She replaces Dr. Helmut Pechlaner. —————————————————————————————————— in memoriam EAZA was sad to learn of the death of Jim Cronin, who passed away on 17 March 2007. During the past twenty years, Jim Cronin established himself as an international expert in the rescue and rehabilitation of abused primates, and in the enforcement of international treaties aimed at protecting primates from illegal trade and experimentation. Jim Cronin founded Monkey World which he and his wife Alison built from a small refuge to a 65 acre wildlife park. The park is home to more than 160 rescued primates of 16 different species and is rated as one of the most popular family destinations in England. The cable television channel Animal Planet has documented the frequent rescue missions and undercover investigations undertaken by Jim Cronin in Europe and Asia for the past ten years in the series Monkey Business. EAZA was also sad to learn of the death of Mike Lockyer, who passed away on 25 February 2007, aged 75. Mike Lockyer spent a lifetime working with wild animals. In the 1960s and 1970s he developed Longleat Safari Park, thus being among the pioneering animal men and women who established the world’s first ‘safari parks’ outside Africa. This concept was to change irrevocably the way animals were kept and viewed in captivity. Mike Lockyer became a well-known face on the BBC TV programme Animal Park, which was filmed at Longleat Safari Park. In 1984 he moved to John Aspinall’s Port Lympne and Howlett's Zoo parks in Kent. As zoological director he was committed to the preservation of endangered animals and promoting successful breeding programmes within the parks.
