefed
about and launching of ventures like ‘Haryarn-V’,
‘esa’ etc. indicate this trend. Textile
industry in India requires GenNext Fashion
Entrepreneurs and we need to incubate
such young entrepreneurs to develop them
to become full-fledged business men and
women. In fact, recently the MOT, GOI
have developed a scheme for incubation in
select textile parks in India. We do hope the
graduates from IAM and other such institutes
will make use of the emerging opportunities
in entrepreneurial space to become “job
providers” than “job seekers”. There are
opportunities emerging in e-tailing’ ventures
as well. Today, the jobs in the market place
require higher level of technological skills.
Earlier generation of students again require
reskilling and further training. I understand
that IAM has a “Pro-Up centre” which
offers continuing education programmes
for working executives and other technical
personnel. The programme for pattern
makers to migrate from 2D to 3D and for
merchandisers from ‘manual to digital’ are
exemplary initiatives by IAM. Over 150 such
students have been trained in recent times.
This needs to be extended and offered in
many more centres directly or through tieup
with other institutes. There needs to
be more cooperation between different
higher educational institutions and even
vocational institutions to have a progressive
system for human resource development.
Research needs to be given considerable
importance as innovation can only emanate
from applied research. Our institutions lag
behind in this area. Indian designers need
to keep originality in designs and make their
own signatures in the world of fashion. The
graduates trained in business need to develop
more homegrown Indian brands. The
current and new professionals need to train
themselves in newer areas like “social media
marketing” apart from developing high level
skills in communication, technology etc.
I wish the graduating students the very
best and do hope that their contributions
will make a marked difference in the coming
years to place Indian fashion industry in
the global map. The faculty, management
and above all the leadership of Sri Virender
Uppal, Chairman of AEPC & IAM and Sri
Rahul Mehta, VC, IAM and Dr. Darlie Koshy,
DG&CEO need to be appreciated. My advice
to the graduating students is that there are
ample opportunities in India for innovations,
new designs, brands and you need to walk
the extra mile and even extra risk to grab
the opportunities to come out as winners in
the process.
IAM Sri Rahul Mehta ji, Chairperson of
Mewar University, Dr. Ashok Kumar Gadia,
EC members of AEPC, BOG Members of IAM,
DG&CEO, IAM&ATDC, Dr. Darlie Koshy,
SG of AEPC, Industry stalwarts, Graduating
Students and parents, faculty members
and friends of the media. At the outset, I
would like to express our deep gratitude
for the continuous support and guidance
extended by Madam Zohra Chatterji ji, IAS,
Secretary (Textiles), in all our initiatives and
endeavours.
I am very happy that in a relatively
short span of 5 academic years, the 3rd
Convocation of IAM is being held with 187
students receiving degrees and diplomas
today. I understand that over 125 students
have already taken jobs in the Apparel
industry and the rest are pursuing higher
studies or are following entrepreneurial
ambitions.
IAM is a unique institute promoted and
supported by the industry, for the upgradation
of the Apparel industry. AEPC is proud that
its contributions in Education & Training
have borne fruits whether it be NIFT, ATDC
or IAM. ATDC in the vocational education
space has become the largest vocational
training provider for Apparel industry having
trained over 125,000 candidates in just
over 3 years and is set to train an additional
equal number till 2017 crossing 250,000
cumulatively in the 5 years period. It is also
contributing nearly 55% of the MOT’s overall
ambitious training targets. I understand
from the DG&CEO that in the presentation
made by the Secretary (Textiles) recently
to the Hon’ble Prime Minister, ATDC was
mentioned and its work in skill development
appreciated. We are very thankful to you
for the support being extended by MOT to
AEPC’s education / training initiatives and to
both the Institutes especially to ATDC.
IAM is focused in charting a new path in
higher education with focus on ‘management’
and ‘business’ unlike other fashion institutes.
The students pursuing different career
oriented professional courses in IAM have the
opportunity to be part of various AEPC Fairs
and Exhibitions and also to choose overseas
exposure through ‘Summer workshops’ etc.
