Welcome to Swinburne University
of Technology, Sarawak Campus!
2009 is Swinburne’s one hundred
and first year of providing real-life
education and research programs
aimed at preparing our graduates
to get good jobs and to be able to
make an immediate impact on the
economy and the culture wherever
they live. We are determined to
make the next hundred years even
better than the first.
2009 also sees the next stage of
the major development of the
Kuching campus completed, giving
Swinburne world-class, state-ofthe-art
classrooms, laboratories,
and computer facilities, as well as
recreational facilities such as a
multi-purpose sports and
gymnasium facility in this exciting
part of the world. Everything is
now in place for working, studying
and enjoying student life.
As a branch campus university in
Malaysia, we offer identical
degrees to those offered in
Australia and we award the same
Australian testamur - just as if you
were studying in Australia.
Currently we offer courses in
engineering, business, IT,
multimedia, and starting this year,
science and design.
This course guide has been
designed to assist you in finding
details about the courses available
at the Sarawak branch campus
that range from foundation to
postgraduate programs.
We offer you a choice of either
completing your program locally
with us at the Sarawak campus or
in one of the campuses in
Melbourne, Australia. Since the
courses and subjects are the same,
you are able to transfer to or from
Australia/Malaysia at the end of
any semester - subject to obtaining
the appropriate visa from the
relevant government.
The branch campus university in
Sarawak is a partnership between
Swinburne University of Technology
in Australia and the State
Government of Sarawak, operating
through its two foundations,
Yayasan Sarawak and the Sarawak
Higher Education Foundation.
Already we have students from
more than 30 countries as well as
Malaysians studying in Sarawak.
Here you can obtain a quality
Australian degree from a 101-yearold
university at a fraction of the
Australian cost. To ensure the
comparability of our degrees
whether you study in Australia or
Malaysia, we have extensive quality
assurance and enhancement
mechanisms in place and you will
encounter Australian, Malaysian and
other international staff.
The courses offered are designed to
prepare graduates to live and work

Swinburne has developed successful

University of Technology Sarawak
Campus in Malaysia, in 2000. There is

mobility of teaching staff between
Swinburne and our partner
universities.
Swinburne is the only Australian
university invited to be a member of
the European Consortium of Innovative
Universities (ECIU), which aims to
foster student and staff mobility and
share innovative programs to give

Our campuses
Swinburne has five campuses in
Melbourne: Hawthorn, Prahran,
Lilydale, Croydon and Wantirna. Its
only international campus is in
Sarawak, Malaysia.
Hawthorn is Swinburne’s main
campus in the inner-city suburb of
Hawthorn and it is set amongst the
cafes, boutiques and bookshops of
Glenferrie Road, and with the
convenience of a supermarket and
train station practically on campus, it
offers an ideal lifestyle. There are
several on-campus accommodation
options available or you could choose
to live nearby and walk to class
through the parks and leafy
backstreets.
Hawthorn is one of the most beautiful
residential suburbs of inner Melbourne
and many of Melbourne’s most
exclusive private schools and colleges
are located here.
Prahran is one of inner Melbourne’s
most vibrant suburbs and home to
Swinburne’s prestigious Faculty of
Design and the National Institute of
Circus Arts. The campus is a creative,
lively learning environment just off the
famous Chapel Street shopping
precinct, which is lined with
restaurants, night clubs and shops
stocked with the latest local and
international fashions.
A train station just around the corner
provides easy access to Melbourne’s
famous trams and it is a convenient
location, whether you are heading into
the city centre or to the neighbouring
beachside suburb of St Kilda.
Lilydale campus ensures international
students have a valuable learning
experience. Facilities include the
Student Village accommodation (which
overlooks beautiful Lake Lilydale),
Mitchell’s View training restaurant (for
hospitality students) and a new
purpose-built postgraduate research
building, which houses the Centre for
Regional Development.
Support staff at Lilydale run a special
host program, to give you the
opportunity to make new friends and
establish international contacts.
The campus is easily accessible by
train and you will enjoy the
convenience of a shopping centre
within walking distance.
Swinburne also has campuses at
Croydon and Wantirna, which are
friendly and relaxed outer-suburban
locations where a select number of

