If the metastatic phenotype arises early then most
tumors will have already metastasized by the time of
detection
Consensus: most tumors do metastasize early
and give rise to micrometastases that are too
small to detect.
Aggressive therapy given soon after detection
of primary may therefore reduce the incidence
of metastatic disease.