I am sure our students will do very well in
the industry and put up performances that
will set new standards in the coming years.
This year, to encourage the students an IAM
Graduate Show “Stylista 2014” at the IIGF is
being introduced so that students get more
opportunities to show their talent to the right
target groups.
Apparel Industry is passing through new
challenges though has entered a resurgent
phase and there is need to increase
productivity and efficiency as wages are
rising while the productivity and efficiency
not keeping pace. The efforts to introduce
Lean Management, Industrial Engineering
and such other business improvement
practices have now become the need of the
hour. I have asked both IAM and ATDC to
take upgradation programs and courses for
the working executives as well. ATDC in
its initiatives has catalyzed recently a new
Apparel Cluster in Gurgaon to take up Lean
Management initiative under an MOU signed
with NPC. There are many opportunities
which will be emerging for the passing out
students of IAM. High level skills are being
sought by the industry and by training high
caliber students, ATDC & IAM can extend
very important service for the industry. I find
that a large number of students from IAM
are of course joining the export sector while
there is the equal interest in joining design
houses, luxury brands, retail etc. With the
buoyancy in Indian apparel exports and
the convergence of exports and retail, the
students with right skills and aptitude can
certainly do very well in fashion industry.
The new programme being launched “MBA
in Fashion Business” by IAM will address
the critical gaps to train a new generation of
managers.
AEPC has a wonderful facility in the form
of Apparel House in the heart of Gurgaon
and it is our endeavor that IAM which is
offering through its MDC Design services
and the IAM with its faculty and students
providing research support actually became
part of the export promotion efforts. Some
of the faculty and students can assist in

waves | 7
the visual merchandising of the stalls by
exporters and improving presentations in
foreign fairs and assist in bringing out better
focused collections. At AEPC through
Export Promotion Budgets, we can set apart
additional support to IAM for assisting in all
such efforts.
We will also seek the support of our
ministry for making a budget line for IAM’s
Research & Innovation related initiatives.
We look forward to working closely with the
ministry in this regard.
I want to express my appreciation to all
our colleagues who have taken out their
time to be present here. Once again I place
on record the exemplary contribution and
support of Ms. Zohra Chatterji to textileapparel
industry during her wonderful
tenure. Let me also convey our heartiest
congratulations to the IAM team and best
wishes to all the students and parents.
Sri Rahul Mehta,
Vice-Chairman,
IAM
At the outset, I would like to thank the
Secretary (Textiles), Ms. Zohra Chatterji,
IAS for having been a pillar of strength and
support for the apparel industry over the
last 2 years giving us much needed policy
support as well as directions and guidance
from time to time. I must also congratulate
Chairman, AEPC & IAM Sri Virender Uppal
for his august leadership and unstinted
support to IAM just as much or more like
the previous Chairmen Sri Rakesh Vaid, Sri
Premal Udani and Dr. A. Sakthivel. I must
compliment including Dr. Darlie Koshy,
DG&CEO, IAM, Mr. Somesh Singh, Director,
IAM and the entire team of IAM for winning
the National Education Leadership Award
for the second time from the media group
ABP and Dainik Bhaskar. I must also extend
my best wishes to all the students who are
set to receive the diplomas and degrees
today at the hands of our Chief Guest Ms.
Zohra Chatterji. Being a multi-varsity it is
only natural that the certifications are being
made available to the students from different
sources IGNOU, Mewar University, Edexcel
and others. We appreciate Mewar University
for their collaborative initiatives and Edexcel
for the wonderful support over the years.
When the students who are graduating
today had joined at IAM, the industry was
probably passing through the worst phase
of depressed market conditions and stunted
growth. However, it is full of good news
now and it can be said now for the textile
apparel industry that “ACCHEY DIN AA
GAYE HAI”. The significant achievements
of IAM have been charting a new path in
India among fashion institutes focusing
more on an integrated Fashion & Lifestyle
approach, digital tools and technologies
and more importantly “Fashion Business”
as such. The more I talk to the Heads of
Departments at IAM they tell about the
stories of many students they have started a
garment manufacturing unit or a brand or a
store after having completed their education
at IAM. IAM students don’t not want to
become job seekers but they want to become
‘entrepreneurs’. This certainly augur well.