Malaysia

Swinburne’s only international
campus is located in Malaysia,
a country that has been
recognised as one of the most
developed in Southeast Asia.
The country is separated into two
regions: Peninsular Malaysia which
lies on the Malay peninsula and the
states of Sabah and Sarawak on the
island of Borneo.
To the south of the peninsula is
Singapore while to its north is
Thailand. Peninsular Malaysia is
separated from Sabah and Sarawak by
the South China Sea.
Malaysia is a democracy with a prime
minister at the helm. Kuala Lumpur,
situated towards the west coast of the
peninsula, is the capital city.
With a population of about 26 million,
Malaysia is a multicultural country. You
will find Malays, Chinese, Indians and
other indigenous groups living in
harmony, making it a melting pot of
many colourful cultures.
While Malay is the national language,
English is widely spoken. Mandarin
and a variety of Chinese dialects are
also commonly spoken as are a host
of other ethnic as well as indigenous
languages and dialects.
Freedom of religion is practised.
Malaysians embrace Buddhism,
Christianity, Hinduism and other
religions, while the official religion is
Islam.
Situated near the equator, the country
enjoys a sunny tropical climate where
it is summer all year round. The
weather is influenced by the Northeast
and Southwest monsoons.
Education Hub
Malaysia is rapidly gaining a reputation
as a centre of educational excellence
in the Asia-Pacific region. The
establishment of local and foreign
institutions of higher learning in the
country is testimony that it is the
preferred education hub in the region.
The affordable tuition fees and cost
of living combined with the high

institutions of higher learning and
political stability make Malaysia an

All private institutions of higher
learning are registered with the
Malaysian Ministry of Education, and

Kuching
Swinburne’s Sarawak Campus is in
Kuching, the capital city of the East
Malaysian state of Sarawak. Kuching
has been described as one of the most
liveable and attractive cities in
Southeast Asia. Rich in history with
old-world charms blended into 21 st
century modernity, it is the largest city
in the state and rapidly developing.
Character and culture
Meaning “cat” in the Malay language,
Kuching was originally a busy riverine
trading post in the old days. Today, it is
a delightful blend of the old and new,
where a mix of colonial era and
modern buildings makes up the city’s
skyline.
With a population of more than half a
million, the city enjoys a clean, relaxed
and friendly environment. There are
many places to visit and experience.
Among them is the award-winning
Kuching Waterfront, a beautifully
landscaped esplanade on a stretch of
the old part of the city overlooking the
Astana, the official residence of the
governor of Sarawak. The Waterfront is
a popular gathering place especially as
the sun sets beyond the scenic Mount
Serapi.
Cafes and souvenir shops, dating back
to 1864, selling a variety of ethnic
handicraft, antiques, art and craft line
the Main Bazaar near the esplanade.
The Sarawak Museum, built in 1891 in
the style of a Normandy town hall, is
another interesting stop. It is regarded
as one of the best in the region. Other
places of interest include the Chinese
History Museum, Islamic Museum, Cat
Museum, Courthouse and Brooke
Memorial and the Round Tower.
Once in Kuching, you will soon
discover that eating out is a favourite
pastime among the local folk. Around
the city an array of restaurants, food
courts and open-air eateries offer a
wide variety of traditional food ranging
from Chinese, Indian, Malay and Thai
to contemporary Japanese and
Western.
Shopping malls and complexes carry
the latest fashions and a plethora of
international labels. The city offers a
variety of entertainment and night life.
Only minutes away from the city are
magnificent mountains, unspoiled
beaches and even an award winning
“living” museum, the Sarawak Cultural
Village. You will find that the resorts
and golf courses are of international
standards.
International events
Kuching is no stranger to hosting
international events among which is
the annual Rainforest World Music
Festival, a unique gathering of
musicians from all continents and
Borneo who perform on stage.
Kuching is also the venue for the
annual ITF World Junior Tennis
Championship and Sarawak Junior
World Masters Golf Championship.
With its lower cost of living and
peaceful environment combined with
its good infrastructure, Kuching is an
ideal destination to pursue tertiary
education for both Malaysian and
international students.
Explore Sarawak
With its rainforest the size of Austria,
Sarawak houses the world’s richest
and most diverse ecosystem, making it
a popular destination for eco-tourism.
Its numerous national parks are known
for their many natural wonders. It is
home to many international heritage
sites such as Mulu Caves, Niah Caves,
Bako and Gunung Gading national
parks.
Sarawak, the largest state in the
country with a population of only 2.3
million, is also the most culturally
diverse state in the country. Its 29
indigenous communities are well
known for their friendliness and
hospitality, and nowhere else in
Malaysia can such colourful diversity
be found.
Internally, Sarawak is well-connected
by a network of air, road and river
transportation making travel
convenient and affordable.
It is normally wet from November to
February and hot and humid the rest
of the year.

