DESTINATION
Washington D.C. is the only American city which does not belong to a federal state. The suffix «D.C.» stands for
District of Columbia and denotes a – special – administrative district. The names Washington D.C., District of
Columbia or just simply D.C. thus always denote the capital of the USA which does not actually lie in any federal
state. Since 1800, Washington, near where the Potomac River flows into the Atlantic Chesapeake Bay, has been
the seat of government of the USA. The city is named after the first American President and is the first American
city to have been planned.
guard takes place on a regular basis in front of The Tomb of
the Unknowns, also referred to as the Tomb of the
Unknown Soldier.
Chesapeake Bay
The largest watershed of the North American continent is
just outside the American capital: Chesapeake Bay.Thousands
of streams and rivers are tributaries to this inlet, which
stretches 300 km along the east coast. At its broadest, the
bay is over 56 km wide. It is quite simply a magnificent living
space. The Indians used the bay as a source of food. Since
the White Man started to settle the banks, this natural paradise
has been more and more exploited: cannons were actually
used in the fight for Chesapeake oysters.