The DG&CEO will be touching on different
aspects of progress of the Institute in his
report & review. It will suffice to say that
ATDC & IAM are very much part of the
Export Promotion, because without trained
human resources at every level exports
cannot go up. Similarly, for the domestic
market, the need is to strengthen Indian
brands which can only be achieved by a very
different breed of professionals who believe
in design and management together. Having
an Education & Training arm in the form of
IAM & ATDC has certainly elevated AEPC to
another level among all the other Councils.
I wish the Graduating students my sincere
congratulations and best wishes.
Welcome Note of Vice-Chairman, IAM,
Sri Rahul Mehta at the 3rd convocation
Management, Gurgaon.

IAM & ATDC
Madam Secretary (Textiles), Govt. of India,
Ms. Zohra Chaterji ji, IAS, Chairman,
AEPC, ATDC & IAM Sri Virender Uppal ji,
Vice Chairman, IAM Sri Rahul Mehta ji,
Chairperson of Mewar University, Dr. Ashok
Kumar Gadia, SG of AEPC Sri Puneet Kumar,
Industry doyens, EC members of AEPC,
Esteemed BOG Members of IAM, Graduating
Students, new students, faculty members
and friends from the media. At the outset,
I would like to express our deep gratitude
for the continuous support and guidance
extended by Madam Zohra Chatterji ji, IAS,
Secretary (Textiles), in all our endeavours.
The world is changing beyond recognition.
I have come across an analysis which states:
“We are currently preparing students for
jobs that don’t yet exist”. With the sweep
of technology revolution and the invasion
of handheld devices, the profiles of jobs are
rapidly changing. It is not the most brilliant
who are going to survive, it is those who adapt
fast who will survive.
At IAM and ATDC ‘skill’ has been the
central focus. At IAM the front-end is
certainly skills with back-end of concepts
and knowledge. With most of the jobs
requiring 70% skills and 30% knowledge as
the new ratio, Institutions have to change
their orientation a great deal. IAM has been
right from the start focussing on preparing
“industry-ready professionals”.
IAM in less than 5 years has strengthened
its Academic programmes while also aligning
with both Skills & Knowledge needs of the
Apparel Export sector as well as Fashion
& Lifestyle trends of the rapidly growing
Domestic retail sector. Together by 2020,
Indian Textile-Apparel value chain is
pushing towards a 220 billion US$ market
size. The ‘Speed retailing’, ‘Fast Fashions’
of Zara, Mango, Uniqlo and rapid spread of
etailing’ global etc. are redefining the Fashion
Business. Among new online e-tailing Jabong
with “Online Fashion shows” and Roposo.
com with focus on elements of Fashion like
‘Colour’ acting as a gateway to multiple
brands are quite disruptive innovations. As
part of the Govt. of India Delegation, I had
the opportunity to meet Mr. Tadashi Yanai,
Chairman of Fast Retailing, the holding
company of UNIQLO (indicating 58th in the
list of Fortune 500) who had a strong advice
to “Indian Apparel Industry”; Indian IT has
become quite successful and if IT can be
linked to Fashion” Indian fashion can gain an
edge in the global competitiveness.
The 3rd Convocation of IAM in the
backdrop of 53rd IIGF therefore assumes
significance. IIGF has featured the largest
number of stalls and you can see the visible
change in presentation and quality and
designs. With 187 students convocating,
from various UG/PG/Degree/Diploma
programs being the outcomes of our unique
‘multi-varsity concept’, we are happy that
they are joining the apparel industry which
is now witnessing ‘not just green shoots but
a full “spring”, whereas when they were
students, the markets were passing through
a downturn. The convocating group of
students have already begun their journey
with this industry and there is a strong
inclination among our students to pursue
their dreams by setting up entrepreneurial
ventures. We are eager that this ‘meme’
is transferred to the incoming students. I
also take this opportunity to welcome the
new students. I welcome and thank all the
graduating Students and their parents who
have come a long way to receive degrees and
diplomas today and wish the very best ahead
in their careers.