At Swinburne Sarawak we ensure that
our graduates are well-prepared for
the international workplace. Its Study
Abroad and AsiaLearn programs allow
university students from Australia,
Europe and the United States to spend
a number of semesters at Swinburne
Sarawak.
Swinburne is the only Australian

Practical courses
The courses at Swinburne Sarawak
are identical to those offered by its
home campus in Melbourne and are
designed to prepare you for the
workplace. They tackle real-world
issues and provide hands-on learning.
Most courses involve applied learning:
classes in the studio or laboratory,
case studies, excursions, teamwork,
research projects, and project-based
assignments assessed by industry
practitioners. These are just a few
examples of the different ways we
teach our students practical skills.
The curriculum of the courses are
developed and regularly reviewed in
consultation with industry. This
ensures that in Australia alone, more
than 30 professional and accrediting
bodies recognise Swinburne courses.
Swinburne Sarawak collaborates with
an integrated circuit design house and
a silicon foundry to develop
semiconductor-related subject content
to better suit industry needs.
A number of its courses are accredited
by the relevant professional bodies
such as Engineers Australia, Board of
Engineers Malaysia, CPA Australia,
ACCA and vetted by the Australian
Computer Society. This ensures that
the courses meet the highest
standards of the respective
professions and industries.
Engineering students are required to
undergo the compulsory Professional
Experience in Engineering, a
cumulative equivalent of a 12-week,
full time industry experience. The
option to complete six to 12 months of
Industry-Based Learning, where they
train within industry, is also open to
Engineering students.
Research excellence
Research underpins and invigorates all
Swinburne activities. Swinburne
Australia was placed in the top three
universities in Melbourne for Research
Intensivity in the Good Universities
Guide 2008. In 2007, Swinburne’s
research income continued to grow
strongly, exceeding the results of
previous years. Swinburne was
awarded A$4.2 million in Australian
Research Council (ARC) funding under
the ARC’s 2008 Discovery Projects
Grants. Swinburne also achieved
excellent outcomes in other ARC
funding schemes for 2008.
From its initial purpose of conducting
tests of integrated circuits, the IP Test
Laboratory at Swinburne Sarawak has
expanded its activities to include
research and development into
Microelectromechanical System
(MEMS) reliability and mechatronics
devices. Some of these projects are
funded by the Malaysian Ministry of
Science, Technology and Innovation,
and Ministry of Finance.

