Magic
Amy Davis and kids Thomas and Olivia.
“
At night when
the chandelier
is turned on and
the rain is falling
outside it truly
becomes a magical
place and we
have had many
a wonderful night
spent out there
with friends
and family.
TOM DAVIS’ FAMILY OWNS AND RUNS AN
impact window and hurricane shutter business in
south Florida. They do a good bit of work in the
historical areas and on the island of Palm Beach. At
one time, they found themselves replacing a multitude
of older windows and doors. Tom’s wife Amy,
party planner by day and blogger by night (thepineappleroom.blogspot.com),
hated to see the beautiful
windows—wonderful pieces from the past—end up
as garbage in a landfill. At her request, Tom began
“
taking them home. The couple stored
them, waiting for inspiration about their
re-use.
A lazy day in the backyard resulted in
the construction of a small greenhouse
from eight windows. It remained for
a few years until daughter Olivia began
preparing to have a Christmas tea
for her classmates. Following in her
creative mom’s footsteps, young Olivia
took a look at the greenhouse and
said, “You know what would be really
neat? If the little greenhouse was big
like a real house, and we could put all
my desserts and candy table in there
for the party.” The idea was born. “My husband and
I couldn’t argue with that,” Amy begins, “because
when your five-year-old requests a tea party to collect
toys for tots over the holidays instead of a birthday
party, you build her a house!” DB
Over the years the glass house has turned
into many things, a reading room with a
bench and coffee table, a dining room, a
bedroom for summer napping and most recently
an actual glass conservatory where
we took our inspiration from the one in the
movie Practical Magic.