Let me now take you through a brief
review of the Academic year 2013-14
which has added few more milestones in
the journey towards becoming a Centre
of Excellence. The introduction of 4 year
B.Tech and new generation MBA programs
during 2013 are certainly helping IAM to
reposition itself. IAM for two consecutive
years has been awarded “National Education
Leadership Award” by the Media Group ABP
News & Dainik Bhaskar. IAM 2 years in a row
have also been listed amongst the top Public
Design Institutes by ‘Career 360 Magazine’
and also placed amongst the top fashion
Institutes by “Education World” Magazine.
IAM is the only institute which has achieved
such a feat in less than 5 years compared to
its peers with over 20-25 years history and
considerable financial outlays.

waves | 11
Since 2009, IAM has been linked to
“International pathways” which is intrinsic
to the DNA of Apparel Exports. These
international programs offer Collaborative
educational programmes with leading
international institutions/universities and
are an integral part of IAM’s “Multi-Varsity”
umbrella; 9 students of IAM have just
completed a ‘Summer School program’ at
University of Wolverhampton, UK. Another
batch had earlier gone to Modspe, Paris for a
2 months attachment.
It may be recalled that at the 2nd
Convocation of IAM in January, 2013, the
Secretary (Textiles) had launched the new
B.Tech (4-years) programme in collaboration
with the Mewar University. A series of
Innovations of IAM have been captured in
“Innovations & Initiatives” a coffee table
book which was launched by Hon’ble Union
Minister of Textiles last year.
IAM students are our biggest strengths
along with our talented faculty members.
Here are some stellar examples:-
• Kanisk Bhardwaj Final Year Student
of Apparel Design and Merchandizing
(ADM) at IAM has launched his clothing
Brand “Har-Yarn-V”.
• Joyeta Rohills and Lipakshi Kakar final
year students of Fashion and Lifestyle
Design at IAM have launched a new
brand focusing on women clothing.
• Aashna Behl recently launched
SSUKRAATU a retail clothing brand
specialising in women’s Ethnic wear.
• A student Sandeep Kaidyan from APM
has set-up a manufacturing unit for the
shirts and trousers and have launched
also a domestic brand.
• An FDM student, Rianta, is running a
luxury customised packaging business.
• Yet another student, Akanksha Singh,
has launched online graphic ‘Tee’ Shirt
marketing.
Here are some more examples of Students
Achievements
• “Aditi Bhalhotra” stood First Runner Up
at Femina Style Diva (North).
• Saniya Babu student of IAM an aspiring
fashion stylist styled Bina Ramani a
well-known Celebrity & Fashion Icon for
“Libaas International Magazine”.
• IAM student Itee Bansal & Sukanya Jagga
Programme in Fashion Business with
specialisation in “Design Management,
Fashion Marketing & Innovation &
Entrepreneurship”
• IAM linked MOU with FDI, Mauritius
: IAM signed an MOU with Fashion &
Design Institute, Mauritius. IAM will
conduct in August 2014 a “Tailor Made”
program in “Pattern Engineering” to
begin with at FDI.
The UG/PG Programs at IAM have been
re-designed to provide a more “Global
knowledge and skills & knowledge package”
through different academic tracks. As per
the direction of the BOG and the Academic
Vision Committee IAM has refocused
on “Business of Fashion, Innovation and
Entrepreneurship” as the core tenets in
all its UG/PG Academic programs. Under
the umbrella of under graduate programs,
IAM offers a variety of subjects targeted to
the specific needs of the fashion / apparel
industry. IAM has launched this year, “MBA
in Fashion Business”, one of its own kind in
India.
“Pro-Up Center” at IAM offers very
unique and value added programs for
working executives and professionals who
wish to continue their learning to excel in
various fields. IAM have also made significant
contribution to the NSQF of AICTE for
Apparel Sector which was released by Union
Minister of Textiles in the presence of Dr.