implementation of renewable and
alternative energy technologies with
the Malaysian Public Works
Department.
Its Information Security Research
(iSECURES) Lab has research interests
in all aspects of data and computerbased
security. Current projects
include network security, watermarking
and steganography.
Unique learning centres
The School of Engineering and
Science at Swinburne Sarawak is
among one of the biggest at the
university and has one of the most
modern equipment and facilities. An
additional budget of about RM9 million
has been set aside in 2008 for the
purchase of the latest engineering
equipment.
Swinburne Sarawak’s Multimedia Lab
and Design Studios are equipped with
Adobe, Autodesk and Macromedia
range of software such as Illustrator,
Photoshop, Flash, Director,
Dreamweaver, 3DSMAX, Audition, After
Effects and Premiere Pro to allow
students to create 2D/3D animation
projects, interactive Flash games,
graphic and web design, digital video
and audio editing, post-production and
effects.
Its production facilities include Sony
HD video cameras, lighting kits,
Marantz digital audio recorders and
complete Sennheiser boom
microphone sets, allowing students to
create professional video productions
such as short films, commercials and
music videos.
Swinburne Sarawak undergraduates
are able to transfer to or spend a
semester at Swinburne Australia under
its exchange program. They will have
access to some of Australia’s most
dynamic, innovative and creative
learning centres. Swinburne’s
Australian Graduate School of
Entrepreneurship (AGSE) is one of the
most experienced graduate schools in
the Australasia and Pacific region. The
AGSE’s MBA program was awarded
four-star ratings for Corporate Links
and Graduate Salary in the Good
Universities Guide 2008 rankings.
The National Institute of Circus Arts
(NICA) on Swinburne’s Prahran
campus is a national centre of
excellence for professional training in
circus arts and physical theatre. NICA
is an Associate Member of the
Federation of European Circus Schools
(FEDEC).
Swinburne’s Faculty of Design
incorporates the National Institute for
Design Research (NIDR). It is

Our Campus

The ideal study
environment
Swinburne University of
Technology Sarawak Campus
was established in Kuching, the
capital city of the Malaysian
state of Sarawak, in 2000. The
university is jointly owned by
Swinburne University of
Technology, Australia, and the
Sarawak state government via
Yayasan Sarawak (Sarawak
Foundation) and Sarawak Higher
Education Foundation.
The establishment of the Sarawak
campus is in tandem with Malaysia’s
goal of becoming an educational
centre of excellence.
The 16.5-acre campus is situated at a
prime location about 15 minutes from
the Kuching city centre. It currently
has a student population of more than
2,500. The university expects to have
5,000 students in the next five years.
All degree courses offered by
Swinburne Sarawak are approved by
the Malaysian Ministry of Higher
Education.
Academic strengths
The Sarawak campus, which comes
under the direct control of the Higher
Education Division in Melbourne, offers
undergraduate degrees in business,
design, engineering, science, IT and
multimedia.
It also offers postgraduate research
programs at PhD and masters levels in
these disciplines.
Other programs include one-year
foundation studies in Business,
Design, IT/Multimedia and
Engineering/Science as well as
diploma of Business and Information
Systems, and Electronic Engineering
which articulate into degrees.
The School of Language and
Foundation offers a range of
preparatory and English language
enhancement programs.
The programs available at the Sarawak
and Melbourne campuses are the
same and the same Australian
testamur are awarded to graduates.
Students therefore have the
opportunity to obtain a qualification of
international standard from a
101-year-old Australian institution, in
Malaysia.
The programs are designed to prepare
graduates to live and work in a
contemporary world characterised by
high levels of interaction between
economies and societies. Careeroriented
education is combined with
academic study to arm students with
relevant skills applicable to industry.
A number of its programs are
accredited by professional bodies such
as CPA Australia, ACCA and the
Australian Computer Society.
Engineers Australia and the Board of
Engineers Malaysia have also
accredited two of its engineering
programs.
Swinburne Sarawak students have a

To ensure consistency and quality of
courses, examinations at the Sarawak
Campus are moderated by Australian
as well as Malaysian academics. An
academic advisory board made up of
academics from both the Sarawak
campus and Swinburne Australia
monitors the academic quality and
sets academic standards.
Highly qualified and experienced
academics make up the teaching staff
at Swinburne Sarawak. Many hold
PhDs and masters degrees and bring
with them years of experience from
the industry.

