help you make the transition to
life and study in Kuching.
Student assistance
The Student Operations Department
and the Business Development and
Communications Department assist
students in several areas. The latter
will be your first point of contact
when you arrive. With the assistance
of the Student Operations
Department, it will provide you with
ongoing support throughout your
time here. Some of the areas we will
assist you with are your application,
accommodation, visas, health
insurance, opening of bank account,
course information and referrals to
other services both on and off
campus, as well as intercampus
transfer.
Arrival pickup
New students arriving at the Kuching
International Airport and other points
of entry can request to be picked up.
To enjoy this free service, complete
the Arrival Service Booking Form
which is enclosed with the official
offer letter from Swinburne Sarawak
and send it to the Business
Development and Communications
Department. It must reach the
university five days prior to your
arrival in Kuching.
Student counselors
Student counselors are available for
confidential counseling on academic
and non-academic matters. Students
can seek assistance for a range of
reasons including adjusting to life
and study, study skills, cross-cultural
issues, loneliness and issues related
to relationships with family and
friends, anxiety, depression and
stress management. The counselors
work together with the various
schools of the university to provide
sound information specific to student
needs.
Scholarship and financial
assistance
Swinburne Sarawak awards students
who excel academically and those
who display good leadership skills,
with scholarships each semester. The
university also assists eligible
students who perform well in their
studies to apply for financial
assistance.
ANNUAL EVENTS YOU CAN LOOK
FORWARD TO
Here are some of the annual activities that are held in Kuching and
other parts of Sarawak which you can look forward to:
w Rainforest World Music Festival: This festival brings together renowned
world musicians from all continents as well as indigenous musicians from
Borneo. Held in July in Kuching, fans come from around the world to enjoy
the concerts and workshops.
w Kuching Festival: Look forward to city parades, stage shows, food fairs,
concerts and competitions to mark the anniversary of Kuching as a city, in
August.
w Sematan Festival: This event takes place in August and features beach
games and exposition of local products in the seaside town of Sematan and
its beach area, about two hours’ drive from Kuching.
w International Borneo Kite Flying Festival: See swirling performances from
Malaysian and international kite flyers displaying their skills. Watch the sky
for a multitude of kites in various colours, shapes and sizes. This event
normally takes place in August and the venue changes each year.
w Tidal Bore Festival: Held in the sleepy town of Sri Aman, 194km from
Kuching. Immerse yourself in water sports, local culture, food fair, good
music and dance performances that are part and parcel of the festival.
w Sarawak Regatta: This adrenaline-rushing annual event, held around August
and September, sees competitors outpacing themselves in paddleboat,
powerboat and canoe competitions along the Sarawak River. The Kuching
Waterfront is a great place to witness the event.
w Open Houses: Major Malaysian festivals such as Hari Raya Aidil-Fitri,
Chinese New Year, Gawai Dayak and Christmas see celebrants welcoming
friends and families into their homes and serving them specially prepared
dishes.