S S Mantha, Chairman AICTE last year.
IAM – LEC approved by the DGET/NCVT
under the aegis of Ministry of Labour &
Employment has assessed so far more than
10,000 candidates in apparel related skill
programmes across the country.
The new partnerships in progress include
progression arrangements with Birmingham
Institute of Art & Design (BIAD), London
College of Fashion (LCF), IFM Paris etc
besides strengthening existing collaborations
with Edexcel, UK and SMR University, Italy.
With St. Cathrine’s University. IAM plans
to kick off a ‘guided study tour’ for their
students from January 2016. Recent visit
of DG&CEO / Director of IAM have helped
to concretise a number of initiatives for the
next 2-3 years telescoping IAM to its next
level of growth.
The contribution of IAM’s Media Design
Cell towards rendering designs and other
services to AEPC, ATDC & IAM require
special mention as it has now become a “one
stop solution” to Design and Media needs.
Some of the research based publications
and presentations made by IAM faculty last
year viz… Adjunct Prof. Neera Chandra,
Asstt. Professor Guncha K. Sharma,
Associate Professor Archana Puri deserve
special mention. The research work and
publications of the faculty will be integral to
the growth story of IAM.
I want to place on record our gratitude
to the Chairman, IAM, AEPC&IAM Sri
Virender Uppal for the strong support in the
progress of IAM. I also take this opportunity
to express my sincere appreciation for the

support and wisdom extended by VC, IAM
and the IAM’s BOG members and AEPC
for the infrastructural and other support
provided from time to time. I must also
appreciate the enthusiasm, hardwork and
dedicated efforts of the entire IAM team in
the overall progress of IAM. All of us have
read at some point or other Lewis Carroll’s
“Alice in wonderland” :
“Would you tell me, please, which way I
ought to go from here?”
“That depends a good deal on where you
want to get to.”
“I don’t much care where”
“Then it doesn’t matter which way you go.”
with a poem of Kedarnath Singh quoted by
Prasoon Joshi, an alumnus of NID whom I
greatly appreciate : “ MAINE EK BACCHE SE
POOCHA, HIMALAYA KIDHAR HAI, USNE
APNI PATANG KI AUR ISSHARA KIYA.
SACH KAHOON, MAINE PEHLI BAAR
JANA HIMALAYA KIDHAR HAI “. Each
person amongst us especially the passing out
students has his / her own ‘Himalaya Peak’ to
climb and those who finally do it succeed in
life and ‘in our eyes’.
FASHION
FOR YOUTH
The youth has shown
keen interest in
studying subjects
that are contemporary
and futuristic,
as in the case of
management in the
fashion sector, which
calls for creativity
to be moulded with
commercial acumen. In
this exclusive interview
with the DG and CEO
of Institute of Apparel
Management (IAM)
& Apparel Training &
Design Centre (ATDC),
Dr. Darlie Koshy,
highlights the features
of new MBA Program
in fashion business
being launched from
14th July 2014 at IAM.
Q. What are the parameters that mooted
the introduction of this academic discipline
(MBA, Fashion Management)?
A. India is a country of more than
550 million youth and therefore India
can influence the ‘Fashions for
Youth’ around the world. However,
so far, most of the institutes have not
been focusing on ‘Fashion as a Business’;
their expertise remains mostly
on the Design area. This needs to be
now changed, as ‘Design’ is connected
to Brands, and Brands need to have
well-defined target groups, positioning
and promotion. Focus on ‘Fashion as a
Business’ will also open up career opportunities
to many students.
Q. How many students are you intending
to enroll in the first batch?
A. Since the MBA in fashion Business
is a dual campus programme to be offered
by IAM at the Mewar University
with an option to pursue one semester
overseas, the initial batch size would
be around 25 to begin with.
Q. With this element of managerial
skills linked to Fashion technology,
will there be a yardstick similar to ISO
standardization, in the grading of various
products and services?
