Student assistance<br />

The Student Operations Department<br />

and the Business Development and<br />

Communications Department assist<br />

students in several areas. The latter<br />

will be your first point <strong>of</strong> contact<br />

when you arrive. With the assistance<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Student Operations<br />

Department, it will provide you with<br />

ongoing support throughout your<br />

time here. Some <strong>of</strong> the areas we will<br />

assist you with are your application,<br />

accommodation, visas, health<br />

insurance, opening <strong>of</strong> bank account,<br />

course information and referrals to<br />

other services both on and <strong>of</strong>f<br />

campus, as well as intercampus<br />

transfer.<br />

Arrival pickup<br />

New students arriving at the Kuching<br />

International Airport and other points<br />

<strong>of</strong> entry can request to be picked up.<br />

the Arrival Service Booking Form<br />

which is enclosed with the <strong>of</strong>ficial<br />

<strong>of</strong>fer letter from <strong>Swinburne</strong> Sarawak<br />

and send it to the Business<br />

Development and Communications<br />

Department. It must reach the<br />

university five days prior to your<br />

arrival in Kuching.<br />

Student counselors<br />

Student counselors are available for<br />

confidential counseling on academic<br />

and non-academic matters. Students<br />

can seek assistance for a range <strong>of</strong><br />

reasons including adjusting to life<br />

and study, study skills, cross-cultural<br />

issues, loneliness and issues related<br />

to relationships with family and<br />

friends, anxiety, depression and<br />

stress management. The counselors<br />

work together with the various<br />

schools <strong>of</strong> the university to provide<br />

sound information specific to student<br />

needs.<br />

Scholarship and financial<br />

assistance<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong> Sarawak awards students<br />

who excel academically and those<br />

who display good leadership skills,<br />

with scholarships each semester. The<br />

university also assists eligible<br />

students who perform well in their<br />

studies to apply for financial<br />

assistance.<br />

ANNUAL EVENTS YOU CAN LOOK<br />

FORWARD TO<br />

Here are some <strong>of</strong> the annual activities that are held in Kuching and<br />

other parts <strong>of</strong> Sarawak which you can look forward to:<br />

w Rainforest World Music Festival: This festival brings together renowned<br />

world musicians from all continents as well as indigenous musicians from<br />

Borneo. Held in July in Kuching, fans come from around the world to enjoy<br />

the concerts and workshops.<br />

w Kuching Festival: Look forward to city parades, stage shows, food fairs,<br />

concerts and competitions to mark the anniversary <strong>of</strong> Kuching as a city, in<br />

August.<br />

w Sematan Festival: This event takes place in August and features beach<br />

games and exposition <strong>of</strong> local products in the seaside town <strong>of</strong> Sematan and<br />

its beach area, about two hours’ drive from Kuching.<br />

w International Borneo Kite Flying Festival: See swirling performances from<br />

Malaysian and international kite flyers displaying their skills. Watch the sky<br />

for a multitude <strong>of</strong> kites in various colours, shapes and sizes. This event<br />

normally takes place in August and the venue changes each year.<br />

w Tidal Bore Festival: Held in the sleepy town <strong>of</strong> Sri Aman, 194km from<br />

Kuching. Immerse yourself in water sports, local culture, food fair, good<br />

music and dance performances that are part and parcel <strong>of</strong> the festival.<br />

w Sarawak Regatta: This adrenaline-rushing annual event, held around August<br />

and September, sees competitors outpacing themselves in paddleboat,<br />

powerboat and canoe competitions along the Sarawak River. The Kuching<br />

Waterfront is a great place to witness the event.<br />

w Open Houses: Major Malaysian festivals such as Hari Raya Aidil-Fitri,<br />

Chinese New Year, Gawai Dayak and Christmas see celebrants welcoming<br />

friends and families into their homes and serving them specially prepared<br />

dishes.<br />
