Studying English at
Swinburne Sarawak
To help you improve your English
language proficiency, Swinburne
Sarawak offers you a range of
English courses.
The university determines whether you
need an English course on the basis of
the English Placement Test and/or
assessment of the School of Language
and Foundation.
Courses
The objective of Swinburne Sarawak’s
English courses is to provide you with
English support that you need to
enable you to cope better with your
program studies.
We have two types of English
language courses: intensive and
supplementary. The Swinburne
Sarawak English Placement Test
determines which English course you
should be on. The Intensive course
runs in the months before your
diploma, foundation or degree
program, whereas the Supplementary
English courses run during your main
program.
Course Description
Intensive English Course
The Intensive English course is one
you might need to take before entering
university. It is a pre-requisite course
for students who do not meet the
university’s entrance requirements for
English.
This course is divided into Level 1 and
Level 2, and is designed to give you
maximum interactive learning practice
in listening, speaking, reading, writing,
vocabulary and grammar. Each level
runs for 10 weeks and comprises 250
hours of learning in the classroom,
language lab and library. It covers
General English and English for
Academic Purposes. Students have to
pass the exams at Level 1 and Level 2.
Level 1 incorporates 2 hours per week
of IELTS training for students who wish
to take the IELTS test.
Supplementary English Course
for Foundation Students
– English Proficiency
The English Proficiency is a prerequisite
course that you must pass to
complete your Foundation program
successfully. On passing the English
Proficiency, you may still be required to
study Supplementary English in your
diploma or degree program.
The course is five hours per week for
14 weeks, totaling 70 class hours. The
course teaches General English and it
focuses on sentence level grammar
and short pieces of writing.
Supplementary English Course
for Diploma and Degree
Students
The Supplementary English Course is
for you if you do not meet the
university’s English requirements for
your course of study.
It is a pre-requisite course that you
must pass for you to graduate.
We offer Supplementary English in
three modules: Reading for Academic
Purposes, Academic Writing, and
Listening and Speaking. The English
Supplementary modules cannot be
taken altogether, but each module
must be taken one semester at a time.
Each module is four hours a week for
14 weeks, i.e. 56 hours in all.
Reading for Academic
Purposes module
It helps you improve your English
proficiency, with a focus on reading of
academic texts.
Writing for Academic Purposes
module
It is designed to help you improve your
English proficiency to enable you to
write assignments for your diploma or
degree in clear and correct English.
Listening and Speaking
module
This is an aural-oral course that
improves your oral and aural English
proficiency. It develops your ability to
listen and speak in English, take
lecture notes, make short oral
presentations and take part confidently
in discussions.