A. Benchmarking is better than standardization,
as ‘global benchmarks’
would need to be set for the Programme.
Accordingly, IAM is in dialogue
with institutes like BIAD and
LCF in London and IFM in Paris, for
ensuring that there will be intellectual
benchmarks for the Programme.
Q. Is this idea of Fashion Management
new in India and how do you foresee
the overall impact among the fashion
Designers?
A. Certainly this idea is quiet new in
India. The Fashion world is now beginning
to embrace the business world on
multiple fronts-efficiently, economically
and ecologically. For this, brands,
designers and fashion businesses as a
whole are finally willing to admit that
they need new age MBAs.
Every Designer faces or reaches
a stage in career cycle where he/she
needs to rediscover his/her signature
brand(s). MBA in Fashion Business
would certainly help both general designers
and entrepreneurs. Fashion is
closer to a ‘perishable product’ as time
is the critical factor in determining its
positioning and price. Dealing therefore
with rapid changes and dimensions
of time make the Fashion Business
different and the new program
trains students to pick-up the outgoing
and incoming trends.

FASHION &
TECHNOLOGY
Adapting to the new
technology has always
been the trend at IAM.
And this time too it
has been included in
the selection process
for admissions.
The candidates
who applied for the
admission for the
academic year
2014-15, appeared for
the Skype interview
with the faculty
members and the
management at
IAM. This boosts the
confidence in students
to open up before the
group of interviewers.
It also provides an
opportunity for the
panel of judges
including the
faculty members to
understand the ‘real’
background of these
students. It saves
huge time, money and
energy on behalf of
students and parents,
says Somesh Singh,
Director, IAM.
The concept of Fashion Innovation Lab
(FIL) was mooted at the Institute of Apparel
Management (IAM) after a delebrate
thought process of delivering
technology updates to the students and
professionals in the field. The major benefit
observed by professionals after learning
technology is in saving lead time, cost
of sampling, transportation cost, no more
manual pattern making, user friendliness
of the softwares and freedom from
miscommunication with their customers.
We began with “Designer’s Graphics
Toolkit”, a new program to upgrade
skills of the learners in computer graphics
technology. This program helped students
to explore the usage of computer
graphics in Fashion industry. The course
dealt with the concepts of vector and bitmap
graphics.
FIL conducted short term programs
throughout the year which included
modules on creating digital mood boards,
theme boards, garment sketches and illustrations,
manual pattern making,
digital pattern making, testing the garment
on the required size of the 3D fit
model, virtual fit sessions and creating
virtual shows. “The 2D pattern obtained
from the software is transformed into 3D
virtual garment through simple clicks
and steps and the output is obtained in
no time. Furthermore, the 2D patterns
can be graded to multiple sizes, printed
through a high end plotter and also can
be saved in computer and reused later”
says Manka Vasti, Coordinator Fashion
Innovation Lab.
Digital Pattern Making and Virtual
Prototyping together provides a complete
solution in apparel designing and manufacturing.
FIL has successfully trained
more than 1000+ learners through such
customised workshops/term programs.

IAM’s Spreecast attracted many
It was for the first time in India a Fashion Institute
tried out new technology of Spreecasting to communicate
with their prospective students. Mr. Somesh
Singh, Joint Director, Institute of Apparel Management
presented details of courses offered by IAM from
Gurgaon through Spreecast.
“The development of apparel industry in 80’s were
mostly dedicated to exports. In 90’s there were time
both the domestic market and exports boomed. Indian
brands were a hit in domestic market. By 2000 there
was a stable domestic and retail market and in new
millennium the focus shifted towards the arena of retailing
due to FDI and other government initiatives.
Today the industry has dramatically shifted towards
innovation and technology. And this is the time when
we require Gen next professionals to help the industry.”
adds Mr. Singh who was discussing the evolution
of apparel industry in India.
IAM admissions are now open for Indian and International
Pathways. There are B.Sc and M.Sc programs
in domain of Fashion.
As many as 156 people attended the Spreecast
of which most of them where from South and North
Eastern States of India.