As an on-going development exercise,
academic staff are regularly sent on
exchange programs to the Swinburne
campuses in Melbourne. Key experts
from Melbourne also make regular
development visits to the Sarawak
campus.
The Sarawak campus has a strong
focus on research and undertakes this
with a number of private and public
organisations. At present, its iSECURES
lab spearheads research in
cryptography and authentication
protocols as well as to engage in
collaborative research work with
external parties.
Other research projects include
emerging devices and technologies,
intelligent and autonomous systems,
efficient and sustainable infrastructure
and one on renewable and alternative
energy technology with a government
agency. The university has also signed
an agreement with an external
organisation to conduct research in
biotechnology.
Academic facilities and
resources
Swinburne Sarawak is equipped with
the latest educational technologies
and all subjects have a web presence
in addition to the usual face-to-face
delivery by academic staff.
With an excellent computer-to-student
ratio, students have quick access to
the Internet and the database of
Swinburne University in Melbourne, to
facilitate the learning and research
work of students. All computers are
linked with high-end networking
infrastructure via high-speed leased
lines.
Learning facilities include
mechatronics workshops, electrical
and electronics workshops, science
and computer laboratories, lecture
theatres, lecture rooms equipped with
computers and projectors, state-ofthe-art
digital resource centre, student
lounge and an auditorium.
Student support services and
Student development activities
Students have the option of joining a
wide range of extra-curricular sports
and recreational clubs that are aimed
at nurturing them into well-rounded
individuals with strong leadership
qualities.
These clubs are managed by the
students themselves with academic
staff as advisors. Activities include

At Swinburne Sarawak, we offer
various accommodation options to
ensure that your home
environment suits your lifestyle.
On-campus hostels
Two fully furnished on-campus hostels
are available to students.
Divided into male and female blocks,
they are designed to accommodate
more than 400 students. The rooms
are available for single occupancy or
twin sharing. Furnishings include bed,
study table, chair and wardrobe.
Ceiling fans are a normal feature while
selected units are equipped with airconditioning.
Besides wireless computer network
access, amenities include common
reading/visitor areas, kitchen and
dining rooms as well as laundry and
drying areas.
Security is provided 24 hours a day
and wardens look into the needs of
students at each hostel block.
To reserve a room, a non-refundable
booking fee is required. Payment of
rental is to be made for each
semester.
Off-campus accommodation
These apartments are located within a
reasonable distance from the campus.
Each apartment has four rooms.
Students share a common area,
kitchen and two bathrooms.
Each room is furnished with a single
bed, study table and chair, wardrobe,
fan and curtains.
The apartment comes with dining sets,
washing machine and refrigerator.
Rental starts from RM250 to RM350
per month (without air-conditioner) and
includes utilities. You are advised to
book at least six weeks ahead and a
non-refundable booking fee is
required.

Here are some of the annual activities that are held in Kuching and
other parts of Sarawak which you can look forward to:
w Rainforest World Music Festival: This festival brings together renowned
world musicians from all continents as well as indigenous musicians from
Borneo. Held in July in Kuching, fans come from around the world to enjoy
the concerts and workshops.
w Kuching Festival: Look forward to city parades, stage shows, food fairs,
concerts and competitions to mark the anniversary of Kuching as a city, in
August.
w Sematan Festival: This event takes place in August and features beach
games and exposition of local products in the seaside town of Sematan and
its beach area, about two hours’ drive from Kuching.
w International Borneo Kite Flying Festival: See swirling performances from
Malaysian and international kite flyers displaying their skills. Watch the sky
for a multitude of kites in various colours, shapes and sizes. This event
normally takes place in August and the venue changes each year.
w Tidal Bore Festival: Held in the sleepy town of Sri Aman, 194km from
Kuching. Immerse yourself in water sports, local culture, food fair, good
music and dance performances that are part and parcel of the festival.
w Sarawak Regatta: This adrenaline-rushing annual event, held around August
and September, sees competitors outpacing themselves in paddleboat,
powerboat and canoe competitions along the Sarawak River. The Kuching
Waterfront is a great place to witness the event.
w Open Houses: Major Malaysian festivals such as Hari Raya Aidil-Fitri,
Chinese New Year, Gawai Dayak and Christmas see celebrants welcoming
friends and families into their homes and serving them specially prepared
dishes.

