Alumni Corner New Alumni Council Reforming Interested alumni have volunteered to spearhead the renewal of the Mitchell College Alumni Council. Donna Medina (‘07), David Reyes (‘08), Alonna Knight (‘07) Zaria Sto (‘08) and current student Maria Cornwell (‘10) are working on iniaves to draw alumni to the campus and encourage alumni to mentor current students. The Council invites alumni who would parcipate in a student enrichment pilot program to call Carol Brown at 860-701-5068 or email brown_c@mitchell.edu. The program will connect alumni with current students who have the same professional focus. “Alumni connually talk about the value that a Mitchell College educaon brought to them. I have always wanted to be a part of developing a strong alumni base that encourages alums to get involved, ” says Medina. The Council has moved toward furnishing all alumni with a free e-mail address. Other plans include special campus events which focus on alumni parcipaon. Contact Carol to volunteer for the Alumni Council. Creang Stronger Student Connecons in Campus Life You spoke, we listened! Based on student feedback through focus groups, Mitchell College is taking several steps immediately to serve our students beer. Here’s what is planned for the near future: • FOOD! The Student Affairs office is in discussion with Dining Services to implement students-driven changes to the dining plan. • TRANSPORTATION! We are working towards creang a more useful schedule of weekly shules. • COLLEGE SPIRIT! We are launching spirit boosters. Visit our website to join us at our games this winter. • A PLACE TO HANG OUT! Watch for the Red Barn Café opening so that students can have a space to hang out, with food. • GAME ROOMS! Each residence hall will have a game room. They are being designed…please be paent while we make this happen. • CHILL OUT! We will help you develop your resume or graduate school search on a oneto-one basis, but we also count on your connecons and ps to assist new Mitchell grads or transioning alumni with career choices. Faculty Focus connued from page 14 Faculty Promoons Two faculty were also promoted for the 2008-2009 academic year. Sco L. Horton, Ed.D., of the Behavioral Sciences Department was promoted from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor. Andrew McHugh, Ph.D., of the Department of Science, Technology, Environmental Sciences and Mathemacs was also promoted from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor. Class of 2008 Alexandra Chalovicz has taken a job as an Associaon Associate with SmithBucklin, the world‘s largest associaon management company in Washington, DC. www.smithbucklin.com. She has shared that she loves her job and is enjoying the excitement of Washington, DC. Class of 2000 David Apuzzo has opened up a brand new Photography and Art Gallery in Hamden, CT and celebrated a Grand Opening on October 25. David’s Gallery features work by local arsts in addion to serving as a studio and gallery for his own work. Check out David’s website at www.davidapuzzophotography.com. Class of 1987 Paul Tolley, Vice President of Syntec Opcs, was recently awarded a patent for a new technology he co-developed. Class of 1958 – Happy 50th! Sheila Epstein Stockel and husband Ted were present for the fesvies during Fall Weekend in October. Sheila is a rered banker. “We do a lot of travelling and in the last 6 months have been in Hawaii, Alaska, Canada and several other states. We have grandchildren, two aending Arizona State University and one in high school.” Sheila and Ted’s email address is tsstockel@yahoo.com. Francis Coogan, from Pearl, Mississippi, was not able to aend the Fall Weekend. He said “that he had some of his finest days here at Mitchell and it prepared him for senior college and his life in general.” Merri Helfferich, “For the past year I have been doing External Progress Evaluaons on U.S. government-funded educaon grants to Alaska educaonal instuons for improvement of Alaska Nave aainment. I’ve also hiked and camped in the Colorado Weminuche Wilderness high country, visited Greece and Turkey, and floated the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. In October I presented two work sessions at the Society of Research Administrators Internaonal conference in Washington, DC. My wife and I will spend three weeks in El Salvador to work with Salvadorian high school teachers to help improve their conversaonal English and then spend several months in New Mexico where we will be doing a lot of bicycling, hiking, and entertaining friends from Alaska fleeing the cold and dark.” Class of 1959 Barbara Nye (Mrs. Norman Strojny) writes “I’ve achieved 75 years of age, remarried four years ago, relocated to Delta, Utah. My experience as an alumna of ’59 was a foundaon to finish my Bachelor of Science in Business in 1995 at Charter Oak. I am an observer with my husband of a dairy, run by my son John Nye and wife Maria; it is a window on life.” Class of 1964 William (Bill) Bonvie has published a new book entled “Chemical-Free Kids, The Organic Sequel.” Bill writes “I was the editor-in-chief of Thamesana during the ’63-’64 school year. (You might say I was a protégé of Ted Hargrove, from whom I learned the fundamentals of good journalism), and am currently a free-lance writer, having contributed commentary to a number of newspapers over the past quarter century as well as having co-authored a couple of other books.” Check out Bill’s book at www.chemicalfreekids.com. Class of 1971 Edward Belbruno debuted his latest painng on October 4, 2008, tled Oppenheimer Channeled as Microwave Radiaon of the Universe. This artwork was created especially for the Metropolitan Opera Guild’s Panel Discussion, Atomic Fallout: The World of the Bomb. Edwards work can be viewed at www. edbelbruno.com. In addion, Edward has wrien a new book “Belbruno’s Universe” which offers an inmate glimpse into the life of the arst. Class of 1974 Dan Mara, Commissioner of the Central Atlanc Collegiate Conference has been elected President of the Eastern College Athlec Conference. Previously Dan was Associate Vice President for Athlecs and Fitness at Post University and Assistant Director of Athlecs and Women’s Basketball Coach at Mitchell College. Class of 1948 Happy 60th! Rose Ann Strazzo and Don Slate organized a lively group of alumni for Fall Weekend; in aendance were Jack Riley of Avon, Jim Robertson of Mysc, and Margaret Picazio of Boca Raton, Florida, Burnadine Flanagan of Houston Texas, who came to visit her grandson who aends Mitchell and to reconnect with her classmates. All had a wonderful me at a recepon held at Rose Ann’s home and dinner at On the Waterfront. Marriages Kenneth Arthur Phaiah, Jr. ’03 (Criminal Jusce) married Sarah Marilyn Davis on June 7, 2008 in Pomfret, CT. They live in Oneco, CT and both are members of the Oneco Fire Department and Moosup Ambulance.