Fashion Jobs
App Design
We are living in an intelligent world and
our devices control most of things. Fashion
Communication students of Institute
of Apparel Management (IAM) has recently
launched a new Mobile App ‘Fashion Jobs’
that helps job seekers in fashion industry to
find designer placements.
The App provides latest information regarding
jobs and career options in fashion
styling, fashion design, web content creation,
merchandising, photography etc. The
App will also have sections for visual advertisements,
videos, events and social media
networking with a job posting option for the
employers.
“As the final year students of Fashion
Communication, we have been looking for
internship options and we found that there
is a need for ‘compiled job listings’ so that
we could select the best job offers....’ says
Tarang Agarwal, Fashion Communication
student.

INDUSTRY PROJECT
By ARUSHI MATHUR,
Fashion & Lifestyle Design
Label Innovation
Labels were first introduced in America under the art of
Lithography, it was the first commercial art. The purpose of
the label has always remained the same that is not just to
attract the attention of the customers but also give them
general information about the product and the brand associated
with it. In the 1940’s and 1950’s, clothing labels
were often a work of art. Beautifully stitched and properly
placed. Time went by and many experiments were done to
the label design and production. The label designs were tied
out on different materials. Modern labels are sophisticated,
with innovations tried all the time.
WHY INNOVATION?
Since the last decade there has not been much innovation
in the label industry. If we look back we have developed
extremely well in fields of technology, communication and
transportation. The fashion world was also changing. Today,
all products are being connected with the latest technology
making our lives simpler. Thus there is a need to bring innovation
to the label industry by tackling the problems of
the current label industry and taking them forward to a
different level.
PROBLEMS FACED IN
A CLOTHING LABEL
The biggest problem faced in a
clothing label today is that almost
every item contains labels
in multiple languages, sometimes
even to 23 languages as
they are selling globally. This
surely increases the length of
the label. In some cases there
are different labels for different
languages which makes consumer
uncomfortable.
SUGGESTIVE SOLUTION
The major problems faced in labels are of the length and
the multiple information written on it in different languages.
Transferring all the information into a QR(Quick Reference)
code which is then linked to the brand site reduces
the amount of information printed on the label. The brand
name and the size of the garment will remain on the label.

New trends in Visual Merchandising
Visual Merchandising is changing to innovations with lot
of technology input to it. The old trends of using props
just as a filler is moving out. In this digital age nothing
is impossible. The young visual merchandisers can now
dream big!
In the 4th semester students of Fashion Communication
were asked to dress up mannequins according to the
seasons and themes like Summer Fantasy, Spring Nautica/Bubble
Gum were allotted to different groups in the
class for their Visual Merchandising project.
Sureena and Antalya worked on the season Autumn
with the theme Star Struck. They dressed up the mannequin
with white linen pants, made a crop top out of
a stole, pairing with a gold sequence jacket. The props
they used were a brown suede hat, leather shoes, studded
bracelets, and a hand bag. The decoration done in the
background was done with dried leafs and to add the ‘star
struck’ shimmer, they used fibre glitter strands. The two
girls also tried to add a little sparkle by making a flower like
pattern on the mannequin, near its left eye.
“New techniques are tried and tested by our students.
And the market is waiting for them… I am sure our students
will do their best and make us proud.” Said Guncha
K Sharma, Assistant Professor who teaches Visual Merchandising
to Fashion Communication students.

amongst top-3 fashion institutes in Delhi, NCR
amongst 10-top fashion institutes nationally.
IAM is the youngest fashion institute to receive
this honour and perhaps the only institute in the
domain of ‘Fashion Management’ amongst all other
national institutions. Envisioned growth of the Indian
Apparel industry will need over one million
merchandisers, marketing and design professionals,
strategic design managers, product development
experts, production managers, product development
experts and technologists with more
in-depth knowledge.
‘Dekha Jayega’ the street play
IAM students of Fashion Communication, Fashion & Lifestyle
Design worked as a group on a street play they named Dekha
Jayega and presented it in the Fashion Cafe. The play focused
on environmental pollution issues. Students wanted to voice
out their concern.
