Swinburne Sarawak 2009 Course Guide 10 Student Council The Swinburne Sarawak Student Council helps new students adjust to university life through its orientation programs and other annual activities. These activities are a great way to make new friends and see what Sarawak has to offer. Every Swinburne Sarawak student becomes a member of the student council automatically. Student clubs Joining a club gives you the opportunity to make new friends. As close networks are made, club members become excellent sources of support and information. This is particularly true when you first arrive. Swinburne Sarawak has a wide range of clubs and our special interest clubs offer many indoor and outdoor extra-curricular activities. They have regular social activities, cultural nights and sporting events. Some of these clubs include Rotaract, Explorers, Football, Badminton, Taekwondo, DanceSport, Debaters’, Photomedia and Design, Robotics and Automation, and many more. You are sure to find a group where you’ll feel right at home. Many of these clubs were started by students. You can set up a club yourself subject to meeting the appropriate criteria. International student activities There is so much more to studying in Malaysia than just being in the classroom, which is why Swinburne Sarawak organises affordable day trips and activities for all our international students. The activities, such as the International Cultural Night, Sunset River Cruise, and Kuching City Tour, are organised by the university’s Student Operations Department. The Swinburne Sarawak Student Council, in collaboration with staff of the university, organises orientation and day trips for new students. Swinburne Sarawak 2009 Course Guide Study style 11 Teaching and assessment Modes of study At Swinburne Sarawak our lecturers are focused on optimising your learning experience. Our teaching staff will use a number of innovative delivery methods to promote your understanding of your chosen course. While you are studying with us you will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of lectures, tutorials, laboratory and studio sessions, group work, cross-discipline projects, case studies, practical sessions, discussion groups and individual research projects, depending on the course you choose. Students are encouraged to participate in culturally diverse study groups and to take responsibility for their own learning. Much of your success will depend on your commitment to developing a mature and self-directed learning style. did you know? You can apply for credit from your previous studies to shorten the duration of your course. Flexible delivery You will also be exposed to the latest in flexible-delivery options such as podcasts and video-streamed lectures, video conferences, simulations, discussion forums and online chats. You will have plenty of opportunities to meet and interact with other students to optimise your learning and build professional networks. Assessment methods Assessment takes various forms. Generally, students will be assessed through a combination of assignments, examinations, practical sessions, individual and group projects, and presentations. Student exchange program The Swinburne Sarawak student exchange program allows degree students an unmatched opportunity to enrich their tertiary learning experience in Melbourne at Malaysian cost. Selected students will complete a semester of study in Melbourne. The number of participants is subject to a quota every semester. Selection is based on the student’s academic achievement (at least a credit average) and an active involvement in cocurricular activities. Intercampus transfer Students can choose to complete their degrees either in Kuching or Melbourne. Since the courses and subjects are the same, students are able to transfer to our campus in Melbourne at the end of any semester subject to obtaining the appropriate visa from the relevant government. Learning facilities Library The library at the Sarawak campus provides learning resources and services to support the university’s teaching and research programs. The services and facilities have been specially designed to integrate modern digital technology with traditional information resources. All functions are fully automated using the Library Management Software Services, ANGKASA. You may access the Web Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) for bibliographic search and loan status information of library materials via the Internet. It is equipped with a growing range of printed, electronic and audiovisual reference materials to support the work and research by students and academic staff. Also available to students at the library are photocopying and printing services. The library recognises the importance of library and research skills and runs a number of information programs and training sessions throughout the year to assist students in utilising the databases effectively for their research. Information technology The Information Technology Services Department provides computing services and support including computer labs, online library services, dial-in access and webmail. Wireless internet access is available within selected parts of the Sarawak campus. Academic terminology Course/Program This is what we call your doctorate, degree, diploma, certificate or complete program of study. It is made up of a number of units. Unit of study (unit) An individual subject or module studied as part of a course/program. Prerequisite A unit of study or other requirement that must be completed in order to take further units at Swinburne. Credit point Each Swinburne unit of study has a credit point value. Most units are 12.5 credit points. Study load Load relates to the number of credit points studied in each teaching period. International student-visa holders are normally required to take a full-time study load. For most courses at Swinburne, a full-time study load is 50 credit points in each semester.
