SYNGENTA SPECIALIST CROPS
A new broad spectrum fungicide for bulb onions,
garlic and shallots
SUMMARY SHEE T SPRING 2008
In Brief
• Liquid formulation containing
azoxystrobin and chlorothalonil
• Trials show robust, broad-spectrum
disease control: Botrytis squamosa
(leaf spot), downy mildew and
Cladosporium allii-cepae
(leaf blotch)
• Contains active ingredients from
different chemical groups, this
benefits an anti-resistance strategy
• Azoxystrobin, a strobilurin
fungicide has the ability to extend
green canopy
Disease control:
Broad-spectrum activity is the key strength of OLYMPUS
• Leaf Spot: Botrytis squamosa*
Leaf Blotch
• Leaf Blotch: Cladosporium allii-cepae*
*Trials demonstrate good activity
OLYMPUS provides high levels of control against these important diseases. Both Leaf
Spot and Leaf Blotch are often associated with secondary infection following an initial
Downy Mildew attack. Other fungicides used in bulb onions, garlic and shallots** may
fail to give the best green leaf protection due to failure to control these pathogens
**Which are downy mildew specific
• Downy Mildew: Peronospora destructor
Downy Mildew
OLYMPUS provides useful suppression of this pathogen. It should be used in alternation
with specific downy mildew fungicides to give best control.

Anti resistance strategy
• Azoxystrobin is a strobilurin and an important fungicide
for broad-spectrum disease control in bulb onions,
garlic and shallots, helping to maximise marketable yields
• Mixing fungicides with different modes of action may help
minimise resistance development. OLYMPUS is a mixture
of a strobilurin with a chloronitrile fungicide active against
the same key diseases in onions
• To safeguard the future of the strobilurin fungicides it is
important to further alternate OLYMPUS with alternative
modes of action
• The FRAC recommendations for the number of strobilurin
treatments in a programme, when applied in a mixture
such as OLYMPUS are as follows:
Total number
of fungicide
applications per crop
Improved quality
Tank mixing efficiency
The active ingredients in OLYMPUS, azoxystrobin and chlorothalonil are well tried and
tested in onions
Trials have demonstrated good efficacy against the major pathogens; Leaf Spot - Botrytis squamosa
and Leaf Blotch - Cladosporium as well as useful suppression of downy mildew. Use in alternation
with specific downy mildew products for best control.
During periods of high disease pressure, maintain a 7 day spray programme. Both active ingredients
prevent the spread and development of the major diseases
Excellent disease control combined with the strobilurin effect of azoxystobin encourages the green
canopy to persist and delays senescence. This enhances both skin retention and colour of the
onions improving marketability
OLYMPUS has been successfully mixed with trace elements and fungicides. This includes brands
of Manganese sulphate and Magnesium sulphate