The street play was conceived, planned and produced by the
students as part of their class assignment. “At IAM we are encouraged
to work on out of the box experimentations on assignments.
And we planned this street play to make an awareness
on the youth of our country. We really need to protect our environment.”
said Ms. Devshri Dayal who coordinated the play.
It took the students two weeks of time to prepare the street
play. They worked on the script and songs. Enacted it several
times for a better performance.
“And when the day came, we were still worried about the
quality of our production. But then, we need to keep the deadlines
intact! Hope you all liked our performance.” Ms. Tanisha
a professional dancer from Delhi, NCR said.
IAM Develops Forecast
for Domestic Market
First time ever a domestic trend forecasting
has been developed for SS
‘14 for the Retail Industry. IAM faculty
and students worked on grade detail
to fruitify initiative to bridge the gap
between the Domestic and the Global
Market.
The Spring Summer ‘14 is based
on the fusion of ‘Nature and Man
Made Creations’. This will not only
help Indian Retailers but also the cusumers
in deciding ‘What will be in
Fashion’ ahead of the season.
IAM students learnt tremendously
treading the unsure paths while
working on this project.

they exhibited their creation of jewellery, headgear, footwear
and drapes put together to form a costume reflecting eras like
Egypt, Rome, Greece, Renaissance period - an interpretation
combining the modern look at the Fashion Cafe, IAM campus.
It took them an entire week to develop the entire collection
(work of art) to a near perfect Fashion Show. Every student involved
to their best to make the event a success.
“I am really happy that students have put in great efforts to
IAM students at InStore Asia
IAM students of Fashion Communication and Fashion Design
Management streams along with their faculty visited
Mumbai to attend the InStore Asia-VM-RD Retail Design
Awards 2014.
The students also visited Daily News and Analysis
(DNA) newspaper office at the India Bulls Building,
Lower Parel, Mumbai. They interacted with the Editor-in-
Chief Mr. C.P. Surendran and Senior Editor,Mr. Binu John
for an hour. Mr. Surendran discussed the fashion trends
and about the famous Fashion Designer John Galliano.
John Galliano was sacked as Chief Designer of Christian
Dior after a series of claims that he had subjected women
to tirades of anti-Semitic abuse. Hours before his dismissal,
the British fashion designer had been denounced by
Israel-born actress Natalie Portman, who is the face of a
Dior perfume. IAM students actively participated in this
conversation and voiced their views.
Mr. Surendran was impressed by the stand IAM students
took on this issue. Ms. Sureena of Fashion Communication
elaborated on the need of ethics in Fashion industry.
At the InStore Asia-VM-RD Retail Design Awards function
students got a chance to experience the new trends
in Visual Merchandising. There were six teams worked
on Instant VM models. Students could see how the Creative
Thinking progressed to better VM models. After this
event they watched the presentation of National Awards
in different categories of Visual Merchandising. At the
after event party students got a chance to network with
industry experts and professionals.
Students also visited high style malls in Mumbai and
took lessons on the Visual Merchandising practices.
IAM students got an unique opportunity to interact
with Mr. Nilesh Wagh, Art Director of ‘EK THA TIGER’’
the Salman Khan fame Hindi feature film. He was Art
Director for the recent Hindi feature film BOSS. Students
Discussing the
country’s future!
Politics isn’t something just a few among us discuss
and debate. Contrary to public perception that the young
generation is not serious about the current state of affairs
of India, debates happen among the youth these
days on the topic of election much more than ever. Take
a look at one such instance here. The Fashion Communication
(4th Semester) students of Institute of Apparel
Management (IAM) based in Gurgaon have launched
an Online Video Channel ‘Political Papad’ with a tagline
‘Kadak, Taze Bol ka Dose’.
According to Sureena who coordinated the shoots,
“as part of our Brand Building and Management course,
we wanted to do something different. And this idea came
up. It is timely too! We decided to work on an Online Video
Channel based on Indian Democracy and its Politics.
