Along the Thames Honoring President Jukoski Receives Top Honor from Chamber of Eastern Conneccut On November 17, 400 people aended the William Crawford Disnguished Service Award dinner honoring Dr. Mary Ellen Jukoski, president of Mitchell College. The Crawford Award is an annual honor given by the Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Conneccut recognizing an outstanding member of the community who has contributed not only to the quality of life in the region but also to his or her fellow neighbors. Hosted by the Mysc Marrio in Groton, the evening’s program featured a performance by the Mitchell Singers, and remarks from Stephen Percy, past Crawford recipient and a former College trustee, Isabelle Singer, Execuve Director of the Eastern Conneccut Symphony Orchestra, Rick Milner, Chairman of the College’s Board of Trustees, and Kevin M.R. Mayne, Vice President for Enrollment Management and Markeng. The invocaon and benedicon were given by Reverend Carolyn Paerno of All Souls Unitarian Church in New London. Outside the College community, Dr. Jukoski serves on numerous boards and commiees and has created many collaborave partnerships with the community of Southeastern Conneccut. Most recently, she was integral in the development of a partnership with the College’s science faculty and New London Public Schools, parcularly the collaboraon with the Science and Technology Magnet High School. In June 2000, she was instrumental in founding the Southeastern Conneccut Consorum of Higher Educaon, involving ten other public and private instuons. 8 MitchellTODAY Michelle Jacobik, of SAVA Insurance and Chair of the Chamber of Eastern Connecticut’s Board of Directors, presents Dr. Jukoski with the Crawford Medal State Aorney General Richard Blumenthal presents a proclamaon from the State of Conneccut L. Dedication Dr. Dawn Brill Duquès ’64 & Ric Duquès Academic Success Center October 22, 2008 Under cover of a fesve tent, over 300 guests enjoyed the brisk aernoon in celebraon of the first new building dedicaon in 40 years. Located on the center of Mitchell’s academic campus, the new building houses the four student support programs that now serve the enre student body of almost 1,000 students. The four programs – the Tutoring Center, the Advising Center, the Learning Resource Center, and the Career Center are all located in the new 12,000 square foot facility. Ric and Dawn Brill Duquès ’64 and family, College trustees, faculty, administraon, students, staff, City officials and friends of the College aended the standing-room-only celebraon. The hour-long ceremony featured proclamaon from the City, performances by the Mitchell Singers, and a check presentaon by the faculty and staff showing their commitment to the College’s next phase in the campaign for Mitchell College. But what resounded as the most inpsiring moment of the day, was a presentaon by four students, Maria Cornwell ’11, Ricardo Ledbetter ’12, Kevin Buiocchi ‘11 and Agnilza Dos Santos ‘10. Ledbeer’s remarks summed up the aernoon when he said,”this new building means that Dawn and Ric Duquès believe in me and in what I can accomplish. On behalf of all Mitchell College students, I am so grateful.” The Duquès Academic Success Center is named in recognion of Dawn Brill-Duquès ’64 and Ric Duquès’ generous support of Mitchell College. Their transforming gi was the catalyst for the College undertaking a comprehensive campus plan to support the College’s mission and respond to the compeve college marketplace. The ceremonial ribbon is cut, officially opening the Duquès Academic Success Center. New London Mayor Kevin Cavanagh presents a proclamaon to Ric and Dawn, memorializing October 22, 2008 as Dr. Dawn Brill Duquès ’64 Day in the City of New London Four students gained thunderous applause when they spoke on behalf of all students in appreciaon of Dawn and Ric.
