By looking at the results of the PERISCOPE trial and the APPROACH trial together, and evaluating the relative benefits of thiazolidinediones against sulfonylureas with regard to progression of atherosclerosis, a virtual “head-to-head” comparison of these two agents was made. The resulting data were interesting in view of the debate over the past year of whether rosiglitazone and pioglitazone have different properties that might either increase or reduce the risk of cardiovascular events.
