EAZA News 43 – 2003 20 July - August - September ZLIN-LESNA - CZECH REPUBLIC A healthy two-toed sloth (Choloepus didactylus) was born in Zoo and Chateau Zlin-Lesna on 20 January 2003. Four two-toed sloths received in 1999 had been kept together since their arrival. In March 2002 we unfortunately lost one male because of an intestinal inflammation. Nonetheless, as the gestation period is reported in the literature to be anywhere between 6-11 months, it is not quite clear which of the males fathered the offspring. The young, a male, was born during the night and was positioned with his head towards the female’s birth canal. During the afternoon of the next day he turned round and was seen suckling. He accepted solid food (lettuce) by the age of two weeks. He was seen with the second female on two occasions, during which the mother each time tried to get him back but was not successful. The keepers therefor gave the young back to his mother. On a sad note we lost our breeding male of guereza (Colobus guereza occidentalis) in July 2002. He was probably the oldest guereza kept in the EAZA region. He was at least 29 years old and had fathered 21 of the 37 young born at our zoo. Source: Roman Horsky CERZA - LISIEUX CERZA welcomed the birth of four spectacled bears (Tremarctos ornatus) in 2002. It is the first time this species bred at CERZA. Three spectacled bear adults have been present at CERZA since 1996. Female ‘Tacha’ was born on 23 January 1996 at Basel. The males ‘Snoopy’ and ‘Moritz’ were born at Tierpark-Berlin on 12 January 1996 and 30 January 1995 respectively. ‘Margot’, a female born at Jersey 25 November 1994 arrived from Paris in 2001. Births and Hatchings Photo: Zoo and Chateau Zlin-Lesna The bears are housed together in a 6000 m2 mature deciduous forest enclosure surrounded by an electric fence. Tacha’s cubs ‘Uco’ and ‘Uca’, a male and a female, were born on 16 January 2002. Margot’s cubs ‘Cayambe’ and ‘Sumaco’ (both females) were born on 24 January 2002. The four cubs were parent-reared and stayed three months in the inside enclosure. The outside enclosure was divided into two parts, so that the eight individuals were not mixed. Two groups of one male and a female with her cubs were created based on interactions between the adults. The eight bears were finally mixed on 13 February 2003 and proved to be very tolerant of each other. The cubs climb quite well and often climb up into the trees. As the paternity of Tacha’s cubs is unknown we will sample blood and hair according to the Spectacled bear EEP coordinator Lydia Kolter’s recommendations. If we can confirm that blood and hair are similarly suitable for DNA analyses it will be no longer necessary to immobilise and take blood from all the bears of the Leipzig line with unknown ancestry. While a bit of training might be necessary it should be easy to get some hairs from bears when feeding them through the bars. Other important recent births at CERZA include: 0.0.1 Eld’s deer (Cervus eldii), 0.0.1 lion-tailed macaque (Macaca silenus) and 0.1 gelada (Theropithecus gelada). A very important arrival at CERZA is ‘Gaby’, a 23 year old female white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum simum) from Paris Zoo. They deal with the intertwined relationship between giant pandas and people, the fossil record to trace the evolution of giant pandas, a sampling of plants and animals originating from the home region of the pandas, followed by a history of the environmental changes caused by humans. Belgian fauna and alien species - Marc Peeters and Jackie L. van Goethem (2002) The symposium 'Status and trends of the Belgian fauna with emphasis on alien species' was organised by the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences on 14 December 2001. With more than 250 participants, 60 poster presentations and 25 oral contributions, this day constituted an interesting and successful event. The proceedings, containing more than sixty articles in English, French or Dutch, are now available. This illustrated book focuses not only on Belgium, but contains also information on cases in other locations, e.g. freshwater invaders in France, the grey squirrel case in Italy, Lepidoptera invading the United Kingdom and the Mnemiopsis case in the Ponto-Caspian.
