Studying English at<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong> Sarawak<br />

To help you improve your English<br />

language pr<strong>of</strong>iciency, <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />

Sarawak <strong>of</strong>fers you a range <strong>of</strong><br />

English courses.<br />

The university determines whether you<br />

need an English course on the basis <strong>of</strong><br />

the English Placement Test and/or<br />

assessment <strong>of</strong> the School <strong>of</strong> Language<br />

and Foundation.<br />

Courses<br />

The objective <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong> Sarawak’s<br />

English courses is to provide you with<br />

English support that you need to<br />

enable you to cope better with your<br />

program studies.<br />

We have two types <strong>of</strong> English<br />

language courses: intensive and<br />

supplementary. The <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />

Sarawak English Placement Test<br />

determines which English course you<br />

should be on. The Intensive course<br />

runs in the months before your<br />

diploma, foundation or degree<br />

program, whereas the Supplementary<br />

English courses run during your main<br />

program.<br />

Course Description<br />

Intensive English Course<br />

The Intensive English course is one<br />

you might need to take before entering<br />

university. It is a pre-requisite course<br />

for students who do not meet the<br />

university’s entrance requirements for<br />

English.<br />

This course is divided into Level 1 and<br />

Level 2, and is designed to give you<br />

maximum interactive learning practice<br />

in listening, speaking, reading, writing,<br />

vocabulary and grammar. Each level<br />

runs for 10 weeks and comprises 250<br />

hours <strong>of</strong> learning in the classroom,<br />

language lab and library. It covers<br />

General English and English for<br />

Academic Purposes. Students have to<br />

pass the exams at Level 1 and Level 2.<br />

Level 1 incorporates 2 hours per week<br />

<strong>of</strong> IELTS training for students who wish<br />

to take the IELTS test.<br />

Supplementary English Course<br />

for Foundation Students<br />

– English Pr<strong>of</strong>iciency<br />

The English Pr<strong>of</strong>iciency is a prerequisite<br />

course that you must pass to<br />

complete your Foundation program<br />

successfully. On passing the English<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>iciency, you may still be required to<br />

study Supplementary English in your<br />

diploma or degree program.<br />

The course is five hours per week for<br />

14 weeks, totaling 70 class hours. The<br />

course teaches General English and it<br />

focuses on sentence level grammar<br />

and short pieces <strong>of</strong> writing.<br />

Supplementary English Course<br />

for Diploma and Degree<br />

Students<br />

The Supplementary English Course is<br />

for you if you do not meet the<br />

university’s English requirements for<br />

your course <strong>of</strong> study.<br />

It is a pre-requisite course that you<br />

must pass for you to graduate.<br />

We <strong>of</strong>fer Supplementary English in<br />

three modules: Reading for Academic<br />

Purposes, Academic Writing, and<br />

Listening and Speaking. The English<br />

Supplementary modules cannot be<br />

taken altogether, but each module<br />

must be taken one semester at a time.<br />

Each module is four hours a week for<br />

14 weeks, i.e. 56 hours in all.<br />

Reading for Academic<br />

Purposes module<br />

It helps you improve your English<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>iciency, with a focus on reading <strong>of</strong><br />

academic texts.<br />

Writing for Academic Purposes<br />

module<br />

It is designed to help you improve your<br />

English pr<strong>of</strong>iciency to enable you to<br />

write assignments for your diploma or<br />

degree in clear and correct English.<br />

Listening and Speaking<br />

module<br />

This is an aural-oral course that<br />

improves your oral and aural English<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>iciency. It develops your ability to<br />

listen and speak in English, take<br />

lecture notes, make short oral<br />

presentations and take part confidently<br />

in discussions.<br />
