What’s on LGfL for Secondary Schools?
Premium content and LA projects for e-learning
This booklet illustrates examples of the online teaching and learning resources provided as an integral
part of the London Grid for Learning (LGfL) education broadband service available to London schools.
London Local Authorities and schools working together as the London Grid for Learning have provided an
array of high quality online learning resources which are available to all LGfL connected schools at no
extra charge. The learning resources or ‘content’ come from three main sources:
1) The LGfL has created, licensed or commissioned a range of premium software resources focussed on
supporting learning and teaching in the Secondary phase.
2) Supported by LGfL, London LAs produce online content resources that include the best and latest
practice in using a range of software and hardware across the curriculum. These resources are then
made available across the region through the LGfL community.
3) The London Grid for Learning is also a member of the pan-UK Educational Network (NEN), which
brings together all the regions of the UK, each with its own unique content – available for all to share,
and accessible via the LGfL Content Management System.
A carefully selected panel of practitioners drawn from across the region evaluates a wide range of
materials and only select those resources which are assessed as being of the highest standard for use by
LGfL connected schools throughout the London region.
Selection by LGfL is widely regarded as an accolade of considerable significance by education content
publishers. Schools can therefore be assured that time given to familiarising with these resources is well
invested.
Access Rights
In most cases, access is automatic when viewing the resources in school (on grid) for schools with a LGfL
broadband connection. There are some exceptions to this general rule, where a LGfL USO log in is
requested even when accessing the resources in school. E.g. UsOnline eSafety and the Creative Toolkit
resources.
Icons that explain access to LGfL resources
Username and password are not needed to access this resource.
The USO ‘off grid’ icon indicates that a USO log in will be required to access the
resource when viewed away from an LGfL connection (e.g. accessing from home).
A small number of resources ask for a USO log in even when a user is in school and
using an LGfL connection. e.g. Celebrating Us, Us Online and the Creative Toolkit. The
USO ‘On grid’ icon indicates that a USO log in will be required, as progress made will
be saved while using the resource.
This icon indicates that the resources are fully accessible on mobile devices including
iPads, iPods and iPhones.
Teachers and pupils at connected schools can access LGfL content anywhere online using their LGfL
Unified Sign On (USO) username and password. For further information about this LGfL service visit

The Content Grid is simple to use. For example, to access materials for Key Stage 3 Science click on the
green arrow on the KS3 row below Science.

These short films are ideal (e.g. 15 minutes in a staff meeting) to raise awareness of the rich range of
resources which LGfL offers, and are intended to encourage teachers to look for themselves and make use
of the resources.

Audio Network
The Audio Network collection has been upgraded
to include 50,000 tracks of original music for 2013.
Organised by style and genre, the extensive
database offers both a solution to the problem of
copyright and a rich, high quality resource widely
used within the media industry.

Search for something ‘peaceful’ to set the tone as
children enter the room or perhaps ‘spooky’ to
open your Halloween production. An otherwise
extremely expensive resource made free to use
for LGfL connected schools.
The Guardian and Observer news archive
LGfL has secured a perpetual licence for all LGfL connected secondary schools to access the Guardian and
Observer Digital Archive, making available online every page, every article, every advert of the Guardian
since 1821 and the Observer - the oldest Sunday paper in the world - since 1791. Previously only available
on microfiche or in fragile bound copies, you can now take a journey through time from the execution of
Marie Antoinette to the first man on the moon at the click of a mouse.
The Digital Archive includes over 1.2 million pages of articles, photographs, cartoons, illustrations and
advertisements up to the year 2000. Teachers and pupils with an LGfL USO can enjoy 24/7 online access
free of charge.

There is no such thing as ‘copyright free’
resources - so LGfL has sought to provide digital
resources that can be used in an educational context
without breaking the law.
For example, the LGfL gallery offers high quality, high

Mathematics
● Number Line
Mathematical Association resources on LGfL
The Number Line tool offers a dynamic
environment in which teachers and pupils can
explore numbers and relationships between
them. In its simplest use, number lines can be
created quickly and easily - the display can be in
decimal and/or fractional notation and the
numbers can also be hidden. A point on the line
can be dragged along the number line and its exact
position revealed as a decimal to a chosen number
of places. Further points can be positioned on the
line and the environment will support pupils to
make connections between related points on the
line and begin to generalise about relationships
using simple algebraic rules.
● Coordinates and Graphing
Coordinate graphs can be easily created on a
specified set of axes by a mouse click or a tap on
an interactive whiteboard. Where appropriate,
graphs of algebraic functions can be
superimposed, encouraging pupils’ conjectures.
Up to five colour-coded functions can be plotted
on any set of axes and the table of values are
displayed alongside the graphs. Digital still images
and video clips can be imported as a background
onto which points can be plotted and investigated.
Used in this way, real images and videos can be
explored and connections made between the
shape and the mathematical function that shares
that shape.
In collaboration with Intel and The Mathematical
Association, the Mathematical Toolkit and Number
Line have been designed specifically to support the
teaching and learning of mathematics for pupils at
Key Stage 3. The tools are now available as fully
featured online tools in the LGfL Maths Kit.

● 2-D Shapes
This tool allows the teacher or pupil to create 2-D
geometric objects such as quadrilaterals, circles,
triangles, lines, arcs, ray segments and vectors on a
co-ordinate grid of a specified scale. Once plotted,
the vertices can be labelled and the internal
angles, side lengths, area and perimeter revealed.
Shapes can then be translated, rotated, reflected
and enlarged on the co-ordinate grid using the
transformation features of the tool. Each time a
shape is transformed, a ghost of its previous
position is left on the screen supporting the
investigation of sequences of transformations.

