“Technology Generation and<br />

Production of Cereals and Cool-<br />

Season Legumes,” the following<br />

events were organized:<br />

• A regional specialized training<br />

course on “Integrated Pest<br />

Management” in Aleppo, Syria,<br />

in May. Twelve scientists,<br />

researchers and extensionists<br />

from Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia,<br />

Sudan, and Yemen participated<br />

in the course<br />

• A regional wheat and food<br />

legumes traveling workshop in<br />

Egypt in March. More than 100<br />

scientists from ARC, 40 extensionists<br />

from the Ministry of<br />

Agriculture and more than 200<br />

farmers participated.<br />

• A regional traveling workshop<br />

in Ethiopia in September.<br />

Participants came from Egypt,<br />

Ethiopia, Sudan, and Yemen<br />

and included farmers, extensionists<br />

and researchers.<br />

• A national traveling workshop<br />

on food legumes and wheat in<br />

Sudan in January, organized by<br />

ARC-Sudan, and <strong>ICARDA</strong>.<br />

Participants included more than<br />

60 scientists from ARC, professors<br />

and students from faculties<br />

of agriculture from Nahr El-Nile<br />

and northern states, extensionists<br />

from the Ministry of<br />

Agriculture as well as more than<br />

100 farmers from different locations.<br />

Also, the NVRSRP and the<br />

<strong>ICARDA</strong> Seed Unit organized a<br />

regional training workshop on<br />

“Informal Quality Seed<br />

Production” at Wad Medani,<br />

Sudan, in December. The activity<br />

was implemented within the framework<br />

of the “Canada for Africa<br />

Grant,” targeting sub-Saharan<br />

African countries. Participants<br />

came from Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sudan,<br />

and Yemen. Specialists from<br />

<strong>ICARDA</strong> and Sudanese institutions<br />

acted as facilitators.<br />

Interregional cooperation<br />

H.E. Dr Mohamed Emadi, Deputy<br />

Minister of Agriculture, Extension<br />

and Farming Systems, Iran, visited<br />

Egypt in March to discuss bilateral<br />

collaboration between the two<br />

countries in agricultural research<br />

and development. He visited ARC<br />

and CLAES. He also participated in<br />

a regional traveling workshop<br />

organized in Egypt by the<br />

<strong>ICARDA</strong>/IFAD-funded project on<br />

“Technology Generation and<br />

Dissemination for Sustainable<br />

Production of Cereals and Cool-<br />

Season Food Legumes.” During a<br />

farmer field school session, Dr<br />

Emadi had extensive discussions<br />

with farmers, researchers, and<br />

International Cooperation<br />

H.E. Dr Mohamed Emadi (second from<br />

Extension and Farming Systems, Iran,<br />

participated in a traveling workshop in<br />

Fayoum, Egypt on 21-23 March.<br />

extensionists on improved technologies<br />

and IPM.<br />

In March, a delegation from the<br />

Barani Project in Pakistan, comprising<br />

the Director of Barani<br />

Agricultural Research Institute and<br />

a senior pathologist from the<br />

Fodder Research Institute in<br />

Pakistan, visited ARC, Egypt, to get<br />

acquainted with seed production<br />

systems of forage crops, particularly<br />

Egyptian clover. They also visited<br />

Sakha and Seru Research<br />

Stations, the modern private farms<br />

in the newly reclaimed lands, the<br />

Matrouh Resource Management<br />

Project (MRMP), and Ain Shams<br />

University.<br />

A delegation from Kyrgyzstan<br />

consisting of H.E. Mr Aleksander<br />

Kostyuk, Minister of Agriculture,<br />

Mr Samagan Mamatov, Chairman<br />

of Agrarian Committee of Kyrgyz<br />

Parliament, and Mr Kambaralt<br />

Kasymov, Member of Kyrgyz<br />

Parliament, visited Egypt in June.<br />

The delegation visited the<br />

Agricultural Genetic Engineering<br />

Research Institute (AGERI) and a<br />

modern farm in the newly<br />

reclaimed areas of Nubaria region<br />

to see modern agricultural production<br />

systems.<br />
