EAZA News 43 – 2003 o2 July - August - September A word from the Chairman, Miklos Persanyi was appointed as Minister of Environment and Water in Hungary in May this year. Consequently I suddenly became the chairman of the marvellous organisation EAZA, because I was elected vice-chairman of EAZA in Barcelona last year. For those of you that don’t know me so well, or not at all, I am a zoologist by profession (with a special emphasize in ethology/behavioural biology) and have been employed at the Skansen Foundation in Stockholm for 23 years. I have also been Chairman of SAZA (the Swedish Zoo Association) since 1996 and been involved in both EAZA and WAZA for a number of years in different committees and working groups. Presently I am active in the EAZA Executive Committee, the EEP Committee, the EAZA Conservation Committee and the EAZA Bear TAG. EAZA has a 15 year history and very much has been achieved during these years – the last four to five years not the least. We now have a Strategy for the coming decade and a number of Action Points to work on – more than thirty actually. Still, there are challenges that the zoo community as a whole, and EAZA especially as the largest zoo association in the world, have to face in the near future that are not ‘covered’ by the Strategy, or are only touched upon. To mention but a few: the welfare issue at large, internal quality control of membership, the transition from the current ISIS software to ZIMS. Welfare of animals is becoming an increasing point of interest to more and more people. The welfare of wild animals in zoos has come into focus in some European countries already and this focus will most probably spread to all EUcountries in short time. The animal welfare interest groups are well-meaning, but often lack knowledge of individual species and the circumstances they are kept under in zoos. Nevertheless we, as professionals in keeping and caring for these wild animals, must look very carefully and critically at ourselves regarding animal welfare. Are we really keeping and caring for these animals in the best way? Are they in a good situation from an animal welfare point of view? Honestly, this is not always the case - definitely not in all zoos around the world, but also not always in EAZA zoos. This brings me to the second point. I strongly believe that EAZA needs to develop a method of internal ‘quality control’ of already existing members of EAZA. An option would be to have existing EAZA members fill out the same accreditation questionnaire that prospective members are required to complete. Good zoos with good standards for keeping and managing their collections would not hesitate a minute to answer the questionnaire. Members that know they do not meet the demands may be less willing, but it would also give them a good ‘trigger’ to improve – and those zoos who cannot or will not change cannot be kept as members of a professional zoo organisation. The rest of the world expects us to keep and display the animals in our care in a very good way – the best possible way for each different species. We must all meet this expectation in the near future. Not only the best zoos within EAZA – and there are many good zoos in EAZA already – but ALL members of EAZA must do so. Another pressing challenge is the necessary transition from the current ISIS system (including ARKS, SPARKS, med-ARKS, REGASP) that will go extinct in a few years, to ZIMS (Zoological Information Management System). ZIMS will be a web-based system that will cover all the different programmes in the current ISIS products. A reliable and trustworthy registration system is a ‘must’ for the zoo community, and EAZA has to find ways, both economically and logistically, to realise this absolutely necessary changeover. Our American colleagues have already committed to contributing financially to the costs for the ZIMS operation – and EAZA zoos will have to do the same if we at all want to have any influence on the ZIMS programme. We have no other options than ZIMS for the time being, thus the EAZA Zoo and aquarium community needs to adopt the ZIMS system as fast and smoothly as possible – and take part in the development of the system, to gain respect and trust with the conservation community and the EU- and national authorities.
