Greengs from Mitchell College! As I write this leer to you all, our campus is covered in a blanket of white, with more snowy weather on its way. For the past two months we have had frigid cold temperatures and several storms, however the fesvies and camaraderie of the recent holiday season, combined with the high level of excing happenings here at Mitchell has kept us all warm indeed. Yes, despite the cold and snowy weather, there is a great energy and spirit on our campus as we start the new year and the new semester. I’m happy to report that despite the downturn in the economy, we connue to buck the trend that most small colleges are facing and are experiencing record enrollment. As you will see from this chock-full issue of MitchellTODAY, we have much to celebrate as we enter 2009. This past semester, we welcomed our new Mariners Mascot during Reunion/Fall Weekend, students moved into the new Mariner suite-style Residence Hall, we dedicated the Duquès Academic Success Center, we enjoyed a visit from a Woodrow Wilson Vising Scholar, and we received a $225,000 grant from the Johnson Foundaon. These are major accomplishments for our small college on the Thames. As Mitchell College connues to grow as a premier baccalaureate instuon, we are mindful of the fact we could not accomplish each of these iniaves without you. In this day and age, it truly takes a community to not just survive, but to thrive! So, grab yourself a hot cup of tea, coffee or maybe some hot chocolate, curl up with a good view of the falling snow, and enjoy this new issue of MitchellTODAY. Mariners Set for Maiden Voyage in NCAA New Moniker and Conference as Mitchell College Charts its Course in Division III by Karen C.L. Anderson You could say that the Mitchell College athlecs program has undergone a sea change. On the surface is a brand new identy and logo – the Mariners – represented by a new mascot, a personified wave of blue water, as yet to be given a name. Both were debuted during Alumni & Parents Weekend, October 17-19.

By the end of the current academic year, Mitchell’s athlecs program will have completed its transion from the Naonal Junior College Athlec Associaon to the Naonal Collegiate Athlec Associaon’s (NCAA) Division III. Mitchell has been a provisional member of the NCAA since 2003. The process started when Mitchell College Athlec Director Mo White and her predecessor Doug Yarnall (who rered in 2001) started thinking about the future of Mitchell’s athlecs program.
