Mariners Set for
Maiden Voyage in NCAA

“The NCAA objects to instuons using racial/ethnic/
naonal origin references in their intercollegiate athlecs
programs,” says NCAA President Myles Brand.
Chosen by a commiee of Mitchell College students,
student athletes, faculty and coaches, “the Mariner name
consistently received strong, favorable reacons,” White
says. “The associaon of the name with the ocean embodies
characteriscs the Mitchell student body sees in its
athlec teams: powerful, fierce, inmidang and ferocious.”
The Mariner name also provides a connecon to
the college’s locaon and heritage.

font and a set of
marks – a family

“Changing a college athlec identy is a significant transi-
on, not only for our athlec program, but also for our students
and alumni who have fond memories of their college
days,” says White. “We believe the new images will represent
Mitchell College well. We expect the image to evolve
over me, and believe we have an identy and mascot we
can be proud to have associated with Mitchell athlecs.”
The new 3,000-square foot fitness complex houses cardio
equipment, a state-of-the-art strength training circuit, free
weights, and a private pilates/yoga area.
In addion to the NCAA membership, Mitchell
College is also a founding member of the newly
formed New England Collegiate Conference
(NECC). The mission of the NECC is to provide
for athlec compeon among instuons that
share similar athlec aspiraons and are commied
to the importance of the total educa-
onal experience for students engaged in sports.
The NECC
comprises independent instuons
whose student bodies are similar
in academic achievement
and whose missions and
curricula are similar in
educaonal growth
of
its student body.
The member instuons
share an
educaonal culture
that seeks to foster
academic excellence.
Members include Bay
Path College, Becker Col-
lege, Daniel Webster College,
Elms College, Lesley University, Mitchell
College, Newbury College, Southern Vermont
College and Wheelock College.
Mitchell is also a member of the Eastern Collegiate
Athlec Conference (ECAC). The ECAC is
the naon’s largest athlec conference and only
mul-divisional conference, with 321 member
instuons ranging across 16 states from Maine
to North Carolina and Westerly to Illinois.