Student exchange program
The Swinburne Sarawak student
exchange program allows degree
students an unmatched opportunity to
enrich their tertiary learning
experience in Melbourne at Malaysian
cost. Selected students will complete a
semester of study in Melbourne. The
number of participants is subject to a
quota every semester. Selection is
based on the student’s academic
achievement (at least a credit average)
and an active involvement in cocurricular
activities.
Intercampus transfer
Students can choose to complete their
degrees either in Kuching or
Melbourne. Since the courses and
subjects are the same, students are
able to transfer to our campus in
Melbourne at the end of any semester
subject to obtaining the appropriate
visa from the relevant government.

The library at the Sarawak campus
provides learning resources and
services to support the university’s
teaching and research programs.
The services and facilities have been
specially designed to integrate modern
digital technology with traditional

Academic terminology
Course/Program
This is what we call your doctorate,
degree, diploma, certificate or
complete program of study. It is made
up of a number of units.
Unit of study (unit)
An individual subject or module
studied as part of a course/program.
Prerequisite
A unit of study or other requirement
that must be completed in order to
take further units at Swinburne.
Credit point
Each Swinburne unit of study has
a credit point value. Most units are
12.5 credit points.
Study load
Load relates to the number of credit
points studied in each teaching period.
International student-visa holders are
normally required to take a full-time
study load. For most courses at
Swinburne, a full-time study load is
50 credit points in each semester.
Semester
The university year is made up of two

Our quality assurance processes start
with having Melbourne and Kuching
lecturers as part of the same teaching
team, in constant contact through
email and telephone. In addition,
academic visits by Melbourne staff to
Kuching and visits by Kuching staff to
Melbourne assist in developing close
curriculum and teaching links. The
curriculum is developed jointly in
Melbourne and Kuching, closely based
on the Melbourne curriculum.
Assessments (examinations,
assignments and laboratory work) are
moderated to ensure that the same
high standards apply to both
campuses. A number of our courses
are accredited by professional bodies
such as CPA Australia, Engineers
Australia and Board of Engineers
Malaysia, testament to our high
standards and strict quality control.
Additionally, a significant number of
our academics hold PhDs and
Masters, and have had industry
experience in their field of expertise.