Maths and Broadcast Engineering
Produced in partnership with Ravensborne College of Design and Communication, the real
world context of Broadcast Engineering is used to exemplify key mathematical concepts for
Key Stage 4 mathematicians.

National Weather Stations – online
The LGfL weather station network is the densest online weather station network in the world.

Science
One of the most popular Science resources provided by LGfL.
Many of the learning objects (or lessons) can be downloaded onto a laptop for use with a whiteboard, or
on a handheld device.

Students can create and manage their own DiDA e-

UsOnline - Our online world and Meme
Us Online 2 extends the acclaimed Roar Educate e-
safety product with specific content created for the
secondary school audience, including Our Online
World for KS2 and 3 and Meme for KS4.
The resources address digital and web literacy, with
activities which explain about making and posting
content, cyber-bullying, copyright, networking and
gaming, privacy and identity fraud, security and

Rising Stars have joined with LGfL to offer schools 15 free eBooks from the Rising Stars range, each
developed to engage reluctant readers aged 7 to 14+.
Digital reading has been recognised as helping to
close the gender gap in reading ability between
boys and girls. These eBooks can be used on any
device, from PCs and netbooks to iPads and Kindles.
Each eBook features age-appropriate story lines
and controlled language levels that support
struggling readers and motivate switched-off
readers. The licence includes use at school or at

The Prodigals Online
In development for over a year, this innovative resource about supporting Key Stage 4/5
school leavers as they seek to secure an independent life is now ready for use on LGfL. The
resource features a 40 minute film, filmed on 35mm film format, featuring a cast of characters
experiencing the ups and downs of living away from home for the first time.

produced in partnership

for the Housing Needs

Council) who has
secured NHS funding to
help produce the online
version of ‘The
Prodigals’.
The original film was created in 2007 complete with offline education pack; the online version includes a
bespoke web interface, completely new curriculum materials and a new edit of the film into thematic
sections to link in with all the teaching material.

The film is accompanied by three music videos that are linked to the narrative of the film and a soundtrack

Citizenship
Everyone Matters
Everyone Matters is a resource aimed at Key Stages 3 and 4, and tackles the issue of
homophobic bullying, featuring recreations of homophobic bullying scenarios acted out by
students from London Schools.
The materials have been developed
in partnership with the
Metropolitan Police and the staff
and students from the London
Boroughs of Wandsworth and
Waltham Forest.
The materials can complement
established programmes of study
related to anti-bullying including
homophobic bullying. The
sensitivities related to these
materials are acknowledged and
supported within the curriculum resources, which feature support for issues of engagement and the Social
and Emotional Aspects of Learning.

Celebrating Us, Us Online and Who We Are
LGfL’s ‘Celebrating Us’ co-production with ROAR for KS2 and KS3 is proving tremendously popular, as a
Citizenship learning resource, a cross-curricular resource and an introduction to online safety and
awareness.

The Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace
LGfL has worked in partnership with The Royal Collection to create a unique resource about
the daily work of The Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace.
Exclusive access was granted to LGfL to film key staff
members as they went about their daily work. The resource
features extensive video resources showing the techniques
and rationale as to why centuries old traditions continue to
support the Royal Household and the significance they have
for wider society today.
The LGfL ‘The Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace’ portal
features an extensive range of video resources including
behind the scenes at The Royal Stables, The Royal Saddler,
The Royal Farrier, The Royal Restoration Workshop, The
Royal Cars and The Royal Liveries.
Her Majesty the Queen granted permission for LGfL to feature high resolution photographs and scans
from the Royal Collection and Royal Archive.
A ‘Resource Bank’ feature allows access to the

support its use across the curriculum.

Creative Toolkit
The LGfL Creative Toolkit is a sophisticated, yet easy to use, collection of creative online tools
for use across the curriculum and is of relevance for all Key Stages.
The Creative Toolkit provides an eSafe
publishing and blogging system allowing
online animation, voting and a wide
range of document and webpage
creation facilities.
Children are able to start and finish their
work in different locations, be it home or
school.
Teachers moderate all work prior to
publishing on the school’s self-contained
publishing site, using a simple
moderation interface. An additional
feature allows anyone (e.g. parents) to
comment on work published, which then
also can be shown on the school
publishing site, but only after a teacher
has moderated the content.
A free J2e app can be downloaded for iOS devices which provides USO enabled access to the Creative
Toolkit. In addtion, J2e is now aviable in a HTML5 version.

Leonardo Da Vinci: Anatomist
Discovered 400 years after they were created, these high resolution images, supplied by The Royal
Collection Trust, are highlights from the Leonardo da Vinci: Anatomist exhibition shown at The Queen's
Gallery, Buckingham Palace, during 2012.
The exhibition was the largest ever of
Leonardo da Vinci’s studies of the human
body. Leonardo has long been recognised
as one of the great artists of the
Renaissance, but he was also a pioneer in
the understanding of human anatomy.
He intended to publish his groundbreaking
work in a treatise on anatomy and, had he done so, his discoveries would have transformed
European knowledge of the subject. But on Leonardo’s death in 1519 the drawings remained a mass of
undigested material among his private papers and their significance was effectively lost to the world for
almost 400 years. Today they are among The Royal Collection’s greatest treasures.

So much to see – so little time
To make the best use of LGfL resources and services, both within and outside of
school, it is essential for each user to have their own LGfL login credentials - their
‘USO’ or Unified Sign On. This is one username and password for each teacher and
for each pupil, which gives access to all LGfL resources, even when outside of
school.
USO is also the key to many other LGfL services such as a brilliant email service,
masses of online storage ‘in the cloud’, and even free Microsoft ‘Office’
applications, for use online. Teachers need their USO to upload videos to ‘Video
Central’ and Podcasts. If your school is one of the many which uses the LGfL ‘London MLE’, then your USO
can be the key to that as well.
