Swinburne Sarawak 2009 Course Guide 0 Kuching Swinburne’s Sarawak Campus is in Kuching, the capital city of the East Malaysian state of Sarawak. Kuching has been described as one of the most liveable and attractive cities in Southeast Asia. Rich in history with old-world charms blended into 21 st century modernity, it is the largest city in the state and rapidly developing. Character and culture Meaning “cat” in the Malay language, Kuching was originally a busy riverine trading post in the old days. Today, it is a delightful blend of the old and new, where a mix of colonial era and modern buildings makes up the city’s skyline. With a population of more than half a million, the city enjoys a clean, relaxed and friendly environment. There are many places to visit and experience. Among them is the award-winning Kuching Waterfront, a beautifully landscaped esplanade on a stretch of the old part of the city overlooking the Astana, the official residence of the governor of Sarawak. The Waterfront is a popular gathering place especially as the sun sets beyond the scenic Mount Serapi. Cafes and souvenir shops, dating back to 1864, selling a variety of ethnic handicraft, antiques, art and craft line the Main Bazaar near the esplanade. The Sarawak Museum, built in 1891 in the style of a Normandy town hall, is another interesting stop. It is regarded as one of the best in the region. Other places of interest include the Chinese History Museum, Islamic Museum, Cat Museum, Courthouse and Brooke Memorial and the Round Tower. Once in Kuching, you will soon discover that eating out is a favourite pastime among the local folk. Around the city an array of restaurants, food courts and open-air eateries offer a wide variety of traditional food ranging from Chinese, Indian, Malay and Thai to contemporary Japanese and Western. Shopping malls and complexes carry the latest fashions and a plethora of international labels. The city offers a variety of entertainment and night life. Only minutes away from the city are magnificent mountains, unspoiled beaches and even an award winning “living” museum, the Sarawak Cultural Village. You will find that the resorts and golf courses are of international standards. International events Kuching is no stranger to hosting international events among which is the annual Rainforest World Music Festival, a unique gathering of musicians from all continents and Borneo who perform on stage. Kuching is also the venue for the annual ITF World Junior Tennis Championship and Sarawak Junior World Masters Golf Championship. With its lower cost of living and peaceful environment combined with its good infrastructure, Kuching is an ideal destination to pursue tertiary education for both Malaysian and international students. Explore Sarawak With its rainforest the size of Austria, Sarawak houses the world’s richest and most diverse ecosystem, making it a popular destination for eco-tourism. Its numerous national parks are known for their many natural wonders. It is home to many international heritage sites such as Mulu Caves, Niah Caves, Bako and Gunung Gading national parks. Sarawak, the largest state in the country with a population of only 2.3 million, is also the most culturally diverse state in the country. Its 29 indigenous communities are well known for their friendliness and hospitality, and nowhere else in Malaysia can such colourful diversity be found. Internally, Sarawak is well-connected by a network of air, road and river transportation making travel convenient and affordable. Being a student at Swinburne Sarawak is not just about coming away with a piece of paper and a list of results. It’s about getting real experience through our practical courses. Teaching and learning quality Swinburne Sarawak’s learning environment and teaching style foster excellence at all levels as the curriculum of our courses is adapted from our home campus in Melbourne. The learning and teaching styles are therefore undifferentiated. Quality assurance mechanisms are in place to ensure that the high standards of the university are maintained. Swinburne Australia’s ratings in the Good Universities Guide 2008 placed it as the best university in Melbourne for Teaching Quality, Generic Skills and Graduate Satisfaction, and one of the top three for Research Intensivity. The Department of Education, Science and Training placed Swinburne Australia’s IT, science, engineering, business and arts courses in the top tier of the Learning and Teaching Performance Fund 2008. Swinburne Australia has also been placed in the top 10 universities in Australia for teaching and learning excellence by The Australian newspaper. This is the third year that Swinburne has been ranked with the Group of Eight universities in learning and teaching performance rankings. International connections At Swinburne Sarawak we ensure that our graduates are well-prepared for the international workplace. Its Study Abroad and AsiaLearn programs allow university students from Australia, Europe and the United States to spend a number of semesters at Swinburne Sarawak. Swinburne is the only Australian university invited to be a member of the European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU). Key goals of ECIU include fostering student and staff mobility, and sharing innovative programs that give students a competitive edge in today’s global employment market. Practical courses The courses at Swinburne Sarawak are identical to those offered by its home campus in Melbourne and are designed to prepare you for the workplace. They tackle real-world issues and provide hands-on learning. Most courses involve applied learning: classes in the studio or laboratory, case studies, excursions, teamwork, research projects, and project-based assignments assessed by industry practitioners. These are just a few examples of the different ways we teach our students practical skills. The curriculum of the courses are developed and regularly reviewed in consultation with industry. This ensures that in Australia alone, more than 30 professional and accrediting bodies recognise Swinburne courses. Swinburne Sarawak collaborates with an integrated circuit design house and a silicon foundry to develop semiconductor-related subject content to better suit industry needs. A number of its courses are accredited by the relevant professional bodies such as Engineers Australia, Board of Engineers Malaysia, CPA Australia, ACCA and vetted by the Australian Computer Society. This ensures that the courses meet the highest standards of the respective professions and industries. Engineering students are required to undergo the compulsory Professional Experience in Engineering, a cumulative equivalent of a 12-week, full time industry experience. The option to complete six to 12 months of Industry-Based Learning, where they train within industry, is also open to Engineering students. Research excellence Research underpins and invigorates all Swinburne activities. Swinburne Australia was placed in the top three universities in Melbourne for Research Intensivity in the Good Universities Guide 2008. In 2007, Swinburne’s research income continued to grow strongly, exceeding the results of previous years. Swinburne was awarded A$4.2 million in Australian Research Council (ARC) funding under the ARC’s 2008 Discovery Projects Grants. Swinburne also achieved excellent outcomes in other ARC funding schemes for 2008. From its initial purpose of conducting tests of integrated circuits, the IP Test Laboratory at Swinburne Sarawak has expanded its activities to include research and development into Microelectromechanical System (MEMS) reliability and mechatronics devices. Some of these projects are funded by the Malaysian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, and Ministry of Finance.