Studying English at
Swinburne Sarawak
To help you improve your English
language proficiency, Swinburne
Sarawak offers you a range of
English courses.
The university determines whether you
need an English course on the basis of
the English Placement Test and/or
assessment of the School of Language
and Foundation.
Courses
The objective of Swinburne Sarawak’s
English courses is to provide you with
English support that you need to
enable you to cope better with your
program studies.
We have two types of English
language courses: intensive and
supplementary. The Swinburne
Sarawak English Placement Test
determines which English course you
should be on. The Intensive course
runs in the months before your
diploma, foundation or degree
program, whereas the Supplementary
English courses run during your main
program.
Course Description
Intensive English Course
The Intensive English course is one
you might need to take before entering
university. It is a pre-requisite course
for students who do not meet the
university’s entrance requirements for
English.
This course is divided into Level 1 and
Level 2, and is designed to give you
maximum interactive learning practice
in listening, speaking, reading, writing,
vocabulary and grammar. Each level
runs for 10 weeks and comprises 250
hours of learning in the classroom,
language lab and library. It covers
General English and English for
Academic Purposes. Students have to
pass the exams at Level 1 and Level 2.
Level 1 incorporates 2 hours per week
of IELTS training for students who wish
to take the IELTS test.
Supplementary English Course
for Foundation Students
– English Proficiency
The English Proficiency is a prerequisite
course that you must pass to
complete your Foundation program
successfully. On passing the English
Proficiency, you may still be required to
study Supplementary English in your
diploma or degree program.
The course is five hours per week for
14 weeks, totaling 70 class hours. The
course teaches General English and it
focuses on sentence level grammar
and short pieces of writing.
Supplementary English Course
for Diploma and Degree
Students
The Supplementary English Course is
for you if you do not meet the
university’s English requirements for
your course of study.
It is a pre-requisite course that you
must pass for you to graduate.
We offer Supplementary English in
three modules: Reading for Academic
Purposes, Academic Writing, and
Listening and Speaking. The English
Supplementary modules cannot be
taken altogether, but each module
must be taken one semester at a time.
Each module is four hours a week for
14 weeks, i.e. 56 hours in all.
Reading for Academic

It helps you improve your English
proficiency, with a focus on reading of
academic texts.
Writing for Academic Purposes
module
It is designed to help you improve your

Foundation and Diploma programs
are designed to be pathways for
students who have not yet
achieved the requirements for
direct entry into bachelor degree
programs.
Foundation programs
The cost-effective one-year
Foundation program develops your
competence in English, Mathematics,
Information Technology and several
other fundamental subjects.
As it is conducted entirely on campus
and staffed largely by university
academics, you will be getting a taste
of a real university learning
environment even before you have
begun your university studies.
You have four Foundation programs to
choose from. These are the Swinburne
Foundation Studies (Business),
Swinburne Foundation Studies
(Design), Swinburne Foundation
Studies (Engineering/Science) and
Swinburne Foundation Studies
(Information Technology/Multimedia).
There are three intakes for Foundation
programs. These are in January,
March and August.
Diploma programs
The Swinburne Sarawak Diploma
programs are tailored as an alternative
pathway to a bachelor degree for
students who do not meet the
requirements for entry into Foundation
programs.
The three-year program is conducted
on campus, enabling you to
experience a real university learning
environment.
Two Diploma programs are available at
Swinburne Sarawak: Diploma of
Business and Information Systems,
and Diploma of Electronic Engineering.
Students who have graduated from
these programs will be eligible for
exemptions of up to two years in the
bachelor degree program of their
choice. Exemptions vary for each
degree program.
While the Diploma programs are
designed as an alternative pathway for
entry into Swinburne Sarawak’s
undergraduate program, they are also
recognised as a qualification for career
advancement. Students who have
completed the Diploma program can
opt to start a career in the industry

Credit transfer is the granting of
recognition for previous study and/or
experience, in the form of exemption
from certain course/program

Applying for your
student visa
(For international students)
w Once the required documents and
payment have been received, they
will be forwarded to the Malaysia
Immigration Department for your
student visa application. This
process takes about four to six
weeks.
w Swinburne Sarawak will email and
courier you the Student Visa Letter
when your student visa is approved.
w You are then to proceed to the
Malaysian Embassy or consulate
indicated on the student visa
approval letter with your passport to
obtain a Single Entry Visa, and make
your travel arrangements.
w After arriving at Swinburne Sarawak,
you will be required to undergo a
medical test (no additional charge)
w Your passport and medical result
will then be submitted to the
Malaysian Immigration Department
for endorsing the Student Pass into
a Multiple Entry Student Pass. This
process takes about three to four
weeks.
Assistance with student visa
International students from some
countries who have already entered
Malaysia with a social pass but do not
yet have a student visa can seek the
assistance of the university to apply for
one. As a fee will be imposed by the
Malaysian Immigration Department in
such cases, you are advised to obtain
the appropriate visa before your
arrival.
